This week, I will be talking about my recent book., “A Stone’s Throw.” that was published in November 2015 by Limitless Publishing. I am working on the sequel, “Between a Rock and a Hard Place” (2nd in the Cobble Cove Mysteries) series that will be released soon.

Below is the blurb, an excerpt, the book trailer, and some reviews of “A Stone’s Throw.” I am also including the purchase links for the book along with my social media links and Amazon and Goodreads Author Pages as well as my website/blog and newsletter sign-up link.

Widowed librarian Alicia Fairmont needs answers…

After her husband is killed in a hit and run accident, Alicia travels upstate to his hometown of Cobble Cove, New York, hoping to locate his estranged family and shed light on his mysterious past. Anticipating staying only a weekend, her visit is extended when she accepts a job at the town’s library.

Secrets stretch decades into the past…

Assisted by handsome newspaper publisher and aspiring novelist, John McKinney, Alicia discovers a connection between her absent in-laws and a secret John’s father has kept for over sixty years. But her investigation is interrupted when she receives word her house has burned and arson is suspected, sending her rushing back to Long Island, accompanied by John.

Back in Cobble Cove, cryptic clues are uncovered…

When Alicia returns, she finds a strange diary, confiscated letters, and a digital audio device containing a recording made the day her husband was killed. Anonymous notes warn Alicia to leave town, but she can’t turn her back on the mystery—or her attraction to John.

As the pieces begin to fall into place, evidence points to John’s involvement in her husband’s accident. The past and present threaten to collide, and Alicia confronts her fears…

Has she fallen in love with her husband’s killer?

EXCERPT

“Who is the other visitor?” Alicia was curious about the sleeping guest.

“Oh, John,” Dora chuckled. “He’s not a visitor. He lives up the road, but he stays here occasionally. I think it’s just to keep me company, but he says the atmosphere inspires his writing. He also does some chores for me.”

“He’s an author?”

Dora chose a cinnamon bun and spread some butter on it. “He’s actually our town’s newspaper publisher. He also keeps the town’s records, but he’s working on a book, too. He stays busy. I guess it helps him recover.”

This was interesting. If this guy John kept the town records, maybe he could track down Pete’s sister and mother. But what was he recovering from? Alicia was hesitant to ask. Maybe the man was in rehab for alcohol or drug addiction, or perhaps he had cancer or been in an accident.

“Talking about me again, Dora?” They hadn’t even heard him in the doorway. The man who stood there did not look drunk, sick, or injured. He was tall, even taller than Pete which would probably make him about six feet. He was thin but muscular, and he didn’t look like he spent a lot of time working at a computer. His hair was dark and thick with only a few strands of gray. He was clean shaven with deep blue eyes she noticed immediately.

“Ah, good morning, John. You’ve awoken before the rooster crows.” Dora got up. “I have some cleaning to do upstairs. Why don’t you come and meet your fellow guest, Alicia?”

John bent forward as if to bow. “Pleased to meet you, ma’am.” He  extended his hand. “John McKinney at your service.”

McKinney? “Are you a related to Mr. McKinney at the library?”

John smiled as Dora made her exit, muffin in hand. He sat in the chair she left. “He’s my dad.”

ABOUT THE AUTHOR — Sarah Marsh

Hello there, you’d think that writing the “about” info on myself would be the easy part of this exercise but wow. Not so much. I’ve only been writing stories for the last couple of years, I’ve been a huge fan of science fiction and romance novels for a long time and one day my over active imagination just wouldn’t seem to quit so I got on the computer, started typing and eventually ended up with my first book! It’s an odd career turn for me as I also currently work in an office in an accounting capacity, but I’ve also been a pastry chef as well so perhaps this is a little closer to getting back to the creative outlet that I’ve been missing. It’s great to be able to put little pieces of yourself into these heroines that you perhaps don’t get to show the world or even wish you were more like, its a liberating experience. At the same time, writing is such a personal thing that putting yourself out there to the world to be judged by publishers, reviewers, readers, basically everyone that reads your work is a really scary thing for a lot of people. It was a terrifying thing for me and I am grateful that I have some very supportive family and friends, thank you most of all to Marissa who has always been there right from the start no matter what I put in front of her to read!

I currently live in British Columbia, I’m a bit of a hobby-a-holic. At the moment I am obsessed with scarf knitting, to the point that I had to open my own Etsy store to unload my stock pile of scarfs….I mean how many scarfs can a girl really justify keeping for herself? I also am a painter, mostly abstract in acrylics. With the pastry arts background I spend a decent amount of time still creating recipes and baking, much to the delight of my co-workers who I use as lab taste testers, I love making home made chocolates as well. In the spring and summer I love to plant things and tinker in the garden, and spending time with friends and family.

I hope you enjoy my books! I certainly enjoy writing them and I strive to get better with each one, thank you for your support!

DeLouise TeaserExcerpt from The Seashell and the Stone by Debbie De Louise (c) 2016 Debbie De Louise

As Virginia and Stephen made their way toward the end of the boardwalk, the merry-go-round music that drifted along their path changed to a loud cacophony of whistles and horn blasts announcing “the greatest show on earth.” A man on stilts came hobbling toward them, his wide yellow polka-dotted pants flapping in the breeze off the ocean. “Good day, Ma’am. Good day, Sir,” he greeted them. “Right this way to the midway.” He chuckled at his use of words.

Up ahead, Virginia spotted the circus tents lined on the beach and the acrobatic high-wire strung high across two tall poles.

“I guess you need to find the person in charge to ask about selling here.”

Mr. Granger was scanning the crowd seated on folding chairs by the first tent where a magician was performing some tricks to the rapt audience. “Let’s look around first. Would you like to sit and watch the show?”

Virginia was pleased that he seemed more interested in her company than the business that brought him there. “No, but I would enjoy going there.” She pointed toward a tent that displayed the sign, “Madame Marie, Fortune Teller.”

“Are you serious? You know these carnival mystics are not worth the money.”

Virginia felt her anger flare again as it had when he had criticized her for feeding Seashell table scraps. “It’s my money to spend and that’s how I wish to spend it.” Her father had given her a $1 note as well as a few silver coins for carnival expenses.

“Very well.” Mr. Granger followed her reluctantly toward Madame Marie’s tent. The psychic sat behind a round table covered in red velvet. She wore a matching red kerchief in her long dark curly hair. Several rings graced her hands as she sat turning over tarot cards and gazing into a crystal ball. At their approach, she lay down the cards and beckoned them with a smile missing several teeth. Virginia could smell the lady’s foul breath, onions mixed with garlic. She lay down one of her coins, but the woman pushed it away. “For you, I will tell a fortune for free. Please have a seat.”

Mr. Granger stood waiting by the side of the tent as Virginia took the chair opposite Marie. “Why are you not charging me?”

Marie shuffled the cards and placed them face down in a pile. “Direct your energy on the cards and then choose one,” the woman instructed ignoring Virginia’s question.

Virginia followed her directions while Mr. Granger stood with a bored look on his face shuffling from foot to foot.

“Ah,” Marie said as she turned over the card Virginia picked to reveal a man and woman with an angel above them. “The Lovers. How appropriate.”

“Does it mean I’ll be wed soon?” Virginia asked.

“Yes, my dear. There is a special gentleman in your life or will be soon.” She placed the card at the bottom of the deck and tapped the glass ball in front of her. “If you’d like to know more or ask a question, it will be 1 greenback, please.”

“Wait one moment,” Mr. Granger interrupted. “You told the lady your predictions were free.”

The psychic smiled showing her missing teeth again. “The tarot reading is free. There’s a charge for the crystal ball.”

“I guess you have to make money somehow. Come on, Miss Vance, let us move on.”

“Wait.” Virginia did not like being ordered around, and she was curious as to what Madame Marie would see in her crystal ball. She had her fortune told at the circus last year but by a gypsy man. Marie seemed to be new to the troop. “I told you I’ll spend my money the way I wish.”

A fire flared in Mr. Granger’s blue eyes. “You mean your father’s money, but, go ahead. She will only tell you what you wish to hear and what she observes from your reactions. I am sure the Tarot card was planted too. Most young women are looking for love. You don’t have to be a psychic to know that.”

Virginia stood up. As much as she disliked his words, she knew he had a point. None of the predictions made for her last year proved to come true. “Thank you, Madame Marie, but I may return after seeing more of the circus.”

“As you wish.” Marie glared after Stephen as he walked away with Virginia.

“If you really want to know your future,” he said as they passed several more tents, “I have something that can help.”

“Whatever do you mean?”

“I was not exactly honest with you about my occupation.” Virginia felt excitement flood through her at the thought that Mr. Granger was about to share the information she sought without her having to resort to any of her tricks to pry it out of him.

“Let’s sit on a bench for a moment,” he suggested guiding her away from the crowd.

He seemed to hesitate briefly as if he regretted his haste in revealing what he was about to say. Then he reached into his trouser pocket and retrieved a translucent stone. For a second she thought it was a Cape May diamond, the crystals that resembled the real jewels that Cape May residents and visitors searched for along the beach. However, they had not spent any time on the sand, and he had just arrived in town.
“You may have wondered why I did not bring along my merchandise to show the circus leader.”

Her eyes were focused on the glittery stone. “I thought they were too heavy to carry on our walk.”

“I would’ve at least brought a sample.”

“But what is that you have in your hand?”

“This is the reason I’m here. I’ve been following carnivals and circuses along the East Coast to offer my services, and this stone is one of my tools.”

“Your services?” This was more intriguing than she expected. “What exactly are your services?”

He smiled and, unlike Madame Marie, exhibited perfect white teeth. “I’m a psychic. A genuine one, but I need the stone to aid me. It was passed down to me from my father who received it from his own father. I believe it was originally found by my great grandfather.”

Virginia was not convinced. “Are you saying that rock guides you in telling the future?”

His smile deepened, and she saw a dimple appear in his cheek. “I guess that’s a way of putting it. If I rub the rock and ask a question, the answer appears in my mind.”

Author Spotlight: Rocky Rochford

authorspotlightWelcome to the Literary Library Lounge where I interview fellow authors.  I am chatting with  Rocky Rochford from Southern Spain, an hour Rocky7outside of Malaga.

limitlesslibrarylounge

Hi, Rocky. Welcome to the Literary Library Lounge. Thanks for joining me today to talk about your books. How long have you been published? What titles have you published and with which publisher? Have you self-published any titles? Please give details.

I have been published for the last three years. My first book was with United PC, but since then almost all of works have been with Solstice Publishing, but four anthologies I organized along with D.M. Cain and L.E. Fitzpatrick, were all done with Plaisted Publishing House.

Very nice. Tell us a little bit about your books — what genre you write, if you write a series, any upcoming releases or your current work-in-progress.

Rocky5Rocky1Well my books differ greatly as I write a number of works of different genres. First there is my Entwined Saga, a series of YA, Paranormal short stories, and I am working on a novel set in the same world, just a little further down the timeline and narrated by a different protagonist. So we’ve literally gone from how Radley sees the world, to how someone else from the world sees Radley. I also write Fantasy, specifically YA, Illustrated Fantasy as part of the Rise of the Elohim Series. A series which follows the exploits of Zach, a boy essentially raised to do one thing, save the world from darkness. I am currently working on the 3rd novel in the series, and will be showcasing the first three chapters as a short story entitled: The Prince of Bones, which you can expect to hear about a little bit further down the line.

rocky4I also have my short story series The Devil, which currently includes The Devil You Know and it’s Prequel The Devil Before. I fully intend to do a full  novel that covers the story called The Devil You Don’t, which will be a paranormal work. But with Say Goodbye, A Work in Progress and ROTE 3 demanding my attention, there is no time to start it just yet.

I also write horror, which my Don’t Turn Around Trilogy is clear proof of (short story horrors) and released all three together as one single collection entitled Wait and Bleed and that is just something else entirely compared to everything else by me and I intend to do both a sequel and a prequel, as Sick Like Me is half way done and Jack I have not even started.

Rocky3Lastly I do thrillers, the spy kind and the suspenseful kind, write now London Calling is my only available work in the Deep Water Series as Phoenix Rises is now no longer in print, but I plan on editing it and releasing it as two books instead of the 1 thick, 600 pages plus book it was when it first released. But before that I need to release London Burning, the sequel to Calling and prequel to Phoenix Rises. I do however though have one work releasing next month, another thriller, but one that is packed with emotions such as sadness, guilt, regret and denial. Previously when asked about Scars & Souvenirs I gave the following answer and you know what? This for me is the best way I have ever explained the work so here it is again:

Rocky2Scars & Souvenirs is a collection of emotional thrillers that mostly revolve around the life of John, a lover, a fighter and a loner, too afraid of the light to ever leave the darkness that follows him. He has watched his friends leave him and he has watched them die and the memories will never leave him. Scars are the mementos of the life our soul has led. If you are looking for a book that has some swearing, that focuses on depression, guilt, suicidal tendencies, and anger, then this just might be the book for you. But if you’re expecting to see the story run in a linear sequence of events, you may want to throw that thought out of the window, I did a Memento with book and honestly, it is the best way, because it makes it a lot harder for you to work out where the story is going to go and which emotion you’re going to be made to feel next. And I will be biased and admit Say You’ll Haunt Me is my favourite story in the collection, but Ghosts and The Future that Never Was was two of the hardest to write.

Wow! You are an incredible versatile writer. I admire that because I like to vary my books, as well. Currently, most of them are mysteries with a dash of romance, be we covered all of that in the interview I did on your blog: https://rockyrochford.wordpress.com/2016/08/07/author-spotlight-debbie-de-louise/

Describe your goals as a writer. What do you hope to achieve in the next few years? What are you planning to do to reach these goals?

Rocky6Something I would like to do in the next 5 years, a goal I would really like to achieve is to do a movie. I want to do a Wait and Bleed movie, put Jack on the big screen and let his philosophical wit, dark yet honest sense of humour and murderous tendencies shock the movie going audience. I would also like to continue each of the works I am currently writing and have added at least one more sequel to pretty much everything I have released so far and try to release something new as well.

I can very well see what you describe as making a good movie. Good luck with that. It’s a great goal.

What type of reader are you hoping to attract? Who do you believe would be most interested in reading your books?

Well as I have said above, I write a lot of different genres so the type of reader I intend to attract is all of them. I write different genres because we all have different tastes and I want to be able to write something that applies to everyone. I want to give lovers of fantasy, a fantasy series they can sink their teeth into. Horror for horror lovers to adore and even do things for a younger audience, such as children stories for those who are a lot younger. My audience is for everyone and everyone does not have to read my every work, but merely the ones that do apply to them.

That makes a lot of sense, Rocky. I read multi-genres, so I would probably like most of your books.

What advice would you give other authors or those still trying to get published?

Don’t give up, ever. No doesn’t mean no, just not now. Everyone gets rejected and if you’re going to let multiple rejections stop you from submitting and even writing, then maybe being an author isn’t the right direction for you. Getting published is  not easy, unless you are already famous, have a story everyone wants to hear about, or just happen to have a lot of money and sway. But don’t give up. The harder the fight, the greater you will feel when your book is signed. When it’s being edited. When it gets releasesd. Also if you can, get an agent and don’t self publish. Hire an independent proofreader and editor to perfect your book and then submit to a proper publishing house, but don’t sell out and self -publish. It’s not worth it.

I agree with that, Rocky. Although I self-published my first book and know of Indie authors that are doing quite well, I’ve been very happy being published traditionally. I don’t believe there’s the same stigma on self-published authors today as there used to be, but I still think being published traditionally carries more weight in the industry. As I mentioned in our interview, I’m hoping to attract an agent and larger publisher, and I believe having my books published by small presses is the right initial step.  I also totally agree with how important it is to be persistent if you truly want a career in writing. This can’t be emphasized enough.

What particular challenges and struggles did you face before first becoming published?

I was probably faced with most. As a 13-year-old who wrote their first novel, a novel mostly written in Spanish, it needed to be translated for an English audience, so when I was relearning English, I was translating the book and when I submitted it to publisher (at 13.) All I got was “No!” There were some insults too, but the past is the past. So I had to deal with rejecting, adapting a ms with no money to pay for help with it and as someone in a country that isn’t England, or America where publishing is a lot easier, a lot of publishing firms refused to even talk to me, because I was in Spain and because I was young. The years that then followed were just pretty much sailing a sea grief and rejection until just over three years ago, a publisher finally said yes and things have been better ever since.

That’s an inspiring story. I also began writing young but didn’t submit my material anywhere until I was in my thirties.

Have you taken any writing or publishing classes? If so, please provide information about them and if you feel they helped you further your professional skills.

Since the age of 14, after 4 years of studying at a Spanish school, I left the education system and have been pretty much self-taught since then. Most of what I know now was what I’d learned from reading books by others, but I had to relearn English first because my English had become terrible because I’d spend about 14 hours a day talking only in Spanish. So nope, no classes. Did apply for some though, but nothing ever came of that.

Interesting. Although I’ve taken classes, I’ve also found, like you, that a significant part of writing can be learned through reading books and emulating some of the styles of other authors (but not duplicating them, of course).

What are your hobbies and interests besides writing?

Scuba diving. Swatting up on my knowledge of maritime history. Underwater photography, wake boarding. I also engage in Underwater clean-ups whenever I can and am involved with a small marine conservation group, so I really enjoy doing that. I pretty much just love the water, being around it, on it and even in it.

That’s wonderful. I bet it’s a good way to relax in between writing.

What do you like most and least about being an author?

The thing I love most is holding my book in my hands when the initial journey comes to an end. Writing, editing, proofing, releasing, it’s all just the first part of doing a book, but that few minutes you have in between the first and second part of the journey, where you do actually get to enjoy the fruits of your labor, it makes it all worth it.

I think every author feels the same.

savingfire3Book 1 – Suicide Mission

Sara Night lost her family three years ago in a car crash…

She tried to continue living a normal life, going to school, spending time with friends, and even trying to be a part of the family that took her in. She had almost gotten the hang of it, and moved past the suicide attempt.

Almost.

Then she was torn away from her new family, her old life, and thrown into a world of guns, knifes, criminals, and where every mistake could get her killed. She was needed for what seems like an easy in-then-out mission.

That was until she got caught.

Sara then had to form an uneasy alliance with a cartel member to escape, which reveals her family’s car crash wasn’t an accident after all.

Is her new life worth more to her than revenge?

Or will she die trying to figure out why her family was targeted?

savingfire4Book 2 – Covert Operations

CIRA agent Jackson Reeves won’t be denied his revenge…

He’s hunted down and killed the men responsible for his family’s fatal “accident”—all except the mastermind, Ash Crest. The problem is someone beat him to it, and Jackson won’t rest until he finds out who, and why. His search is complicated, because he’s several years into an undercover operation to take down the Cardoza Cartel and can’t risk blowing his cover.

Jackson’s sister Danielle is in danger from the very organization he has to pretend to support…

Camden Cardoza intends to take over the Cartel from his father, but to do so he needs a wife, and he has his sights on Danielle. Jackson knows he has to bring down the Cardozas before they claim his sister.

CIRA sends in more agents, including the beautiful and mysterious Night Stripe, whose task is to befriend Danielle and infiltrate the Cartel. Jackson struggles to find a way to communicate without giving both of them away…and falls for her in the process.

Jackson and Night Stripe walk the thin line between their mutual attraction, conflicting missions, and the danger of discovery, as Jackson’s objectives threaten to overwhelm him, putting those he loves in danger.

Can Jackson defeat the Cartel, save his sister, find Ash Crest’s killer, and complete his revenge—without losing his heart, mind, or life in the process?

savingfire5Book 3 – Left for Dead

Katya Petrov is supposed to be dead…

When Ash Crest can’t finish the job, Katya is targeted by her own father, Volodya Petrov. He decides to take matters into his own hands by killing Katya himself.

He never expected Night Stripe to interfere.

When Night Stripe killed Ash and shredded the files from his office, she hoped his hit list would die with him and the survivors would be able to live without fear.

She was wrong.

Renegade had been undercover with the Russian mafia. It was a dark, dangerous, and deadly mission, especially for those unfortunate enough to be in his way. Disbanding the Cardoza mafia took time. But now, with Renegade’s cover blown and other CIRA agents under protection, it’s only a matter of time before Night Stripe is exposed.

Leaving one man alive was his only mistake.

The goal is to remove Volodya from power and save Katya, but Night Stripe didn’t plan on going back to save her teammate—and being captured in the process.

She’s alone, trapped, and fighting to survive. Can Night Stripe save herself, protect Katya, and finish the mission she started so many years ago? Or will she be left for dead?

What Goodreads reviewers are already saying about Erin Lee’s latest release, When I’m Dead:

This book is worthy of so much more then 5 stars!!! I have never read a book that has touched me and made me feel things that I had a hard time believing were out there….hope, faith, redemption.

I was overwhelmed with emotion and left speechless.

WhenI'mDead2BLURB: Violet Hoffman is a planner. She’s had more than enough time—especially on holidays—to think this through. There’s really no point in turning back. Now, armed with a plan, Violet only needs to pull the trigger. She runs through her list of essentials: Motel room, check. Bottle of pills, check. Razor blades, check. Knife, yup. Purpose, check. Voice ready to be heard. Got it. Revenge, coming right up. Violet is ready. After all, she decides, everyone is born for a reason. For most of her life, she’s been different. Since she was nine years old, she’s carried a secret that made it impossible for her to be normal. For a decade, she’s been torn between loyalties and healing. But now, finally an adult, Violet can let it all out. And it isn’t going to be pretty. But then again, being ‘pretty’ and ‘special’ really aren’t what they’re cracked up to be. When I’m Dead is the story of an eighteen-year-old abuse victim alienated by her family. Ignored by a faulty system and shuffled from placement to placement, Violet is finally old enough to be heard. Sometimes, the best messages are given without words. And Violet’s always been a person of action. Where will Violet’s plan and actions take her? Will she finally get her message across? What will they think of her, when she’s dead? Will they even notice?
