Author Spotlight Erin Lee

Welcome to the Limitless Library Lounge where I interview fellow authors from Limitless Publishing. Today, I am chatting with Erin Lee from Keene, New Hampshire

I understand you have a novel that is just being released by Limitless today. Can you give me some details about it?

My stand alone, “Nine Lives” is coming out with Limitless today, Feb. 2, 2016. It’s about three sisters who were raised in a very strict home. To escape, they come up with a plan that lands their father in jail for a crime he didn’t commit. Unable to anticipate how one like would shatter their family, the family must come together or fall apart entirely to come to grasp with what’s happened. This one is difficult for me, because I’m normally “on the side” of the child every time. But I also have come to learn that parents are often victims too and needed to make sure that message was out there too.

Sounds sooo good. Can you tell us a little bit more about your other books?

I published “Wave to Papa” on my 41^st birthday on Sept. 8, 2015 with Limitless. I also published “Crazy Like Me” in 2015 with Savant Books and Publications.

I work as a therapist by day. Most of my writing has to do with psychology and/or the social services and court systems and how they work for children who are victims of abuse. My genre is contemporary fiction.

I’m currently writing a series called “Lola, Party of Eight” about a woman who suffers from dissociative identity disorder, once called multiple personality disorder. The first book in that series, “Alters,” is due out March 29, 2016.

You’re a busy lady. Would you describe your goals as a writer to us. What do you hope to achieve in the next few years? What are you planning to do to reach these goals?

I want to use my writing talents as a way to send messages about mental illness, abuse, and the social services and court systems for people who don’t have a voice. This real world experience has taught me that courts don’t work the way we see them on TV. I want to give a voice to the voiceless and answer some questions about why things happen the way they do within a very broken system. I think this is an important message and one that’s often overlooked because of Crazy stigma.

I will continue to write about abuse and mental illness as long as my fingers and mind will allow me to. I want my books to not only entertain, but provide good information to those who may find themselves in situations that are really tough, emotionally. If I can help one person know they aren’t alone, I’ve done my job.

You sure have. That sounds like an excellent and certainly worthy goal.

What type of reader are you hoping to attract? Who do you believe would be most interested in reading your books?

I think anyone who has worked in the social services system, child advocacy courts, etc would be interested in my work. I also think the types of people who watch the news and ask “how could that happen to a child?” and “why didn’t anyone do anything to protect that child?” would also find my books very informative and interesting.

Absolutely.

What advice would you give other authors or those still trying to get published?

Don’t give up. Don’t write to be published. Write to give voice to things, messages, and ideas you care about. Write to bring characters to life. Write as therapy.

I agree completely.

What hobbies and interests do you have besides writing?

As the mother to two teenage sons, I spend a lot of time at sporting events. I often have a notebook with me as I people watch and jot down ideas. I am overly obsessed with my rescue dog, a mutt named Milo, who patiently lays in my lap through every key stroke and wags his tale furiously when I finally shut the laptop for the night. As silly as it sounds, he is my best friend and muse.

Pets can certainly be good friends. That’s great that you took in a rescue.

What do you like most and least about being an author? What is your toughest challenge?

In many ways, I use my writing as my own form of therapy. It helps me process some of the evil, abusive, and sad things I see every day in my work. At the same time, I believe my writing gives me a platform to begin making change and that gives me hope.

My toughest challenge, currently, is that I have stories I’d like to write but can’t because they involve real life people and/or my own family members. I’m debating coming up with a new pen name to protect them all, but I do believe these stories need to be told as well. I struggle with how to not put “me” into my books and keep them purely fiction. And, how to not get preachy about a system, I believe, cares more about giving those accused rights and less about the rights of helpless children.

Writing definitely can be therapeutic, and I can see the challenge you have. It must be tough because as much as you need to get close to a story, getting too close can certainly be an issue. In my mystery, A STONE’S THROW, my main character is a librarian like I am but, luckily, that type of job isn’t one that deals with the same type of issues as yours. Although, I must say, we do get some mentally challenged patrons.

Author Spotlight Taylor Brooke

Welcome to the Limitless Library Lounge where I interview fellow authors from Limitless Publishing. Today, I am chatting with Taylor Brooke from Bend, Oregon.

I understand you have a novel that is just being released by Limitless today. Can you give me some details about it?

I signed my contract with Limitless for the Isolation Series, an urban scifi trilogy, in early October of 2015. The first book in the trilogy, Omen Operation, is my first published title. It is being released today, January 26, 2016.

How exciting. Can you tell us a little bit more about your books?

Right now I’m focused on my science fiction trilogy and I’m currently writing the sequel to Omen Operation. I like to dabble in a bit of everything and other than ECHO Campaign, the second installment in The Isolation Series, I’m also fleshing out a contemporary fantasy novel that I plan to have ready for publication in 2017.

Would you describe your goals as a writer to us. What do you hope to achieve in the next few years? What are you planning to do to reach these goals?

Being 24 years old and having your first book published is a big deal. I keep telling myself that it’s okay to take a break and catch my breath, but at the same time I find myself falling over my own ideas. I’m constantly day dreaming about my next project, my next mile-marker, and I’m always looking for ways to better my writing. The next goal I have is to complete ECHO Campaign, hopefully achieve a USA Today Bestseller title and then continue working toward a contract with Harper Collins or Penguin. I’m looking forward to my 2016 reading goal — 100 books in a year — and I’m also taking my time and learning the ropes when it comes to communication between author and author, as well as author and fan. I’m driven to put out the best books I possibly can and I hope that drive is what continues to grow my success.

Sounds like you are very goal-oriented. That’s great.

What type of reader are you hoping to attract? Who do you believe would be most interested in reading your books?

I don’t want to settle into a genre just yet. I’m writing Urban Scifi, but my purpose in writing The Isolation Series was to give people characters they could relate to. I wanted young women to see other young women fighting for their freedom, and not losing a sense of themselves as they did so. I want young men to see my young male characters and learn something from them, resonate with them, and feel for them. I wanted to raise the bar for myself and for other writers my age, to be inclusive, self-aware, and practical in their writing. Heternormativity is something I’ve extinguished in my writing and something that I’ll stray from for as long as I’m a writer. Cultural diversity and representation in all categories is important and I’m not going to back away from it. I’d say my type of reader is the adventurous type, someone who wants to see their passions and causes reflected in the characters they read about.

Nice. I’m having some issues right now with trying to pin myself down to the “right” genre, but maybe you have a better idea that the genre is not as important as the characterizations and what you want readers to get from your writing.

Do you have any advice to other authors or those still trying to get published?

Don’t give up. Keep writing. Stay focused. Learn from your mistakes. Find a supportive but critical writing group who you trust to point our your weaknesses and help you build them into strengths. It takes time, it’s a pain in the ass, and sometimes it’s heart breaking, but being a published author is my dream come true. I wouldn’t be where I am today if I would’ve given up, and the only reason I didn’t is because of my huge support system — my family, my brother, and my beta readers. Two days before I heard back from Limitless I was down on myself, ready to scrap Omen Operation and start on a new concept all together. I’d received an abundance of rejections, so many that I kept a folder of them in my e-mail to look back on if I ever made it. But I didn’t give up, and after those two days I signed a contract for a trilogy, and a month later I was offered another contract (which I politely declined since I’d already found representation) and now I look back on that folder titled ‘rejections’ and I smile.

Very good points, Taylor. I just gave a publishing talk at my library, and the number one tip I gave the group was to be persistent and keep writing. I am also starting a writer’s club at the library in response to patron requests. You are also absolutely right about support from family and fellow authors, and I’ve found suggestions from beta readers extremely important, as well.

What do you like to do in your spare time besides writing?

I’m a traveler. My brother and I take off at least once a year to another country and immerse ourselves in unfamiliar culture for a few weeks. In 2015 we were in Thailand, climbing mountainside trails to ancient temples and eating an unhealthy amount of Pad Thai. In 2016 we’re going to Star Wars convention in London, and hopefully we’ll be adventuring in Peru in 2017 on a wildlife campaign. Besides being a budget backpacker, I’m a fantasy and scifi enthusiast. I frequent yearly comic conventions, collect books, trinkets, and nonsense, and devote my time to learning about other artists and authors.

Wow! Sounds amazing, and a great way to get book ideas.

What do you like most and least about being an author? What is your toughest challenge?

I think my toughest challenge is not being too hard on myself. I’m constantly texting my brother asking him for advice (he’s my beta reader and first draft editor) but usually I’m searching for guidance and strength instead of quick fixes. He’s the first person to tell me to chill out, and the last to tell me to give up. I can’t really pin-point what I like most about being an author. It’s been my dream since I was a little girl. I remember a year or two ago driving in my car, the music was on, I was day dreaming about receiving an offer on one of my books, and I was crying. It seemed so distant back then, something I’d never really reach, but here I am. A published author. I guess that’s the best part, being able to say “I did it” and knowing that I made my own dreams come true.

I think writing is a dream that most authors have from childhood. I know it was one of mine. Achieving a dream, like we have, is an awesome feeling but, like anything worth achieving, it takes hard work, effort, and a lot of time to accomplish.

I signed my contract with Limitless in October of 2015 and will have my first release on January 26, 2016. It is the first book in my Wilde Sisters series, SWEET ON YOU. My other contemporary romance series, The McKay-Tucker Men, was published through Liquid Silver books in the winter-spring of 2015. I write contemporary romances set in small New England towns. So far all of my books are part of a series, however each book is a stand alone.

Congratulations on your new release. Would you describe your goals as a writer to us. What do you hope to achieve in the next few years? What are you planning to do to reach these goals?

I’ve been writing off and on for the past nine years, since my son was a newborn and my daughters were two and four. I never had plans to publish. While I always thought it would be a nice perk, it was never my goal. I write as an outlet, an escape. The publishing part is the icing on the cake. To keep myself from getting too overwhelmed, I make my writing goals quite simple. I’ve been writing one book a year and have a large backlist, and when I signed with LSB in 2014 I got motivated to write faster. I wrote three books in 2015 but know I can’t keep up that pace (and my sanity) so writing one book a year is my goal. If I write more it’s just an added bonus. Because I’m OCD about goals deadlines, I don’t make them if I know I will have to sacrifice my family time because I have an obsession with meeting goals.

I understand those issues. My daughter is 11, but I also find it hard to make the time to write, work full-time at the library, and spend time with my family. I get up early and write or edit for an hour each morning before my husband and daughter get up and I have to get ready for work. I hope to publish a book a year, as well. I just finished the sequel to A STONE’S THROW that was published in November and am currently editing it before I submit it. With luck, the second book should be out this summer. I wish I had a backlist. I wrote many novels years ago, but they aren’t on computer, so it would be a lot of work to revive them. Although the Cobble Cove books can be considered standalones, it helps to read them in order. I had started a different book before A STONE’S THROW and hope to finish that one eventually.

What type of reader are you hoping to attract? Who do you believe would be most interested in reading your books?

Every single one of my books deals with a real-life issue. Something the everyday person experiences. I’ve covered issues of rape, unplanned pregnancy, type 1 diabetes, alcoholism, death, neglect, adoption etc. While these sound like heavy subjects, my books are light, carefree, and at times, funny. I don’t make light of these situations but try to show how, even when the chips are down, happily ever after can still happen.

Great topics that have wide appeal. Your approach sounds quite interesting.

What advice would you give other authors or those still trying to get published?

Don’t stop writing. When you’ve finished your first book, step away from it and start the next. Take some time before going back to edit and revise. Keep writing and learning. Join author groups, whether they be online or in your area.

That’s great advice. I stopped writing after my self-published novel, CLOUDY RAINBOW. I’m very sorry i did that, but I’m making every effort to keep writing now. I’m also starting a writer’s group at my library that I feel will be helpful to myself as well as others. It’s great to have feedback from other authors in person as well as online, as you mentioned.

What hobbies and interests do you have besides writing?

I bake and decorate cakes on the side, but with my 9 year old son’s recent diagnosis of celiac disease (this will make its way into a future book for sure), I may need to stop. Or only do gluten free cakes since we can’t have flour near our son, not even in the air. I love to bake and experiment with healthy alternatives so you’ll often find me in the kitchen concocting something yummy—and usually chocolate based. On the flip side of this, I love finding creative workouts. I’m a huge fan of the mud runs and obstacle races and have completed the mother of all obstacle races, the twelve-mile Tough Mudder, designed by British Special Forces, twice. I’ve worked this into a book as well.

Two of my children have type 1 diabetes (which does NOT run in our families) so I spend a lot of time researching and being active in various diabetes groups.

On a happier note, my children are very active in sports and I’m that loud mom in the stands who cheers and yells out positive reinforcement. We’re currently in basketball season; the Little Guy is on a team, Sports Girl is on two teams; Teenage Princess is a cheerleader. In the spring it will be baseball, lacrosse and tumbling and in the fall it’s soccer, field hockey and football cheering. My interests are guided by my kiddos.

Sorry to hear about your son’s recently diagnosed illness and your diabetic children. I had a cat who was diabetic, and I had to give him insulin shots daily for seven years. It was difficult and costly. I don’t know if your children need shots, but I’m sure it’s a challenge dealing with their issues. I’ve always found researching subjects close to me help me make my fictional books more realistic, and I’m sure your treatment of these subjects may be useful to others facing similar situations.

As far as sports, my family is not very athletic. I’ve started an exercise walking routine and video tapes indoors when the weather doesn’t permit exercising outdoors. I find it really helps me destress, concentrate more on my writing, and also helps with my dieting and weight loss (60 pounds off since last year).

In addition to your baking, I know you run a Facebook page devoted to baking and books called Read, Eat, Drink where members share recipes and reading recommendations. It’s a great idea.

What do you like most and least about being an author? What is your toughest challenge?

I love everything about being an author: crafting ideas, writing stories, reading for research, connecting with readers and other authors, doing workshops, author signings, marketing…I love it all. There isn’t anything I don’t like but my toughest challenge is definitely balancing between the day job, my children and my writing. And then balancing marketing, writing and editing.

I feel the same. Finding time to do it all is difficult. Before you publish, you don’t realize all the work involved. It’s not just writing.

I understand you have a novel that is just being released by Limitless today. Can you give me some details about it?

I signed with LP in October, My debut novel, Harley will be released Jan 19, 2016. Most of my other (early drafts) works can be read for free on Wattpad.

How exciting. Can you tell us a little bit more about your books?

So far, I only write Romance, Contemporary Romance to be specific. I have written three series: Bliss Series, West Coast Rock Stars, and Red Ink Series. At any given time, I am working at a number of WiP. It’s how I stay sane. My debut novel, Harley (Book One of West Coast Rock Stars), is being released by Limitless Publishing today, Jan 19, 2016.

Would you describe your goals as a writer to us. What do you hope to achieve in the next few years? What are you planning to do to reach these goals?

My goal is to first and foremost, entertain. Beyond that is the proverbial cherry on top. I hope to finish all my current projects in 2016, as well as turn one of them into a screenplay. I will always be seen with a calendar or agenda in my hands to stay on top of things, goals. Also, I would love to research more locations for book inspirations by travelling more. Two of my most favourites are books and travel! Why not put them together?

Great plans. Books and travel are definitely a great combination, almost as good as books and cats – lol. Sorry, I just happen to be partial to felines especially when I can include them in my books. Your goals sound quite worthy. Good luck with them.

What type of reader are you hoping to attract? Who do you believe would be most interested in reading your books?

Women and men of all ages! Of course, this depends on which book we are referring to. Some of my works are for 18+ audience. If you love romance, pure, simple love, and the challenges the heroes and heroines face to conquer it, then my books are for you.

Sounds like your novels have wide appeal.

What advice would you give other authors or those still trying to get published?

Keep writing and never give up on a dream! But also, be willing to learn, accept constructive criticisms and challenge yourselves!

What hobbies and interests do you have besides writing?

I love to read books. Travelling and trying out good food can be quite adventurous, and I am trying to master them. I stay healthy by doing yoga, and I run when it’s not freezing. Apart from that, I am with my husband and kids.

What do you like most and least about being an author? What is your toughest challenge?

I often get distracted by other story ideas, or characters. I am a pantser-plotter. Most of the time, I start writing without any structured plotting beforehand. Halfway through, I begin to plot. I wish that I am better organized than I am now with writing. One day, I will write a fully plotted novel.

You sound like me – lol. I was totally a pantster when I wrote A STONE’S THROW, but somehow I ended up adding a twist that people tell me that didn’t see coming (maybe because I didn’t see it coming either – lol). For the sequel, I created a flexible plot outline but am still allowing myself a bit of pantsing. I find there are pluses and minuses to both writing styles.

Author Spotlight Natalina Reis

Welcome to the Limitless Library Lounge where I interview fellow authors from Limitless Publishing. Today, I am chatting with Natalina Bell (pen name Natalina Reis) from Woodbridge, Virginia.

I understand you have a novel that is just being released by Limitless tomorrow, January 19th. Can you give me some details about it and any of your other works?

I am brand new to Limitless. This is my first book published with them or ever. My soon to be released novel (January 19) is a standalone romance, titled We Will Always Have the Closet. I am currently working on a speculative novel titled The Jewel which I am very excited about.

That’s great. It’s important to have writing goals. Can you describe yours to us in further detail? What do you hope to achieve in the next few years? What are you planning to do to reach these goals?

I want to write stories that are well written and entertaining. I want to provide the reader with a dream, a brain vacation, a vision of what could be. I have been writing all my life and being published is a life dream coming true. I hope my writing evolves and that my stories bring as much joy to the readers as they bring me as a writer.

That’s awesome, Natalina. I have very similar goals and have also been writing since childhood. A STONE’S THROW was my first traditionally published novel. I self-published my first novel, CLOUDY RAINBOW in 2008 and then took some time off to concentrate on my work as a librarian and mom, but now I’ve been inspired to keep writing and have already finished a sequel that I hope to publish soon. I absolutely love your term “brain vacation.” I feel that most fiction readers want an escape that provides them with entertainment and relaxation. It’s not that they want to stop thinking, but they want to have a more enjoyable focus away from their day-to-day routines.

Is there anything else you’d like to tell us about your upcoming book or your writing in general?

My upcoming book is a romance that puts more emphasis on romance and less on the physical side of things. Since I love mysteries I have written a bit of that into the story as well. I find it almost impossible to write anything without at least a touch of romance.

That sounds very much like my book, Natalina. Some people have considered my romantic suspense a cozy because I don’t feature any explicit sex either, and I know what you mean that romance is important in a book. Most people enjoy reading romances and mysteries. I like to think that I combine both in mine, and it sounds like you do, as well.

What advice would you give other authors or those still trying to get published?

Stick to it no matter how many times you get rejected. It took me years and I can hardly believe it’s finally happening. Keep writing, sharpening your skills as a writer, exploring where your stories can take you. Also, join a good non-judgmental writing group. My women’s writing group has been a treasure of resources, critique, support and ideas.

Great suggestions. I agree with all of them. Determination is a very important quality for an author to develop, and writing groups can be extremely helpful. We are planning to start one in March at my library as many patrons have shown an interest (I think my book spurred them to start asking). One of our regular patrons who is 90 years old and is doing well mentally and physically is one of the biggest requesters. He has shared with me parts of the legal thriller he is writing. It’s wonderful that someone of that age is interested in publishing.

Besides writing, do you have any other hobbies or interests?

I love reading, music, art, and dancing. But I also love movies, good television, knitting and COFFEE! I am also a linguist who speaks five different languages and really hopes to learn at least one non-Latin alphabetic language before I die.

Five languages? That’s incredible. I wish I’d kept up my college Spanish. I was an A student. Our library has a database that features many languages that can be studied online at home. I wish I had the time to take advantage of it. It sounds like you have a nice variety of interests.

What do you like most and least about being an author? What is your toughest challenge?

I love that writing gives me such a freedom to dream and have an excuse to go into all these fictional worlds without feeling I am totally crazy. But being an author can be also very isolating. People who do not write don’t quite understand the magic of the art you are often left alone with no-one to share your passion. My toughest challenge as a writer is time. I am a full time teacher and I often have a lot of trouble carving time to write. I often walk around for hours with this insane desire to write, a great idea in my head and not a minute to sit down and actually do it.

I have the same issue, Natalina. I work full-time as a librarian. I’ve made it a habit to write an hour each morning before I go to work and that seems to help somewhat. I wish I had more time to devote to it but between work, keeping up with social media, my family, etc. it’s very tough. I know others have this same challenge.

I understand you have a novel that is just being released by Limitless today. Can you give me some details about it and the series it is part of?

I was signed with Limitless in September 2015 thanks to #Pitmad on Twitter. My debut novel SHADES OF SYDNEY will be released today, January 12^th, 2016. Sydney will have three books.

I write contemporary new adult and young adult. SHADES OF SYDNEY is my only upcoming release so far. I’m still editing book two and writing book three. I also have about three other books in-progress. I also love writing vampire books.

Nice. Sounds like you have some great writing goals. Can you describe them to us in further details? What do you hope to achieve in the next few years? What are you planning to do to reach these goals?

My goal is to publish my eleven books I have living on my laptop and the other five or six that are in-progress, once I finish them of course. Not to mention writing all the ideas I have saved in my summaries/ideas document. After my books are published, and hopefully the readers love my characters as much as I do, I want to make them movies. I was a film minor in college and all I want to do is make movies. I also have a rock star trilogy I want to make a TV show. I already have the first two episodes written thanks to my TV writing class. As for my plans to reach my goals, I need to focus and find a way into Hollywood, which isn’t easy to do.

Very interesting. Good luck with all of that.

What type of reader are you hoping to attract? Who do you believe would be most interested in reading your books?

I think my type of reader is teens up to people in their 30s-40s. Thanks to Wattpad, I’ve learned my readers come from everywhere and I love them all, but I’ve noticed I usually have teens and people in their 20s. I think people who are a fan of romance, action, and just love new adult and young adult in general will enjoy my books. I’ve loved reading forever and to have my books next to Sarah Dessen and Ellen Hopkins has been my dream for a while now.

Dreams are great. You have to believe in them and work to make them happen. Speaking of that, what advice would you give other authors or those still trying to get published?

Never ever give up! I was rejected over and over again for years for two different books. You can’t make everyone happy. There’s going to be something that someone will hate about your book, but don’t change it for them. If you love it then keep pounding the pavement and one day you will get published. You still have a lot of work to do even when the door opens for you, but it’s so worth it, trust me.

I hear that from all new authors, and I agree with it myself. I was rather lucky in having A STONE’S THROW accepted pretty early in my submission process. They also found me through a Twitter event.

Besides writing, do you have any other hobbies or interests?

Ha! I kind of rescue cats, I ended up with four of them. So I spend time with them and my dog. I have an addiction to rock concerts. You can usually find me in Barnes and Noble. I love TV and movies. Almost every day I watch Friends, the best show ever and never gets old. I would love to work on some more films and maybe go on tour with a band, but these are crazy hopes.

Talking cats, I have two of my own and have always had some since childhood. I try to put pets in my novels. There’s a library cat and a Golden Retriever in A STONE’S THROW, and those pets will also be in the sequel I just finished and hope to publish this spring.

What do you like most and least about being an author? What is your toughest challenge?

I love sharing my characters with others and hearing how my books help them, make them happy/sad, whatever. I love it! I don’t like when I want to write yet I find myself online, the internet is my enemy and best friend. My toughest challenge is getting focused, but once I have my outline done and I’m in the zone, no one can stop me.

I feel exactly the same. I think most writers really enjoy knowing that their words can touch people. I also know what social media can do to waste time, but it has its positive side if you can network with people. I agree that you need to be in the “zone” to write. I find that early morning before work is best for me, but the main thing is having a routine and to write each day.

Russian Tattoos—Obsession: excerpt

When we got to the house, I jumped out of the Cadillac like it had a bomb strapped underneath it. I ran inside and crashed into my sexy boyfriend’s waiting arms.

Vladimir lifted me up.

I wrapped my legs around his body.

He sat me down on the kitchen counter.

We made out like we had guns to our heads.

Boris walked in the door, grumbling in Russian.

“Did you miss me, Vladimir?” I asked.

“No.” He flashed his crooked smile.

I shoved him in the chest.

“I couldn’t breathe the whole time we were apart,” he recanted. “Isn’t that right, Boris?”

“Da. His lips were blue.” Boris shook his head wanting nothing to do with our gooey love fest. “Thank heavens you came back to resuscitate him, Carter.”

“Let me make sure he’s okay.” I ran my fingers through his wavy hair and kissed him again, louder and sloppier that time. Vladimir liked it. He flung off my hat and scarf, unzipped my coat, and tossed it on the floor. “I think he’s okay now, Boris. I saved him.”

We laughed.

Boris mumbled in Russian and left the house.

Vladimir noticed what I was wearing and grinned. I had on a red Christmas-themed t-shirt that I borrowed from Kiki with “naughty” scrolled across the front in sparkle letters. It was too short, too tight, and I hadn’t bothered to wear a bra.

He licked his lips and lifted my shirt, but I stopped him from taking it off. From my perch on the counter, I had a perfect view of the white murderer van parked by the basketball court. “Not here.” I closed my hands around his. “Show me your bedroom.”

He scooped me up and swept me away. I had never been in there before—never even snuck a peek inside. I thought it would look like the rest of the house, decorated with a designer’s touch but not too personal. I was wrong. I spied a soccer ball on the floor, a collection of egg-shaped music boxes on the dresser, and photos of his family lined the walls. Vladimir enjoyed seeing my reaction to the side of him I’d yet to know.

I was born and raised in southern California and relocated to beautiful eastern Washington state in 2002. The rural small towns that speckle this vast area have inspired my ideal setting for most of the stories I write. The pine and tamarack trees covering the towering mountains, the shimmering lakes and rivers, the abundant wildlife, and the feeling of a time forgotten, all stir so many of my creative juices. I can’t thank my parents enough for dragging this city kid on long roadtrips up to this rugged foreign area, because now it is my home and I truly love my life here.

Reading was something that spurred me to begin writing at a young age. I enjoyed creating characters, different settings, and describing anything and everything. Storytelling, I have found is something I have inherited from both of my parents. I love attention to detail, using words to fully bring the picture alive, that is something I got from my dad. Creating characters and figuring out their story and how to achieve their happy ending comes from my mom. Then there is the smell of a book, new or old, the weight of it in your hands as you balance it open, seeing all those beautifully typed words spun and woven into sentences, this was created by a writer. I knew that was what I wanted to be when I grew up and here I am today, a real author.

Romance, I simply love it, that’s why I write it. I remember my mom giving me my very first paperback romance novel. It was a pretty exciting one filled with suspense and an overall excellent storyline, she had just read it and she felt it was suitable for my teenage eyes. That was it, I was hooked. I began to devour these romance stories that varied over the years from sweet to sultry, I consumed thousands of books and stories over the years. Each time I finished reading a novel, the desire to write my own grew stronger. As ideas for books swirled in my mind, it always had a romantic element to it, and I suppose it always will. What is there not to love about falling in love and finding that special person to share your life with? Who doesn’t wish for passion, butterflies in your stomach, and that happily ever after?

As a reader, I can’t even begin to thank all of the writers that have created so many emotions for me, falling in love with characters, mourning their loss, sighing as I close the final chapter or smiling when everyone lives happily ever after. As a writer, I just want to do the same.

Author Spotlight Jennifer Allis Provost

Welcome to the Limitless Library Lounge where I interview fellow authors from Limitless Publishing. Today, I am chatting with Jennifer Allis Provost from Springfield, Massachusetts.

Thanks for joining me, Jennifer. Please take a seat and make yourself comfortable.
I understand you have a novel that is just being released by Limitless today. Can you give me some details about it and the series it is part of?

My first Limitless title, Changing Teams, was released November 10, 2015. The sequel, Changing Scenes, releases today, January 5, 2016. There will be two more in the series, Changing Fate and Changing Dates, release dates TBD.

My series with Limitless is contemporary romance—however, I wouldn’t call myself a romance writer. I’ve also got an urban fantasy series published through Spencer Hill Press called the Copper Legacy. Copper Girl and Copper Ravens are out now, and Copper Veins will release May 3, 2016. I’ve also got an epic fantasy series out, with the first installment, Heir to the Sun, available now. The sequel, The Virgin Queen, is being finalized as we speak—stay tuned for a release date! I also have short fiction in several anthologies. Check out my website for more specifics.

Wow! You certainly sound like you have a lot of writing going on. Can you tell us a little bit more about your books?

Since this is the Limitless Lounge, let’s talk about the Changes series. The first book is all about Sam and Britt, and a rather large secret Sam is hiding. Like, elephant in the room large. Britt thinks she’s found everything she’s ever wanted in Sam. Then the cat’s out of the bag, and she wonders if she can ever trust him again.

The second book, Changing Scenes, follows Britt’s best friend Astrid. She’s a world-renowned model used to fabulous parties and wearing shoes that cost more than her rent. When she meets a small-town chef named Donnie, she realizes that image isn’t everything. But how will Donnie ever fit into her life, and she in his?

Would you describe your goals as a writer to us. What do you hope to achieve in the next few years? What are you planning to do to reach these goals?

It’s funny you should ask this, since I’m currently transitioning away from my career of the past fifteen years into a more creative field. I spent quite a lot of time—too much—trying to be a grown up, and in early 2015 I decided that I just wasn’t going to spend my days as a cubicle monkey. So I decided to take the plunge and earn my MFA, which will be complete in 2017. With that, I’ll be able to take on more adjunct teaching positions (I already teach marketing and writing workshops) to supplement my writing income. I’ve also built up a small backlist, and I’m set to release five, possibly six books in 2016, and at least one short story. To sum up, my goal is to leave the cubicle farm behind by 2017. Nope, not ambitious at all.

Congratulations on your upcoming degree, and best of luck with all your “unambitious” plans – lol.

What type of reader are you hoping to attract? Who do you believe would be most interested in reading your books?

Anyone who appreciates complex relationships, romance, and a bit of adventure will enjoy my books. Even my contemporary romances have adventure. After all, what’s more adventurous than love?

That’s so true. I think my books tend toward mystery, but I always think the romantic touches add something no matter what genre you write.

What advice would you give other authors or those still trying to get published?

Get out and network. Follow writers on Twitter, join a book group, hang out at your local libraries and bookstores, and talk to people. If you can, attend some writing conferences, especially those where you can pitch agents and editors directly and get feedback on your work. By and large writers are very supportive, and the advice you’ll get from them will be priceless.

I like that advice especially the part about going to libraries since I’m a librarian, but I also agree it’s great to have the feedback and support of fellow writers.

What hobbies and interests do you have besides writing?

Does drinking coffee count as a hobby? Wait, that’s more life support. I have five year old twins, so you could say that I enjoy ferrying them around and peace and quiet.

Oh, my gosh. How do you do it? I have an 11-year old, so now that she spends so much time in her private space, I have more time to write. I guess that explains your answer about drinking coffee.

What do you like most and least about being an author? What is your toughest challenge?

My toughest challenge right now is balancing the work I want to do—writing—with my day job. Hence the exit plan described above.

Makes sense. My work compliments my writing, but it’s hard to manage both at the same time. I’d love to write full-time, but I can’t give up my day job just yet. My dream is that, by the time I retire, I have built up my writing and fan base enough to do it full time.
