Charlotte Burke can’t shake her recurring dream.

Over and over again she dreams of finding a mysterious journal on a candlelit desk while wandering through a strange house in the middle of the night. Every dream has shown her a framed picture of an old woman sitting at the same desk, except the latest version. Last night, the woman stood and offered Charlotte a keyring. In the morning, Charlotte woke up with her car keys in her hand.

Her best friend is worried but skeptical when Charlotte insists the house is real. The dream is metaphorical, Ivy says, reflecting Charlotte’s restless state. Ivy gifts her a journal and urges her to take the trip her subconscious is demanding before she wakes up behind the wheel. A roadtrip of self-discovery will help Charlotte figure out what she really wants.

Charlotte agrees to the roadtrip but not for Ivy’s reasons. To her, the house, the journal and the woman in her dream are all too real. She sets off to do the impossible. If she can find the house and uncover its secrets in time, she might save far more than her driftless life.

Two Truths and a Lie

(Guest Post by Karen Ringel)

There’s a social icebreaker game called “Two Truths and a Lie.”  If you’re unfamiliar with it, the idea is simple.  Each person at a gathering writes down three statements about themselves.  As the game title suggests, two are true and one is not.  The object of the game is for other participants to guess which is which.  Curious truths are interesting gems to learn and can also misdirect players from the lie.  Clever lies can go undetected nestled amongst truths that subvert or balance expectations.

I love reading books that use similar tactics, especially if the story gets a little otherworldly.  Take me down a well-known road past two weird but real tourist traps before insisting there was a little magical bookshop on the far corner all along.  Walk me through a World War II battle with strange-but-true coincidences before a subtle shift changes history.  True is adjacent to plausible.  Plausible is adjacent to possible.  Even if I don’t believe in magic or time portals or what have you, I stay immersed in the story if the writer told me two truths before the lie.

Driftless Spirits starts with Charlotte taking a roadtrip and looking for signs that might lead her to a house she’s only seen in a recurring dream.  She drives out of the Chicago area towards Wisconsin.  She takes I-90 West and crosses the border.  She stops at the rest area near Beloit.  Growing up in the Chicago suburbs, my family took that exact route on camping vacations almost every summer.  It’s very real…

…Until it’s not.  Charlotte finds something at the rest area that doesn’t exist as far as I know.  But it’s very believable it could.  Her route diverts from real roads to plausible roads.  One subtle sign leads to another, more and more peculiar, and suddenly she’s in my fictional town of Casten’s Horn.  The town is entirely made up but it’s nestled in the very real Driftless Area of Wisconsin.  As I live here, I’ve taken my time to build Casten’s Horn inspired by the true history of the region.  From ancestry to industry, I’ve tried to make it as convincing as possible.

Casten’s Horn has all the trappings of the type of cozy town found in the Driftless.  Homespun traditions, friendly residents and a local police chief all cross through Charlotte’s story.  I hope the reader is so drawn into the plausibility of Casten’s Horn that the crime Charlotte unravels there and the secret of the house from her dream are easily accepted.  It’s the first secret of many buried in the town.  Charlotte will have to use her instincts to discern what’s true and what’s a lie.

About Karen Ringel

In 2020, Karen Ringel retired from an engineering career to settle in the Driftless Area of Wisconsin with her husband. After taking some time to adapt to the rural lifestyle, she started creating the fictional Casten’s Horn, imagining how a small town might have been founded in the secluded valley she lives in. Always a researcher at heart, her books include references to real bits of history and traditions in an effort to enhance her stories. She writes what she likes to read: small-town mysteries with a cozy feel.

Call-in radio host Ashley Compton is Las Vegas’s best friend when it comes to giving relationship tips to strangers. But when a repeat caller is found murdered after exposing her woes on the air and accepting the challenge to put up or shut up, Ashley questions if her homespun advice was the catalyst for the murder.

Afraid of losing her job and destroying her reputation, Ashley heads to the seedy side of Las Vegas to snoop around. There she encounters shady dealings: lies, gambling, adultery, and potential criminal activities. When her two-timing and felonious suspects spout glib excuses to justify their behaviors, she digs deeper and is threatened, injured, and gets what she dishes out: advice she doesn’t always like.

Can Ashley’s sleuthing skills catch the killer, or will she end up just another crime statistic? Can she save her career, or will she be put on the Do-Not-Call list?

GUEST POST

What is a Cozy Mystery?

If you are an avid mystery fan, you probably know the various sub-genres of the mystery group. But I thought I’d start with a refresher. Here’s a baker’s dozen of the most popular sub-genres:

  1. Cozy – an amateur sleuth
  2. Traditional – an amateur sleuth or Private Investigator
  3. Locked room – impossible crimes, at first
  4. Paranormal – ghosts, psychics, and/or magic
  5. Historical – at least 50 years prior, with the most popular tending to be the 20s-40s
  6. Suspense – what might happen
  7. Thriller – time clock of what will happen unless it is stopped
  8. Hardboiled/Noir – gritty, corruption, and usually includes a Private Investigator
  9. Caper/Heist – usually comedic, and is more about the crime planning than solving the crime
  10. Legal – courtroom dramas usually included as thrillers
  11. Police procedurals – a step-by-step of the investigation
  12. Medical – involving medical anomalies for crimes
  13. Espionage – international spy, or corporate are the most popular explanations

Let’s go back in history a bit about the mystery.

Back during the Golden Age, several British mystery writers (Anthony Berkeley, Dorothy Sayers, Agatha Christie, G.K. Chesterson, Ronald Knox, and a few others) created The Detection Club. This was formed to maintain a level of standards in detective fiction, called the fair play rules, which later became known as Father Knox’s 10 Commandments (https://murder-mayhem.com/the-detection-club-rules). It was considered tongue in cheek, because many of the authors back then didn’t agree with the rules. But apparently Knox put them in place anyway. They also created an oath (https://elegsabiff.com/2013/04/20/a-z-challenge-rules-of-the-detection-club-circa-1929/) that basically promises to use intelligence and not gut reactions to solve the crime.

Times have changed over the decades, and many of the rules aren’t followed anymore. The point of the rules was to keep an author honest, respect the reader’s intelligence, and make sure there was no surprise that no reader could have anticipated. At least that’s how I interpret the rules.

And in case you didn’t know, The Detection Club still exists.

Is there such a list of commandments for the cozy mystery? Officially? There is no club with a list of rules, although there should be. But a cozy mystery has its own standards and expectations the author should follow, albeit some rules are stretched or bent, possibly taking it  out of the cozy realm and into the traditional or even further.

  1. Murder happens off the page. Usually, the dead body is stumbled upon.
  2. No gratuitous profanity. This can go to the extreme of no cussing at all, just using Sesame Street swearing, or the occasional damn.
  3. Sex must be off the page, if romance exists in the story (which is not mandatory).
  4. No children or animals are harmed in the book.
  5. It must be an amateur sleuth with a separate occupation and/or hobby included in the plot, a private investigator, or is retired. There is a plethora of occupations used, with some even have inserts, like recipes, scrapbooking tips, etc.
  6. The setting is a small town or a portion of a big city (like Soho in New York City).
  7. The characters are a close-knit group, with at least one quirky character (that’s my addition. I think it should be mandatory, but it isn’t).
  8. It often has comedic relief, from just a small amount to being a flat-out comedy of errors type.
  9. An observant reader may not figure out the villain, but the explanation at the end will always lead to the reader saying, “oh yeah!”, not “huh?”.
  10. Justice must prevail.

In other words, a true cozy mystery would be rated G on the silver screen, with traditional mysteries possibly crossing the line to barely rated PG (not even PG-13, in my humble opinion). My stories are just over that invisible line for two reasons:

  1. My stories take place in cities and not always kept to a specific niche area (the big city is what I know).
  2. There is not gratuitous language, but I do have some innuendos.

Some believe Agatha Christie is the queen of the cozy mystery. Her birthday is hailed as National Cozy Mystery Day. I don’t believe her work is exclusively cozy, and many of my author friends agree. Some examples of her books that are not considered cozies are:

  • The Body in the Library – Miss Marple
  • Death on the Nile – Hercule Poirot
  • And Then There Were None – stand alone
  • Ordeal by Innocence – stand alone
  • Endless Night – stand alone

When people ask me what a cozy mystery is, I don’t point to Agatha Christie. My reference point is the television show Murder, She Wrote. There are many people who’ve never read a mystery get that reference. Thinking of a formal tea is another wayh to look at it. If you want to learn more about the cozy mystery sub-genre, check out the Malice Domestic Convention website (https://www.malicedomestic.net).

One final note. I created my own cozy mystery oath for the readers:

Do you promise to gently bend book spines, read each story with an open mind, use the skills amateur sleuths have bestowed upon you, applaud shenanigans, enjoy the travel to mundane and exotic places alike, laugh out loud, become fully vested in the characters, cry over heartbreaks, read just one more chapter, and overindulge in chocolates and beverages?

Well, do you?

NEW RELEASE: Looking for Lucy, A Gothic-type Mystery by Debbie De Louise

I’m proud to announce my new standalone, gothic-type mystery, Looking for Lucy.

She was never meant to be the brave one.

Despite their different personalities, cousins Mary and Lucy are closer than sisters. Mary, a teacher in a small town, fears change and suffers from claustrophobia. Lucy, a thrill-seeker, travels around the world in search of adventure.

When Lucy goes missing, Mary, her mother, and aunt visit a Long Island mansion called Hollingham Hall where Lucy had been employed as a tour guide before she disappeared. There, Mary meets three men, one of whom may have been romantically involved with Lucy – a charming historian, a volatile artist, and a friendly landscaper.

As Mary searches for her cousin, she is drawn deeper into Hollingham’s labyrinthine gardens and shadowed corridors where she discovers a chilling connection between Lucy and a woman who vanished seventy years ago on the eve of her wedding. She also learns of the “ghost cat” rumored to prowl the property.

When strange events take place at Hollingham, the police are called to investigate. But is Lucy alive and is her disappearance connected to the missing bride or one of the men on the estate?

A mystery of illicit affairs, hidden passageways, and family secrets, Looking for Lucy is the perfect read for fans of gothic novels, psychological thrillers, and atmospheric suspense.

A brazen killer sparks Theodosia Browning’s sense of justice in this latest installment of the New York Times bestselling series.

As fireflies dazzle like tiny glowing lanterns, tea maven Theodosia hosts an elegant evening tea on the patio of the Tangled Rose B and B. But in this gentle darkness an intruder has made their way in and slipped deadly drugs into the baked Alaska of Mrs. Van Courtland, one of Charleston’s local grande dames. Shocked by this brazen act, urged on by Mrs. V’s grieving son, Theodosia begins her own shadow investigation. Soon, she finds herself at odds with a greedy developer, the questionable residents of Honey Badger House, a vengeful ex-daughter-in-law, ne’er do well relatives, and a housekeeper who knows all the secrets.

As Theodosia hosts a Moulin Rouge Tea and a Queen Victoria Tea, her tea sommelier Drayton is assaulted by a masked stranger and the fiancé of Mrs. V’s son is kidnapped. It’s only at the Starry Starry Night black tie ball that Theodosia stumbles upon the killer and gets pulled into a dramatic life and death chase.

About Laura Childs

Laura Childs is the New York Times bestselling author of the Tea Shop Mysteries, Scrapbook Mysteries, and Cackleberry Club Mysteries. In her previous life she was CEO/Creative Director of her own marketing firm and authored several screenplays. She is married to a professor of Chinese art history, loves to travel, rides horses, enjoys fundraising for various non-profits, and has two Chinese Shar-Pei dogs.

Laura specializes in cozy mysteries that have the pace of a thriller (a thrillzy!) Her three series are:

The Tea Shop Mysteries – set in the historic district of Charleston and featuring Theodosia Browning, owner of the Indigo Tea Shop. Theodosia is a savvy entrepreneur and pet mom to service dog Earl Grey. She’s also an intelligent, focused amateur sleuth who doesn’t rely on coincidences or inept police work to solve crimes. This charming series is highly atmospheric and rife with the history and mystery that is Charleston.

The Scrapbooking Mysteries – a slightly edgier series that takes place in New Orleans. The main character, Carmela, owns Memory Mine scrapbooking shop in the French Quarter and is forever getting into trouble with her friend, Ava, who owns the Juju Voodoo shop. New Orleans’ spooky above-ground cemeteries, jazz clubs, bayous, and Mardi Gras madness make their presence known here!

The Cackleberry Club Mysteries – set in Kindred, a fictional town in the Midwest. In a rehabbed Spur station, Suzanne, Toni, and Petra, three semi-desperate, forty-plus women have launched the Cackleberry Club. Eggs are the morning specialty here and this cozy cafe even offers a book nook and yarn shop. Business is good but murder could lead to the cafe’s undoing! This series offers recipes, knitting, cake decorating, and a dash of spirituality.

From author Lena Gregory comes another decadently delightful cozy mystery …

Spring has finally sprung on the south shore of eastern Long Island, New York, and Danika Delaney is ready to take a break from running her old-fashioned malt shop, the Coffee & Cream Café, to help her mom start planting for the season. With visions of colorful tulips and delicate daffodils in mind, Danika and her mother browse through the local garden center, where they can’t help but notice a confrontation between out-of-towner Sebastian Krane and the local cashier. Unfortunately, as Krane storms off, aggravated and not paying attention, he hops into his BMW, and crashes right into Mrs. Delaney as she’s backing up in her borrowed pickup truck. As if that weren’t enough to put a damper on her sunny mood, Krane then has the nerve to file a lawsuit against her. But when Dani shows up at his mansion to try to straighten things out, she finds him dead, with a knife in his back. Apparently, someone had it out for Sebastian. Someone other than her mother. A fact Dani sets out to prove with the help of her sidekicks, Gwen and Eli, wading through a slew of shady suspects from the victim’s stormy past. Can Dani clear her mother’s name and find the truth behind Krane’s murder? Or will Dani be in danger of pushing up daisies herself this spring?

About Lena Gregory

Lena Gregory is the author of the Bay Island Psychic Mysteries, which take place on a small island between the north and south forks of Long Island, New York, the All-Day Breakfast Café Mysteries, which are set on the outskirts of Florida’s Ocala National Forest, the Mini-Meadows Mysteries, set in a community of tiny homes in Central Florida, and the Coffee & Cream Café Mysteries, which take place in a small town on the south shore of eastern Long Island, New York.

Lena grew up in a small town on the south shore of eastern Long Island, but she recently traded in cold, damp, gray winters for the warmth and sunshine of central Florida, where she now lives with her husband, three kids, son-in-law, and four dogs. Her hobbies include spending time with family, reading, and walking. Her love for writing developed when her youngest son was born and didn’t sleep through the night. She works full time as a writer and a freelance editor and is a member of Sisters in Crime.

Three cases. One body. Zero chance of staying out of trouble.

Kate Tessler may have thought her days of chasing danger were over. But the former war correspondent’s “retirement” in sunny Paradise, Arizona, is anything but quiet. With her eccentric circle of friends and colleagues, Kate has built a new life—full of mysteries, mayhem, and the occasional stakeout—as she works towards earning her PI license.

After wrapping her last case, Kate wonders what’s next when three cases—all brought by friends—fall into her lap. Squatters in a snowbird’s house, local pedigree dogs disappearing, and smash and grab burglaries at local pot shops. Kate juggles the cases with help from her usual cast of amateur crime solvers, including the teen sons of Paradise’s mayor. As she digs, Kate suspects at least two cases are connected.

But things turn deadly when a late-night stakeout leads Kate and one teen sidekick, interested in investigative work, straight to a body. Was it a gruesome accident—or something far more sinister?

With humor and high stakes, The Accidental Detective mysteries prove that danger and friendship don’t retire quietly.

Recipes in Mysteries

Many cozy mysteries include recipes or craft instructions. That makes sense when your main character is a baker or owns a craft store. My amateur detective is a war correspondent forced to move back to her parents’ house in Arizona after an injury. People come with to her with problems because of her background, which makes it easy to come up with cases for her to work. She is not, however, much of a cook or baker.

On the other hand, she collects a number of helpers, including her father’s friends, Marty and Joe Washington. Marty likes to bring the blender and ingredients for margaritas to their planning meetings. Joe has gotten into baking in his retirement, so he might bring muffins, cupcakes, or cookies.

Quick Peek:

“But the really important question is, did Joe bring cookies or something?”
“Yeah, and we’d better claim ours while there are any left.”
We grabbed a couple of oatmeal raisin cookies, which might sound basic but anything Joe baked was sure to be good. I both appreciated his retirement baking experiments and bemoaned the amount of discipline required to keep me from eating way too much sugar. Good thing we had so many people to deplete the resource, including active teenagers.
Then we planned our sting operation. Yes, we were really doing one of those again, dog help us. After all, they’d worked out so well before—like the time Jen and I had nearly gotten shot. Or the time Dad had to barricade himself against a killer. Or the time Dad, Jen, and I had all nearly gotten shot. But we’d always survived! Some might say that’s a low bar for success, but I figured if everyone was still able to enjoy the margarita party, I’d call it a win.

In honor of Joe, here’s a quick and tasty cookie recipe. Enjoy these with a good book.

Joe’s Oatmeal Raisin (or Chocolate Chip) Cookies

1 cup (two sticks) butter, softened
1 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 cup granulated sugar
2 eggs
2 tablespoons milk or water
2 teaspoons vanilla
1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 1/2 cups oats
about 2 cups of raisins, other dried fruit, nuts, and/or chocolate chips

Heat oven to 325°F.
Beat butter and both sugars until creamy. Add eggs, milk or water, and vanilla. Beat well.
Add flour, baking soda, and salt. Mix well.
Blend in oats and raisins, chocolate chips, nuts, etc. You can add more or less of the raisin/nuts/chocolate chips depending on how well you like your cookies packed with these goodies. You can also use a combination of these items.
Drop spoonfuls onto a cookie sheet. For a chewy cookie, bake 8 to 10 minutes. Pull from the oven when they are still looking a bit gooey in the middle and let them cool on the pan for 5 to 10 minutes. Store the cookies in an airtight container, or immediately share them with your crime-fighting gang.
