Review: A Medium’s Birthday Surprise: Becky Tibbs: A North Carolina Medium’s Mystery Series, Book 1 by Chariss K. Walker

***5-stars

The first of the Becky Tibbs: A North Carolina Medium’s cozy mystery series, this book introduces Medium Becky Tibbs, who on her 26th birthday, receives a vision from her boyfriend who died ten years ago on her 16th birthday. She needs to find out why Josh is so angry, why he’s chosen to visit her after all this time, and why he didn’t know he was dead. With the aid of a detective who once had a crush on her sister and her two siblings, Becky discovers who killed Josh and why. This helps him have closure and enter the light.

The best part of this book, in my opinion, was the relationship between Becky and her brother and sister who, also mediums, have chosen not to use their powers, although her brother begins to change his mind at the end of the story. I also liked the fact that Becky works in an antique shop, a perfect place to find ghosts. The setting in Asheville, North Carolina, is also interesting. This book has hooked me into checking out the others in the series. I recommend giving it a try.

Recipe, Spotlight, and Blog Tour for Southern Sass and a Battered Bride, A Marygene Brown Mystery, by Kate Young

Irish Soda Breakfast Bread

4 cups all-purpose flour, plus extra for dried fruit

5 tablespoons sugar

1 teaspoon baking soda

1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt

4 tablespoons (1/2 stick) cold unsalted butter, cut into 1/2-inch dice

1 3/4 cups cold buttermilk, shaken

1 large egg, lightly beaten

2 teaspoon grated orange zest

1 1/2 cups mixed dried fruit

1/2 cup chopped walnuts

Preheat oven to 375°F. Line a sheet pan with parchment paper.

Combine the flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment. Add the butter and mix on low speed until the butter is mixed into the flour.

With a fork, lightly beat the buttermilk, egg, and orange zest together in a measuring cup. With the mixer on low speed, slowly add the buttermilk mixture to the flour mixture. Combine the dried fruit and walnuts with 1 tablespoon of flour and mix into the dough. It will be very wet.

Dump the dough onto a well-floured board and knead it a few times into a round loaf. Place the loaf on the prepared sheet pan and lightly cut an X into the top of the bread with a serrated knife. Bake for 45 to 55 minutes, or until a cake tester comes out clean. When you tap the loaf, it will have a hollow sound.

Cool on baking rack. Serve warm or at room temp.

At a murder mystery–themed wedding reception on Georgia’s picturesque Peach Cove Island, the bride is doing an awfully good job playing dead . . .

Marygene Brown always figured she’d marry her childhood sweetheart, Alex Myers, not cater his wedding. But the Peach Diner could use the exposure. Most of the island is showing up—although more for the role-playing murder game at the reception than for the widely loathed bridezilla, Lucy Carmichael. Marygene may have to smile through the festivities, but Mama doesn’t have to hold her peace—especially since only Marygene can hear her mother’s ghost. Mama says she sees an aura of darkness around the wedding.

So when Marygene finds Lucy lying beside the wedding cake, buried in batter, with no pulse, it looks like Mama called it. This is no game. And when the bride’s body simply vanishes, it’s up to Marygene and her best friend Betsy (cousin to the groom and no fan of the bride) to solve a real-life mystery—with a little help from Mama’s sassy spirit . . .

Includes Seven Recipes from Marygene’s Kitchen!

Spotlight, Excerpt, and Blog Tour for Legally Blind Luck, A Braxton Campus Mystery, by James J. Cudney

Excerpt

Who is Queen Tessa?

In the mid-1600s, a beloved queen named Tessa ruled one of the chief tribes in the South African sub-continent. She’d been born blind but had become such a skilled negotiator and facilitator that she united several divisive clans during her early rule. While European settlers attempted to conquer the area, she led her tribe to victory for many years. Queen Tessa had a talisman she claimed the gods had bequeathed to her when she’d gone on a spiritual walk through the coastal mountains. She fastidiously wore the twelve-inch figurine around her neck, and according to legend, a golden nectar inside a hidden chamber protected them from the ruthless invaders. One day, Queen Tessa left on a mystical journey to ask the gods for assistance to defend her people from the new weapons being used to hunt them. During the walk, she was kidnapped by a group of mercenaries who’d banded together to conquer Tessa’s tribe. They savagely beat and burned her body. Before killing the treasured queen, the vandals drained her blood and replaced the nectar in her talisman with some of it. The governor of the largest colony, who’d been the mastermind behind the plot, sent the talisman back to Tessa’s tribe with a message that they had lost the war and it was time to surrender.

The man’s eyes ignited like firecrackers when he regaled us with the story, as if he believed in its magical history like children did Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny. “Queen Tessa told her daughters that this would happen one day. She could often predict the future, a gift the gods had bestowed upon her with the original talisman. Knowing minimal opportunity persisted to protect her people, Tessa placed a dark curse on the figurine before the colonists killed her.”

“Got it… so what exactly is this curse?” I asked, all ten toes curling with trepidation.

Someone has discovered a cursed talisman, and a rogue government agent will stop at nothing to retrieve the heirloom. Unfortunately, it has already changed hands and found its way on campus. Moments before Braxton’s controversial art exhibition opens, Kellan stumbles upon another murder victim, and it appears he might be next on the avenger’s list.

Can Kellan protect the talisman’s true heir and prevent the killer’s nefarious plan? Given all the suspects have ties to prominent Braxton citizens, he’s uncertain whom to trust. Together, Kellan and Sheriff April are determined to solve the mystery – via legal means or blind luck.

About James J. Cudney

Background

James is my given name, but most folks call me Jay. I live in New York City, grew up on Long Island, and graduated from Moravian College, an historic but small liberal arts school in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, with a degree in English literature and minors in Education, Business and Spanish. After college, I accepted a technical writing position for a telecommunications company during Y2K and spent the last ~20 years building a career in technology & business operations in the retail, sports, media, hospitality, and entertainment industries. Throughout those years, I wrote short stories, poems, and various beginnings to the “Great American Novel,” but I was so focused on my career that writing became a hobby. In 2016, I committed to focusing my energies toward reinvigorating a second career in reading, writing, and publishing.

Author

Writing has been a part of my life as much as my heart, mind, and body. At some points, it was just a few poems or short stories; at others, it was full length novels and stories. My current focus is family drama fiction, cozy mystery novels, and suspense thrillers. I conjure characters and plots that I feel must be unwound. I think of situations people find themselves in and feel compelled to tell the story. It’s usually a convoluted plot with many surprise twists and turns. I feel it necessary to take that ride all over the course. My character is easily pictured in my head. I know what he is going to encounter or what she will feel. But I need to use the right words to make it clear.

Reader & Reviewer

Reading has also never left my side. Whether it was children’s books, young adult novels, college textbooks, biographies, or my ultimate love, fiction, it’s ever present in my day. I read two books per week and I’m on a quest to update every book I’ve ever read on Goodreads, write up a review, and post it on all my sites and platforms.

Blogger & Thinker

I have combined my passions into a single platform where I share reviews, write a blog and publish tons of content: TRUTH. I started my 365 Daily Challenge, where I post about a word that has some meaning to me and converse with everyone about life. There is humor, tears, love, friendship, advice, and bloopers. Lots of bloopers where I poke fun at myself all the time. Even my dogs have had weekly segments called “Ryder’s Rants” or “Baxter’s Barks,” where they complain about me. All these things make up who I am; none of them are very fancy or magnanimous, but they are real. And that’s why they are me.

Genealogist & Researcher

I love history and research, finding myself often reaching back into the past to understand why someone made the choice he or she did and what were the subsequent consequences. I enjoy studying the activities and culture from hundreds of years ago to trace the roots and find the puzzle of my own history. I wish I could watch my ancestors from a secret place to learn how they interacted with others, and maybe I’ll comprehend why I do things the way I do.

Spotlight of Tracey Drew, Author of Knitted and Knifed, the first Knitty Kitties Mystery

Please welcome Tracey Alvarez writing as Tracey Drew who is here from New Zealand to talk about her new release.

Hi, Tracey. Great to have you with us. How long have you been published? What titles and/or series have you published and with which publisher? Have you self-published any titles? Please give details.

I self-published my first contemporary romance in December 2013. Since then I have self-published 20+ other romance titles, become a USA Today bestselling author with one of my titles reaching the USA Today list, and I’m now working on a series of cozy mysteries.

Wow! That’s incredible. Congratulations! Tell us a little bit about your books.

I’m currently writing the fourth Knitty Kitties Mystery, with book 3 HANKS & A HITMAN that released on April 19th.

Love the title of your series. I’m partial to kitties, as I feature them in most of my books including my Cobble Cove cozy mysteries.

Describe your goals as a writer. What do you hope to achieve in the next few years? What are you planning to do to reach these goals?

I’d like to write a lot more Knitty Kitties Mysteries, they’re so much fun!

Cozies are enjoyable to write. I’m hoping to continue the Cobble Cove series, too, and also start another.

What type of reader are you hoping to attract?  Who do you believe would be most interested in reading your books?

A reader with a sense of humor and one who loves cats, yarn, and a tricksy mystery to solve.

I’m sure that will be a wide audience.

What advice would you give other authors or those still trying to get published?

I’m personally a big proponent of publishing independently—once you’ve done your dues learning to write gripping stories, characters who jump off the page, and developed a voice that readers can’t get enough of, write the books you love. There is an abundance of advice and support online for indie authors, but also plenty if you want to go through traditional channels.

Good advice.

What particular challenges and struggles did you face before first becoming published?

Self doubt. And it doesn’t go away once your first, or even tenth, book is published. You have to take that leap of faith and keep pushing forward.

That’s so true.

Do you belong to any writing groups? Which ones?

I belong to the Romance Writers of New Zealand, who are very supportive to members who write genres other than romance.

Very Nice.

What are your hobbies and interests besides writing?

Knitting and crochet, cats, reading, road trips with my car-loving husband.

Those sound like great hobbies. I used to enjoy crocheting, and I love spending time with my cats and my daughter and husband, too.

What do you like most and least about being an author? What is your toughest challenge?

There are many awesome things about being an author—working from home with my two cats snoozing close by, making up stories about imaginary people, the sense of satisfaction from completing another book that I’m proud of. The not-so-good—marketing and promotion, administration, deadlines. The toughest challenge for me is the regular battle with writer’s block and the stress that goes with it.

I’m lucky that I don’t suffer writer’s block, but I agree with you about the challenges of marketing and promotion.

What do you like about writing cozy mysteries?

I love delving into a character’s motivation and backstory, and hiding clues from my readers in plain sight.

I can understand why you like that.

Can you share a short excerpt from your latest title or upcoming release?

Excerpt from Knitted & Knifed.

Around us, people had begun to notice Officer Austin’s marked police vehicle parked outside the store. A few bolder locals wandered over to ask what was going on. I kept my gaze locked onto my phone screen, feigning sudden interest in social media posts of funny cat memes and updates on the mundane things people did on a beautiful summer’s morning.

One of Sean’s talents was people skills, which he successfully employed to evade any direct questions about what was going on inside. As the youngest, he’d learned from his older siblings how to circumvent Mum and Dad’s rules and the consequences of breaking them: with charm and misdirection.

However, by the time two more police cars cruised down Cape Street toward us, even Sean’s cheeky banter couldn’t keep the curious onlookers at bay. Quite a few people now milled around outside the store, and the lead vehicle had to double-park next to a ute and order its driver to move along. As uniformed officers poured onto the sidewalk and immediately began issuing instructions, I caught a glimpse of one man in the second car. He remained in place until the crowd had been ushered aside.

Then, and only then, did he unfold his sizable bulk from the car. And by bulk, I mean six foot something of broad-shouldered, rugby-player-thighed, hands-that-could-crush-a-fistful-of-unshelled-walnuts big. He cut an imposing figure in his charcoal-colored suit, totally out of place in this small seaside town where tidy-casual was considered business attire.

With precision-cut black hair, dark shades, and what might have been a sexy mouth if it wasn’t curved downward in a scowl, he strode toward us, his long legs eating up the sidewalk. I didn’t need to see behind those shades to know he was sizing up my brother and me because he immediately struck me as a size ’em up kind of guy.

He stopped in front of us, arms folded across his chest. “Good morning. I’m Detective Sergeant Mana.”

His voice was as deep as a gravel pit and equally as abrasive.

“Hey,” Sean said.

I kept my lips zipped. Did he expect a polite greeting in return or an impressed gasp in recognition of his authority?

His gaze slowly swept from Sean’s face to mine. “Tell me. Which one of you brought a cat to a crime scene?”

Excellent excerpt. Thanks for sharing.

Is there anything else you’d like our readers to know about you or your books?

My books are set in a fictional town in a very real and beautiful region of New Zealand, the Hawke’s Bay. As a New Zealander, I love introducing my readers to our stunning country.

Setting is very important to readers.

Thanks for the great interview. I’m sharing your blog tour and giveaway below. Best wishes on your new release and forthcoming books.

Wanted: Cat mum to manage a yarn store, corral two curious cats, all the while being tangled up in murderous mayhem and mystery.

A smart woman would dump her cheating ex, move from the city, and give herself a chance for a well-deserved do-over. A smarter woman—smarter than me, anyway—wouldn’t jump out of that same frying pan and return to Cape Discovery, a seaside village where her family is the nuttiest of all the nut-ball residents.

I’m a former high school counselor, middle-child peacemaker, and current curator of lots of squishy/fuzzy goodness at my granddad’s little yarn store. Temporary assistant. Until I decide what to do with the rest my life. There’s only one knotty problem to untangle first. The knife sticking out of the most unpopular man in town, and the police detective trying to pin the murder on the donkey—otherwise known as my younger brother. With a pair mischievous cats determined to be underfoot and a craft group of Serial Knitters and Happy Hookers wanting the inside scoop, a girl could lose her mind. And if the killer has their way, maybe even my life…

Tessa Wakefield has her hands full juggling a cozy craft store, her crazy family, and two men who’d rather poke out their eyes than describe themselves as cute. Which they totally are. Cute, charismatic, and occasionally on her mind when she’s not stumbling over dead bodies and using her newfound sleuthing skills to track down murderers. Lucky she’s an excellent multi-tasker because digging beneath Cape Discovery’s surface can unearth secrets that kill.

About Tracey Drew

Tracey Drew lives Down Under with her husband—who’s given up complaining about her yarn addiction–and two madcap tabby cats called Kevin and Alfie. The feline brothers constantly battle with her while she’s trying to write her books by demanding lap-time, but they also provide constant inspiration for her fun & quirky cozy mysteries.

Review of Behind Closed Doors, the New Mystery Anthology in the Red Penguin Collection

*****5 stars

The Red Penguin Collection of anthologies feature short stories of various genres. Their latest, a mystery collection called BEHIND CLOSED DOORS, includes wonderful offerings by 15 talented authors. Although I haven’t read all the stories, my favorites so far are “Last Lap” by Diane Kane (what a twist); “The Time of His LIfe” by William John Rostron (a story every bored young person should read); and, no bias here, my story, “The Return of the Arch Villain,” about a St. Louis cop who reopens the cold case of his wife’s murder before he retires. This is a great collection of mysteries of all types and one any mystery reader won’t want to miss.

Ever wonder what cats are thinking? If your cats could write a blog, what would they talk about? In this collection, you’ll meet Debbie De Louise’s current cats and two from the past who share their everyday activities, health concerns, behavior issues, and more. Floppy relates his hospital experience, gives advice about taking pills, and discusses feline diabetes. His sister, Holly, talks about her weight issues, describes how she made the change from a feral to a house cat, and even writes a fictional story featuring her fur and human family members.

Harry talks about the merits and perils of being a black cat, shares his bad habit of wire and shoelace chewing, and even gives tips about how to cope with a crisis. His sister Hermione reveals her fascination with high and low places, discusses how she mastered the cat flap door, and even reviews the Cat Writers’ Association conference. If there’s a feline in your home or you enjoy reading about these quirky, beautiful, wise, and inspirational creatures, you’ll find these fur-st person tails from the cats’ point of view a purrfect read.

Plausibility and Feedback

One of the major issues faced by novelists, and particularly mystery writers, is plausibility. Everything in your story from your characters, to your dialogue, to the technical details of the plot must be plausible. In my mind, this is one of the most important reasons to join writing groups and critique groups. Other readers’ reactions can immediately tell you whether or not a scene or a character is plausible. Like Jiminy Cricket, readers can tell when you are telling selling wild improbable tales.

When you have the privilege of reading your material to the members of a writing group, one of the common things they will say is, “I don’t get it. Why is she doing this? Why did he say that?” This is the point where most authors, even experienced writers, get their backs up. A given scene, or piece of dialogue invariably seems credible to the person who wrote it, so it’s natural to feel defensive, but try to consider the speaker’s point of view. One of the rules for writing groups that works well is to prevent the author from commenting on his/her work until all the members of the group have had their say. Then the author can react. This pause gives the writer time to remember-feedback is always helpful.

I recently read part of a chapter from “The Blind Split” to my writing group. In the reading, my detective, Wayne Nichols, is entering a deserted house in the dark. Because the mafia has been suspected of abducting a woman and child, he is armed. The members of my writing group are mostly older, well-educated white women. One of them said she hated guns and didn’t want to hear anything about weapons in the story. I had to clamp my hand over my mouth to keep from saying, “For goodness sakes, the Detective is in law enforcement! Of course he has a gun.” However, when I re-wrote the chapter I removed some of the description of the type of weapon and simply said he had come armed.

Perhaps the most important way of achieving plausibility in your story is doing your research. There are two ways of doing this. One way is to have someone you can consult who is an expert in the field. I am fortunate to have an emergency room physician in my family and he is the person I always consult on medical details. In addition to his broad knowledge of medicine, he has made a sub-specialty of testifying as an expert witness. I have another person in my extended family, who is a police officer. Early in his career, he was a narc and so is able to help with confidential informants, drug usage and jurisdiction, just to name a few issues. One of my dearest friends is a clinical psychologist and has been enormously helpful with such issues as sibling rivalry, grief, and abuse.

The second way of doing your research is by reading or consulting the internet. The Net is the quickest way to find information, but you have to be careful. Some of the stuff on the Net is just plain wrong! I like Wikipedia, although I am careful to consult other sources about a given topic because anyone can contribute to articles on Wikipedia. I also like government sites. These were especially helpful in writing “The Blind Split.” The book takes place in 2020 and I felt it was unethical not to deal with the pandemic. The State Health Department sites were terrific sources of data.

Bottom line: if you are writing a novel of a mystery, keep in mind that it is NOT a Memoir. Your own experiences are not enough. Don’t hide your head in the sand! Remember what Grandma said, “You have two ears and only one mouth,” so listen more than talk, do your research, and keep writing!

Their first client, Cara Summerfield, comes with what appears to be a missing person’s case. Cara got pregnant in high school and baby Danny was adopted. Her husband, Grant, an up-and-coming politician has never been told about the pregnancy. Their only clue is an unreadable return address on a letter sent to Cara from Danny’s girlfriend. Danny is now a racehorse trainer and has been assaulted for non-payment of gambling debts. Cara charges Rosedale Investigations to find Danny and keep his existence completely confidential. When Danny is found, he’s in the ICU and not expected to live. When he passes away, it appears to the pathologist to be natural causes, but Detective Nichols doesn’t buy it.
