In this delightful new series by the New York Times bestselling author of the Flower Shop Mysteries, Athena Spencer comes back home to work with her crazy big Greek family at their garden center. But she never expected a return to her roots would mean protecting her family from murder . . .

After her divorce, Athena has returned to coastal Michigan to work in her family’s garden center and raise her son, while also caring for a mischievous wild raccoon and fending off her family’s annoying talent for nagging. Working alone at the garden center one night, Athena is startled by a handsome stranger who claims to be the rightful owner of a valuable statue her grandfather purchased at a recent estate sale.

But she has even bigger problems on her plate. The powerful Talbot family from whom her pappoús bought the statue is threatening to raze the shops on Greene Street’s “Little Greece” to make way for a condo. The recent death of the family’s patriarch already seemed suspicious, but now it’s clear that a murderer is in their midst. Athena will have to live up to her warrior goddess namesake to protect her family from a killer and save their community from ruin . . .

Cat Latimer and her writer’s retreat group go on a hiking trip—but a murderer has been lurking off the beaten path . . .

Cat’s sweetheart, Seth, is going all out on an outing into the local mountains—for the benefit of the writing group Cat’s hosting at her Colorado B&B. But when they try to identify some plant and animal life, they find death instead. The body belongs to a man with a gold claim a few miles away. Instead of striking it rich, he’s been struck down.

To his surprise, Seth recognizes the victim from his military days—and up to now believed he’d already died during his last tour of duty. Now Cat has to solve this mystery before the killer takes a hike . . .”

EXCERPT FROM A FIELD GUIDE TO HOMICIDE

“Stay close and don’t drag behind.” Seth waved Archer and Jocelyn to the front. “You two after me, Cat, you can be in the middle, and, Tristin, can you and Sydney bring up the end?”

“Works for me.” Tristin circled his arms around Sydney and kissed her neck. “But we might lag behind a little.”

“Perv.” Sydney stepped out of his embrace, but her smile didn’t waver. “Don’t worry about us, we’ll keep up.”

“Great. Then we’re off.” Seth started up the trail, and Cat waited for the first couple to follow.

The first hour went fast with a few stops to take pictures, as well as compare plants with the pictures in the book. By the time they’d reached the first outlook, where Seth was already stopped and waiting for them, Cat’s legs ached. She leaned on a tree and stretched out her calves. “Too many

hours sitting at the desk.”

Jocelyn plopped on the bench that the Forest Service had set up near the lookout. She took out her water bottle and took a long sip before talking. “I haven’t done anything like this since college. I used to be on the cross-country team and ran for miles. I guess I should pick back up that hobby.”

“I can’t believe they have a full setup here.” Archer glanced at the outhouse. “Tell me that’s

functional.”

“The Forest Service maintains this trail year-round because it’s also a cross-country ski trail. For most of the hiking trails the maintenance is shut down November first or at the first snowfall,” Seth explained as Archer made his way to the small building.

“Great.”

Watching the now-trotting Archer, Tristin laughed. “I guess when you got to go . . .”

Sydney slapped his arm. “Don’t be mean. Give Cat your camera and come over here so we can get a picture of us by the overlook.”

Tristin took his camera off from the lanyard that kept it around his neck. “Do you mind? We

have at least one couple picture from every hike we take. And Sydney’s right, this is a perfect spot.”

“Not a problem.” Cat glanced at the expensive camera and pointed to a button. “This one?”

“Yep, just point and shoot. The camera will focus in on our faces so it will set the correct angle and background for you.” He grinned as he made his way to stand by his wife. “It was pricy, but our photo quality for the blog has gone up at least by ten times.”

“He’s always about the picture.” Sydney put an arm around him and a hand on his chest.

Love, Cat thought. It was apparent that these two adventurers loved each other. She took several pictures, then looked at the camera to make sure she got a good photo. Frowning, she looked closer and when Tristin came back for the camera, she shoved it in his hand and rushed over to the overlook.

“What’s wrong. Did the pictures come out bad?”

Tristin stopped and thumbed through the shots.

“These are great.”

When Cat reached the edge of the lookout, she saw what she’d seen through the lens. A man’s leg stuck out from a huckleberry bush across the valley to the closest mountain. Seth joined her.

“What’s going on? What did you see?” He lowered his voice.

All Cat could do was point toward the bush. She knew when he’d seen the same thing when he took a quick intake of air.

“See if you have cell service and call your uncle. I think our hike is over for the day.” Seth turned and looked at the three guests who were gathered around the bench watching them. Archer came out of the outhouse and frowned.

“Are you all waiting for me?”

Margaret, a girl born with second sight, has the unique ability to bring ghosts trapped between Heaven and Hell back to life. When her parents die suddenly, she goes to live with her beloved grandfather, but the cellar of her grandfather’s ancient inn is haunted by an evil spirit of its own.

In the town of Bungay, a black dog wanders the streets, enslaving the ghosts of those who have died unnatural deaths. When Margaret arrives, these phantoms congregate at the inn, hoping she can free them from the clutches of Hugh Bigod, the 12th century ghost who has drawn them away from Heaven’s White Light in his canine guise.

With the help of her grandfather and the spirits she has befriended, Margaret sets out to defeat Hugh Bigod, only to discover he wants to use her for his own ends – to take over Hell itself.

5-Star Review *****

I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough of this horror book that can also be considered historical fiction. Margaret is a teenage orphan with special powers. She can reincarnate the dead who are trapped between the underworld and heaven. She first experiences this when she spends time with her grandfather at his inn. As she reawakens those who have died violent or unnatural deaths and were tricked into turning away from the white light by an evil man whose presence is seen as a black dog, she discovers each person’s story, and we, the readers, also learn about true historical figures from ancient to present times. When Margaret is captured and brought to the Underworld, we also see a different version of Hell than brimstone and fire. This one features office cubicles where demons track disasters and use the Dark Web to aid terrorists and modern evildoers. Lucifer gets into the act, and Margaret’s (and the world’s) only hope lies with the good incarnates and God. This read will really make you think, and the action is fast-paced. Don’t miss it.

Guest Post and Blog Tour for Glitter, Glam and Contraband, A Delanie Fitzgerald Mystery by Heather Weidner

A Playlist for Glitter, Glam, and Contraband

by Heather Weidner

Thank you so much for letting me visit today. Glitter, Glam, and Contraband is the third novel in my Delanie Fitzgerald mystery series. She is my sassy private investigator who zips around Central Virginia in her black Mustang (usually with the radio blaring).

I love music. It has always been a huge part of my life, and I have playlists for reading, writing, editing, and revising. Music is always on at home or work. (As I write this, Bon Jovi is blasting on my computer speakers.) I love all kinds of genres, but I seem to gravitate back to songs from the Big ‘80s. Songs from my high school and college days will always be my favorites. And that era plays a huge role in the first novel in my series, Secret Lives and Private Eyes.

Private investigator, Delanie Fitzgerald, and her computer hacker partner, Duncan Reynolds, are back for more sleuthing in Glitter, Glam and Contraband. In this fast-paced mystery, the Falcon Investigations team is hired to find out who is stealing from the talent at a local drag show. Delanie gets more than she bargains for and a few makeup tips in the process. Meanwhile, a mysterious sound in the ceiling of her office vexes Delanie. She uses her sleuthing skills to track down the source and uncover a creepy contraband operation.

Glitter, Glam, and Contraband features a strong female sleuth with a knack for getting herself in and out of humorous situations like helping sleezy strip club owner, Chaz Smith on his quest to become Richmond’s next mayor, tracking down missing reptiles, and uncovering hidden valuables from a 100-year-old crime with a Poe connection.

So here’s my playlist for Glitter, Glam, and Contraband. These songs make me think of Delanie, her spunky spirit, her nose for trouble, and of course, her beloved Mustang.

  1. Adam Ant’s “Goody Two Shoes”
  2. Robbin Thompson’s “Candy Apple Red”
  3. Kelly Pickler’s “Red High Heels”
  4. The Weather Girls “It’s Raining Men”
  5. Rachel Platten’s “Fight Song”
  6. Robbin Thompson’s “Sweet Virginia Breeze”
  7. Bruce Springsteen’s “Dancing in the Dark”
  8. Jake Owens’s “Barefoot Blue Jean Night”
  9. Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun”
  10. The Beach Boys’ “Fun, Fun, Fun”
  11. Wilson Pickett’s “Mustang Sally”
  12. Toby Keith’s “Whiskey Girl”
  13. Rascal Flatts’s “Fast Cars and Freedom”
  14. Florida Georgia Line’s “Cruise”
  15. Rascal Flatts’s “Life is a Highway”
  16. Mark Wills’s “Nineteen Something”
  17. Bowling for Soup’s “1985”
  18. And of course, Hall and Oates’s “Private Eyes”

Music is such a big part of our lives. We remember lyrics from songs that were popular ages ago, and it invokes a variety of emotions. This list makes me think of my sassy character and the adventures she has as she tries to track down thieves and smugglers.

Former Manhattan fashion buyer Kelly Quinn is turning her grandmother’s outdated consignment shop into her quaint hometown’s hot spot for upscale style—until her second-hand couture makes the scene of an ice-cold crime . . .

With her bottom line looking a little threadbare, Kelly is going all out to promote the Lucky Cove Resale Boutique. She’s counting on Black Friday to recover her start-up expenses—including a website and an advertising blitz. But the publicity is overkill when two warring divas, and one sparkly evening dress, thrust Kelly and her fledgling business into a scandal she can’t afford.

The gorgeous garment came to Kelly from the walk-in closets of Wendy Johnson, one of reality TV’s Long Island Ladies. When Wendy’s former co-star, Diana Delacourte, graces a Christmas gala in the dress that was once her rival’s, a very public catfight ensues. But is Wendy to blame when sequin-clad Diana turns up dead? Dodging the show’s ever-present cameras—and a detective’s stern warnings—Kelly hunts for a killer before the powerful celebrity-suspect makes good on her threats and rips her to shreds . . .

Blue Ridge library director Amy Webber learns it wasn’t all peace and love among the “flower children” when a corpse is unearthed on the grounds of a 1960s commune.

Taylorsford Public Library director Amy Webber’s friend “Sunny” Fields is running for mayor. But nothing puts a damper on a campaign like an actual skeleton in a candidate’s closet. Sunny’s grandparents ran a commune back in the 1960s on their organic farm. But these former hippies face criminal charges when human remains are found in their fields–and a forensic examination reveals that the death was neither natural nor accidental.

With Sunny’s mayoral hopes fading, Amy sets her wedding plans aside, says “not yet” to the dress, and uses her research skills to clear her best friend’s family. Any of the now-elderly commune members could have been the culprit. As former hippies perish one by one, Amy and her friends Richard, Aunt Lydia, and Hugh Chen pursue every lead. But if Amy can’t find whoever killed these “flower children,” someone may soon be placing flowers on her grave.

About Virginia Gilbert

Victoria Gilbert, raised in the shadow of the Blue Ridge Mountains, turned her early obsession with reading into a dual career as an author and librarian. Victoria has worked as a reference librarian, research librarian, and library director. When not writing or reading, she likes to spend her time watching films, gardening, or traveling.
