Announcing Sneaky the Library Cat’s Blog

sneakysbloggraphic

Sneaky the Siamese from my Cobble Cove mysteries complained that he was overshadowed by the human characters in the first book, A STONE’S THROW, even though he helped Alicia discover an important clue. Then, after he looked through my draft of the sequel, BETWEEN A ROCK AND A HARD PLACE, that is coming out soon, he wasn’t happy with the prime scenes I allotted him. Those who know cats are aware that felines can be very stubborn when they want to be, so I came up with an idea to appease his pride. I helped Sneaky start his own blog called Sneaky the Library Cat’s blog: Scooping the Shelves of Cat “Litter” ature. This blog, transcribed by me, will feature Sneaky’s interviews of other cat characters (and occasionally a special guest dog or other animal). It will also include timely news and articles of interest to cats and their humans.

Sneaky has had a large response from cats seeking to appear on the blog, but he is still on the prowl for more guests. If you’re an author who has a cat in any of your books who would like to be featured on Sneaky’s blog, please send an email to sneakylibrarycat@gmail.com.

#LifeBooksWriting Blog Challenge: 5 Things about Me

takeoveraboutmeIf you’re reading this post, there’s a good chance you know a lot about me already; so when I attempted to meet the challenge of writing five things about myself, I decided to include facts that some people weren’t aware of but might find interesting.

  1. debbienewpicI chose to become a librarian after taking a college vocational test in my Sophomore year at college that showed my interests and skills to be best matched to a career in librarianship  and writing. I’ve worked as a librarian for 25 years and will be publishing my third novel this fall.
  2. I grew up with cats, have written about them in short stories, articles, and books and am a long-time member of a wonderful organization known as the Cat Writer’s Association. I currently have two male cats of my own – a striped, 7-year old tabby my daughter named Stripey and my mother’s 16-year old Siamese, Oliver, who I adopted three years ago. oliverstripey
  3. bonesAlthough I don’t watch a lot of television, I enjoy The Librarians, The Catch, and my favorite series, Bones, that I recently started watching on Netflix.
  4. hollybabyMy happiest experiences were my wedding day 25 years ago next July; the birth of my daughter who will be 12 this October; and the contract offer from Limitless Publishing I received for my novel, A STONE’S THROW, that was published last November and which will soon have a sequel.
  5. blackforestcake2My favorite dessert is Black Forest cake, and I love dark chocolate. My favorite snacks are unsalted peanuts out of the shell and sugarless gum.

Cobble Cove Mystery #2 Coming Soon . . .

betweenarockandahardplacesolsticecoverBETWEEN A ROCK AND A HARD PLACE is the sequel to A STONE’S THROW, the first Cobble Cove mystery. Although this book can be read as a standalone, some readers may prefer to read the first book for more background on the characters. If you like cozy mysteries that take place in a small town with quirky characters and several twists, you should enjoy both books. Between a Rock and a Hard Place will be released by Solstice Publishing this fall.

Warning: If you haven’t read A STONE’S THROW, the following preview to its sequel may contain spoilers.

Librarian Alicia McKinney has put the past behind her…

Two years ago, Alicia discovered both a terrible truth and lasting love with John McKinney in the small town of Cobble Cove, New York. Now a busy mother of twin babies and co-author of a mystery series, Alicia couldn’t be happier.

brhp-teaser-2Alicia’s contentment and safety are challenged…

Walking home alone from the library, Alicia senses someone following her, and on more than one occasion, she believes she is being watched. Does she have a stalker? When the local gift shop is burglarized, the troubling event causes unrest among Alicia and the residents of the quiet town.

John and Alicia receive an offer they can’t refuse…

When John’s sister offers to babysit while she and John take a much-needed vacation in New York City, Alicia is reluctant to leave her children because of the disturbances in Cobble Cove. John assures her the town is safe in the hands of Sheriff-elect Ramsay. Although Alicia’s experience with and dislike of the former Long Island detective don’t alleviate her concern, she and John take their trip.

Alicia faces her worst nightmare…

Secluded CabinThe McKinneys’ vacation is cut short when they learn their babies have been kidnapped and John’s sister shot. Alicia and John’s situation puts them between a rock and a hard place when the main suspect is found dead before the ransom is paid. In order to save their children, the McKinneys race against the clock to solve a mystery more puzzling than those found in their own books. Can they do it before time runs out?

From the Unconventional Bookshelf: Naked Hiking by Richard Foley

Although this is a departure from some of the books I regularly feature and I realize it may not be of interest to non-hikers, I know that every book has its audience, and it’s important for authors to reach those readers.  While this is a non-conventional title, I hope some of you might consider it if it is a topic you’d like to explore.

Naked Hiking by Richard Foley @richardfoleyrfi

Naked hiking is an exciting and healthy activity which can be enjoyed by nearly everybody, almost anywhere. Perhaps you’ve wondered whether you could do it too, and if so how, or where might you begin? Or maybe you are an experienced naked hiker already, and feel like stretching your wings a little further by reading about other people’s naked adventures in the great outdoors.

Many people may be surprised to discover that hiking naked in public spaces is fully legal and actively supported in many countries all around the world. It is also an activity which is practiced by a large number of people in many different locations, from gently meandering around sunny lake shores, to easy rambling across rolling countryside, to the very tops of rocky alpine peaks.

This book brings together some of the best writers on the subject, experts in their field, to share their intimate knowledge of naked hiking with you. Included are naked hiking reports, fully illustrated with pictures, from Nicole Wunram (author of “Nacktwandern”), Stephen Gough (the Naked Rambler), Olle Strand (author of “Sol, hälsa, glädje”), Richard Foley (author of “Active Nudists”), Stuart Pitsiligo (author of “Naturist, Red in Tooth and Claw”), and many others.

#LifeBooksWriting Blog Challenge: Profile of My Character

betweenarockandahardplacesolsticecover
Cover Image of BETWEEN A ROCK AND A HARD PLACE, releasing this fall.

While this blog post topic is a week late for the challenge because I was on vacation and very busy when I returned, I still wanted to write it to introduce one of my newest characters in my mystery BETWEEN A ROCK AND A HARD PLACE, the sequel to A STONE’S THROW.  I am busy working on edits for this book and hope it’s out in October or November.

Warning: If you haven’t read A STONE’S THROW yet, you might want to skip this post because it contains a spoiler from the ending.

kimpic
What Kim Pierce, college journalism major from the upcoming BETWEEN A ROCK AND A HARD PLACE, Cobble Cove Mystery #2, might look like

While many characters from A STONE’S THROW are still included in its sequel, there are also quite a few new characters as Cobble Cove expands. Two of the newer characters introduced in BETWEEN A ROCK AND A HARD PLACE are college students, Kim Pierce and Andy Phillips. The two young people are journalism interns who work for John at the Cobble Cove Courier. Kim also babysits for John and Alicia’s twins. I am profiling her for this challenge.

Kim is the second oldest in a large family. She wears her brown hair in a ponytail and dresses casually in sweaters and jeans. She and Andy, who work together on the newspaper, are dating. Their relationship becomes tested in the book when he is suspected and later accused of some of the crimes that take place in Cobble Cove during the holiday season. When Kim witnesses an event that touches John and Alicia, her older brother Carter comforts her in Andy’s place.

Here is an unedited scene from BETWEEN A ROCK AND A HARD PLACE, Cobble Cove Mystery #2 starring Kim:

The babysitter appeared at the nursery door. She was dressed in tight-fitting jeans, a pale fuzzy blue sweater that accented her light blue eyes. Her brown hair was tied back in a ponytail.

“Sorry that took so long,” she said not even out of breath having run up the stairs. Alicia envied the girl’s 20-year old body.

“Not to worry. I know how long doctors take. Sheila sent me home because she thinks I need more rest, but I feel fine. John was around earlier, but he’s gone to do some chores. Since you’re here, maybe I’ll take him up on his suggestion to go Christmas shopping or do something in town.”

Kim smiled. “Of course. You deserve to have time to yourself. I can watch the twins until four and then I have to get ready for my evening class.”

“I should be back way before then. How are your classes going this semester?”

Kim walked over to the cribs and looked down at the babies who were starting to fall asleep. In a low voice, she replied. “They’re good. Lots of work, but I enjoy it.”

“How much longer do you need to go before you earn your degree?”

Kim was by Carol’s crib, and she smiled as the baby opened her eyes again and regarded her with a gurgle. She reached down and tickled her.

“So sweet. Your babies are adorable, Alicia. One day, I hope to have cuties like these. But I want to start my career first. If I can afford the classes next year, I’ll be able to finish the following spring.”

Alicia knew college costs were high. “Are you taking out any loans?” When Alicia was at Long Island University, she’d earned some scholarships but she’d also borrowed money in her last year at library school. Luckily, she was able to pay her loan off shortly after she married her first husband.

“I’m not sure that’s a wise thing to do,” Kim said walking over to Johnny and watching as he followed his sister in waking up.

“I hate to have to pay back all that money with interest. I know I won’t earn much in the field I’m entering, especially in the beginning, and I can’t expect my parents to help much since I have three sisters and a brother at home.”

Alicia knew that both Kim and John’s other assistant, Andy, were from lower middle-class families. Kim came from a large family compared to today’s households and, although Andy only had a younger brother, his dad had died in a car accident a few years ago. His mother was struggling to make ends meet. She felt for the young people who were just starting out and was glad that John was paying them for their work on the paper and that she could offer Kim additional money for babysitting.

Author Spotlight Simon Maltman

authorspotlightWelcome to the Literary Library Lounge where I interview fellow authors. Today, I am chatting with  Simon Maltman from Belfast, Northern Ireland.simonmaltmanlimitlesslibrarylounge

Thanks for joining me, Simon.  Please take a seat and make yourself comfortable.
I understand you have a novel that is just being released by Solstice Publishing today. Can you give me some details about it?

chaserontherocks

A Chaser on the Rocks (releasing on 13th September) is my first full-length novel, being published by Solstice. I have had a number of short stories released over the last few years in various anthologies and magazines. I have also self-published a number of ebooks. On Amazon, my short Return Run was released a few months ago by Solstice.

Wonderful! Can you tell us a little bit more about your writiing?

I write crime fiction that is based in Northern Ireland. My debut novel is being released on 13th September. A Chaser on the Rocks is a mystery noir featuring Brian Caskey, a modern day PI with mental health problems. It is a ‘story within a story’ and also follows a character that Caskey has created who is also a PI, working in Belfast in the 1940’s, during the Belfast Blitz. I suppose it can be quite dark, but I try and inject a good dose of humour, something I think is second nature, hailing from Northern Ireland!

I plan my next release to be a collection of around twelve of my short stories.

Would you describe your goals as a writer to us?  What do you hope to achieve in the next few years? What are you planning to do to reach these goals?

My main objective was to find a publisher and I have been really happy with Solstice. I spend a lot of time trying to network and up to now trying to find people who would release my short stories or take on my novel. I now would like to put out another few novels in the next couple of years and hope to find a decent size readership. The dream would be to be able to do this full time.

Great goal. Mine is similar. I signed with Solstice this past August, and my mystery, BETWEEN A ROCK AND A HARD PLACE, should be out this fall. I am very happy with them so far.

What type of reader are you hoping to attract?  Who do you believe would be most interested in reading your books?

I think anyone with an interest in crime fiction would potentially enjoy my novel. It is very much in the tradition of a psychological mystery and the 1940’s part is heavily influenced by classic Film Noir. Through using the crime fiction genre I have also tried to tease out various themes, including the area of authorship and voice and I’ve tried to play with it a little bit.

I’m sure that would have wide appeal among crime fiction readers. It sounds very interesting.

What advice would you give other authors or those still trying to get published?

I would say to cast a wide net and to persevere. It can take a long time to get picked up and any feedback I think is valuable. I think when looking for contracts or reviews or anything like that, you just really have to dedicate the time and realize there will be lots of unanswered emails and plenty of rejections.

Yes, that’s very true. I agree that authors need to keep at it and that overnight successes are quite rare.

What particular challenges and struggles did you face before first becoming published?

I had the usual rejections and near misses, but it didn’t bother me too much. I recognized that it is all part of the path to getting published and I’m grateful for the ‘yes’s’ that I did get on the way to finding a publisher for my full-length novel. I don’t have an agent but was fortunate to get some interest early on from a high profile one and he was actually the reason I sat down and tried my hand at a full-length novel at all.

I’m also seeking an agent and had some positive responses from a few but am still looking. I think it’s great that you were inspired by one to start writing novels.

Have you taken any writing or publishing classes? If so, please provide information about them and if you feel they helped you further your professional skills.

I haven’t, but I would consider something certainly in the future if I found one that interested me in particular. I used to be part of a writers group who met up to discuss their work.

There are many online courses available today, many of them free. I took some that my library offered through Gale Courses, an online database. It got me back into writing after a brief period of taking time off. I also helped start a writer’s club at my library. In addition to being an author, I’m also a librarian and suggested that our patrons might be interested in a writing group.

What hobbies and interests do you have besides writing?

I love music and have always recorded and played in bands over the years. I have two kids now and certainly it’s easier to fit in writing than gigging and lots of rehearsals! I still love doing a bit of recording out in my garage. I also love movies, my favorites would be old Film Noir and a lot of foreign language films.

Sounds like you incorporated some of your interests into your writing which is great. It always lends authenticity to fiction when an author writes about something familiar to him or her.

What do you like most and least about being an author? What is your toughest challenge?

I think it’s all good really! It’s lovely to know that people have enjoyed things you have written and getting good reviews is a buzz. I think the necessity of marketing and promotion can get you down at times, particularly as it is an uphill struggle when there are so many books out there!

Absolutely. Most authors find promoting the toughest part of their work.

Can you please list your social media links, website, blog, etc. so readers can connect with you.

AUTHOR BIO:

It was a strange and twisting road that led to the publishing of my second novel.

Born and raised in Bristol, England. I spent my adult life in business, the majority of that time marketing cars. I eventually owned the largest Saab specialist in the world, before a divorce put an end to that part of my life.

This led me to leave Bristol to live halfway up a mountain in the Welsh valleys, start a part time six year English Literature course at Bristol University, and attend creative writing classes in Cardiff.

My interest in English literature flourished and I have won several prizes for my short stories. My first book, ‘Twenty Short Stories – Settling a score,” reached No 6 in the Short Stories Best Sellers and is still available. My second novel, a romantic thriller entitled Hand Over Fist was released earlier this year

Chasing What’s Already Gone evolved from a short story Carpe Diem in my second anthology Twenty One Short Stories. I could not get the two main characters out of my head and I had to find out what happened to them after the end of the short story.

I now live very happily halfway up that mountain in the Welsh Valleys with my wonderful partner, Mari, and our rescue dog, Wolfie.
