August Author News: Events, Books, and Cats

This may be slightly early, but it’s only because I have a lot of news to share with you all. Including several events coming up this week.

On Wednesday, July 29 at 12 noon, I’ll be appearing on the Crimeless Cat on Facebook talking about my cats, cat books, and more. If you can’t make it, the video will remain up on that page to be viewed later.

On Friday, July 31, at 1 p.m., I’ll be participating in an author takeover on the Cozy Mystery Village where I’ll be sharing information about my Cobble Cove cozy mystery books and stories and also hosting a giveaway.

On Wednesday, August 5, I’ll be appearing on Stephanie Larkin’s Between the Covers TV show at 7 p.m. EST.

Adorable graphic courtesty of the Cat Writers’ Association

On Saturday, August 8, I’ll be attending the Cat Writers’ Association’s virtual awards ceremony where I and fellow members will learn if we’ve won muse medallions or other awards for our contest entries. I’ve already received three certificates of excellence for them. There will also be raffle prizes and special guest presenters. Everyone is welcome to attend. The event page for this pawsome event is here: https://www.facebook.com/events/310318276778464/

Also, in August, I will be self publishing a non-fiction book called Pet Posts: The Cat Chats that include blog posts and articles “written” by my current cats and those from twenty years ago. The posts will include feline health, behavior, and humorous articles. I don’t have a cover to share yet, but here’s a teaser featuring the 4 cat “authors” of the book.

Last but not least, my new release, Memory Makers, will be on blog tour with Silver Dagger Book Tours from August 21 to September 21. It will feature a great giveaway. More details will follow.

I hope you’ll be able to attend, view, or participate in my July and August events and look for the publication of my forthcoming cat book.

A whip smart librarian’s fresh start comes with a tart twist in this perfect cocktail of murder and mystery—with a romance chaser.

MURDER ON TAP

With Chicago winters in the rearview mirror, Chloe Jackson is making good on a promise: help her late friend’s grandmother run the Sea Glass Saloon in the Florida Panhandle. To Chloe’s surprise, feisty Vivi Slidell isn’t the frail retiree Chloe expects. Nor is Emerald Cove. It’s less a sleepy fishing village than a panhandle hotspot overrun with land developers and tourists. But it’s a Sea Glass regular who’s mysteriously crossed the cranky Vivi. When their bitter argument comes to a head and he’s found dead behind the bar, guess who’s the number one suspect?

In trying to clear Vivi’s name, Chloe discovers the old woman isn’t the only one in Emerald Cove with secrets. Under the laidback attitude, sparkling white beaches, and small town ways something terrible is brewing. And the sure way a killer can keep those secrets bottled up is to finish off one murder with a double shot: aimed at Chloe and Vivi.

New Release: Memory Makers, A Medical Mystery by Debbie De Louise

I’m excited to announce the release of my new novel, Memory Makers.(link: http://mybook.to/memorymakers) This book is currently available as an eBook and free on Kindle Unlimited. It’s also in paperback and other editions will be forthcoming.

Twenty-five years ago, Lauren Phelps and her sister Patty were kidnapped from their backyard on Long Island. Lauren escaped her captor, but Patty was killed.

Ever since, Lauren has suffered from nightmares of the “Shadow Man.” Trying to recall his face and avenge her sister’s murder, Lauren, now a kidnapping investigator, enrolls in a clinical trial for a new memory drug.

At the offices of Memory Makers in California, she receives the injections of the Memory Makers’ serum, and begins to experience flashbacks of repressed memories. Along with the flashbacks, she receives threats from an anonymous source that point back to her childhood trauma.

Soon, Lauren becomes involved with a fellow trial participant who seeks to recall his own traumatic past. But can Lauren discover the identity of the “Shadow Man” before history repeats itself?

EXCERPT

I leaned back, closed my eyes against the blaring lights of the jail cell-sized room and tried to answer Dr. Murray’s questions about that summer day twenty-five years ago. Concentrating on the images that flickered in my mind, I saw my five-year-old sister and me in a sandbox, a faceless man entering our backyard gate.

“Don’t think too hard, Lauren. Let the memories come.” The doctor’s voice persisted, a mantra in my head.

I struggled to summon up the rest of the scene.  “Patty and I are in our sandbox and there’s a man, but . . . I’m sorry, Dr. Murray. I can’t see his face.” I opened my eyes. My heart was pounding, the same reaction I had each night after my dreams of the “Shadow Man” that had haunted me since childhood.

Review and Blog Tour for Larceny At the Library, A Washington Whodunit, by Colleen J. Shogan

***5-stars

As a librarian and a pet lover, there were two things I liked most about this book — the setting (the murder takes place in the Library of Congress) and the dog (Clarence). The mystery and human characters were top-notch, too. The plot was equally absorbing as we join amateur sleuth Kit Marshall on her fifth adventure where she attempts to solve the murder of Gustav Gaffney, the Assistant Librarian of Congress, who was found dead the morning after the preview of a special exhibit containing the contents of Abraham Lincoln’s pockets on the night of his murder at Ford Theater. Gaffney’s killer is suspected of having also stolen some of the objects from this exhibit, but Kit has another theory and sets out to prove it.

I loved the way Shogan describes the Library of Congress and other D.C. buildings. It was almost like taking a tour of Washington. I was also surprised by the twist at the end. I highly recommend this fun cozy mystery.

(Free July 18 -22)

Between a Rock and a Hard Place

Librarian Alicia McKinney has put the past behind her…

Two years ago, Alicia discovered both a terrible truth and lasting love with John McKinney in the small town of Cobble Cove, New York. Now a busy mother of twin babies and co-author of a mystery series, Alicia couldn’t be happier.

Alicia’s contentment and safety are challenged…

Walking home alone from the library, Alicia senses someone following her, and on more than one occasion, she believes she is being watched. Does she have a stalker? When the local gift shop is burglarized, the troubling event causes unrest among Alicia and the residents of the quiet town.

John and Alicia receive an offer they can’t refuse…

When John’s sister offers to babysit while she and John take a much-needed vacation in New York City, Alicia is reluctant to leave her children because of the disturbances in Cobble Cove. John assures her the town is safe in the hands of Sheriff-elect Ramsay. Although Alicia’s experience with and dislike of the former Long Island detective don’t alleviate her concern, she and John take their trip.

Alicia faces her worst nightmare…

The McKinneys’ vacation is cut short when they learn their babies have been kidnapped and John’s sister shot. Alicia and John’s situation puts them between a rock and a hard place when the main suspect is found dead before the ransom is paid. In order to save their children, the McKinneys race against the clock to solve a mystery more puzzling than those found in their own books. Can they do it before time runs out?

Sneaky’s Christmas Mystery

Mid-July Author News: 4 New Books Coming Soon

Hi, Readers. How are you all doing? I’ve been keeping busy with four book projects that I hope will be published this year. Two have already been accepted. I’m also back at work at the library, and we will begin admitting patrons again soon with some special rules regarding mask wearing and social distance. Have your libraries reopened yet? Are they taking safety measures?

I had a great time at the Cozy Mystery Village Facebook Group’s 1000-member celebration and gave away three of my eBooks to the winners of the contest I posted. I gave the winners a choice of which book they’d like to read, and they all chose A Stone’s Throw, the first book of my Cobble Cove mystery series.  This series currently consists of four books and two short stories. The short stories, Celebrating Christmas with my Characters and Sneaky’s Christmas Mystery are both available as eBooks and, like all my books, are free on Kindle Unlimited. I’ve recently submitted a third story, Sneaky’s Summer Mystery that I hope will be out this summer.

For fans of my standalone mysteries and those who enjoy more traditional mysteries with some cozy elements thrown in, my medical mystery, Memory Makers, is in the layout stage by my publisher, and I will share the cover as soon as I have it. This book features Lauren Phelps, a young woman who volunteers for a clinical trial of a new memory drug in the hope of recalling the face of the man who killed her sister twenty-five years ago. My real-life cats, Harry and Hermione, play a role in one of the subplots of this book.

For a change, I’ve also decided to self publish a non-fiction cat book. This book, Pet Posts: The Cat Chats, will contain the blog posts that Harry and Hermione wrote for the Kitty Korner column of Sneaky the Library Cat’s blog. It will also feature articles that were posted twenty years ago by two of my previous cats on a website known as Themestream that is no longer online. These illustrated cat posts, told in the points-of-view of my current and past cats, will cover feline health and behavioral topics as well as other issues.

I’m still querying the first book of my new Buttercup Bend cozy series, “The Case of the Cat Crazy Lady” to agents. If you’re an author who writes cozies and can recommend any agents who might be interested in the first book of a new pet-related cozy series, please let me know.

Recipe and Spotlight for Vangie Vale and the Larcenous Lava Cake, A Matchbaker Mystery by R. L. Syme

The core of the Matchbaker Series is that Vangie picks the “right” pastry for each person, based on who they are, what they like, and tries to match to them. Edward, an old friend of Vangie’s, is the Lava Cake in this book. And he has one recipe… she has another!

EDWARD’S ORIGINAL RECIPE

1 stick butter

8 oz. semi-sweet chocolate

1 tablespoon instant coffee

10 oz. confectioner’s sugar

2 eggs & 3 yolks

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

4 oz. flour

Confectioner’s sugar for dusting

VANGIE’S ADAPTED RECIPE

1 stick butter

8 oz. bittersweet chocolate (60% Scharffen Berger brand preferred)

10 oz. confectioner’s sugar

2 eggs & 3 yolks

1 teaspoon almond extract

1 teaspoon maraschino cherry juice

4 oz. flour

Ice cream for serving

You can make the batter ahead of time and chill in the refrigerator until time to make, but you’ll want to bake these right before serving in order to get the molten center.

They bake the best in 6 oz. porcelain ramekins. I would butter them and then tap flour around on the insides, making sure to tap the ramekin upside-down to get out all of the excess flour. (Edward taught me to spray the cups with cooking spray, but I found they don’t come out quite as well.) Also, I would get some good, grippy tongs for removal, unless you have tight oven mitt gloves that allow you to grip the hot porcelain when it comes out. (Edward taught me to rubber-band paper towels onto the ends of the tongs, but I prefer to use my grippy oven mitt gloves. To each her own…)

Preheat the oven to 450 (Edward does 425 and bakes for 13 minutes, but I’m at 6000 feet in elevation and I had to up the heat and reduce the minutes, just a touch… if you’re at sea-level, I would do 425 for 13, though). Place your ramekins on a baking sheet, prepped and ready to bake.

Microwave the butter and chocolate together for about a minute, until the butter is soft. Then I would whisk them together (here is where you’d add the coffee granules if you were doing Edward’s version) until they’re incorporated.

Then you’ll want to whisk in the powdered sugar, and it will be a thicker, almost cake-y consistency. I typically let this sit for a minute or two before I add the eggs, just to make sure it’s not too hot.

Make sure to crack the eggs into a separate bowl so you’re not getting any bad eggs or shells into the expensive (if you’re using the right kind of) chocolate mixture. Whisk in the eggs, egg yolks, extract of choice (clearly, I prefer almond/cherry… Edward liked vanilla/coffee… but that’s his taste), and the cherry juice if you’re using it. Once all that is incorporated, stir in the flour slowly and the mixture is ready for the ramekins. If you’ve got four 6 oz. ramekins, the mixture can divide evenly among them (it puffs up a bit like souffle, but won’t rise like that, and it shouldn’t spill over the edges).

Bake at 425 for 14 minutes or at 450 for 12 minutes (again, remember my elevation issues). The first time you make these, you’ll want to test them for your elevation and oven. Everyone’s is a bit different. So it might take you one or two batches to really get it figured out—but it’s an excuse to make great desserts, in my opinion.

Again, a quick reminder: you’ll want to serve these warm. Put an individual plate on top of the individual ramekin and turn it over so the cake slides out of the ramekin. Be careful to do this over an easy-to-clean surface the first time you try it, because if the top of the cake sticks, the molten center will come out all over your plate and counter. It takes some practice to get this one right… I did three or four of them before I got it quite right. But eating the mistakes is half the fun of baking.

Edward would always powder-dust his with powdered sugar, but I prefer mine dark and with vanilla ice cream on the side, and a maraschino cherry on top. Obviously, I prefer mine my way, but I included them both so you could choose. I’d never presume to be able to guess which you’d like better, so why not have both options?

Hope you enjoy!
