If you like cozy mysteries that take place in a small town with quirky characters and several twists, you should enjoy both books. Between a Rock and a Hard Place will be released by Solstice Publishing this fall.

Warning: If you haven’t read A STONE’S THROW, the following preview to its sequel may contain spoilers.

Librarian Alicia McKinney has put the past behind her…

Two years ago, Alicia discovered both a terrible truth and lasting love with John McKinney in the small town of Cobble Cove, New York. Now a busy mother of twin babies and co-author of a mystery series, Alicia couldn’t be happier.

brhp-teaser-2Alicia’s contentment and safety are challenged…

John and Alicia receive an offer they can’t refuse…

When John’s sister offers to babysit while she and John take a much-needed vacation in New York City, Alicia is reluctant to leave her children because of the disturbances in Cobble Cove. John assures her the town is safe in the hands of Sheriff-elect Ramsay. Although Alicia’s experience with and dislike of the former Long Island detective don’t alleviate her concern, she and John take their trip.

Alicia faces her worst nightmare…

Secluded CabinThe McKinneys’ vacation is cut short when they learn their babies have been kidnapped and John’s sister shot. Alicia and John’s situation puts them between a rock and a hard place when the main suspect is found dead before the ransom is paid. In order to save their children, the McKinneys race against the clock to solve a mystery more puzzling than those found in their own books. Can they do it before time runs out?

Author Spotlight Simon Maltman

authorspotlightWelcome to the Literary Library Lounge where I interview fellow authors. Today, I am chatting with  Simon Maltman from Belfast, Northern Ireland.simonmaltmanlimitlesslibrarylounge

Thanks for joining me, Simon.  Please take a seat and make yourself comfortable.
I understand you have a novel that is just being released by Solstice Publishing today. Can you give me some details about it?

chaserontherocks

A Chaser on the Rocks (releasing on 13th September) is my first full-length novel, being published by Solstice. I have had a number of short stories released over the last few years in various anthologies and magazines. I have also self-published a number of ebooks. On Amazon, my short Return Run was released a few months ago by Solstice.

Wonderful! Can you tell us a little bit more about your writiing?

I write crime fiction that is based in Northern Ireland. My debut novel is being released on 13th September. A Chaser on the Rocks is a mystery noir featuring Brian Caskey, a modern day PI with mental health problems. It is a ‘story within a story’ and also follows a character that Caskey has created who is also a PI, working in Belfast in the 1940’s, during the Belfast Blitz. I suppose it can be quite dark, but I try and inject a good dose of humour, something I think is second nature, hailing from Northern Ireland!

I plan my next release to be a collection of around twelve of my short stories.

Would you describe your goals as a writer to us?  What do you hope to achieve in the next few years? What are you planning to do to reach these goals?

My main objective was to find a publisher and I have been really happy with Solstice. I spend a lot of time trying to network and up to now trying to find people who would release my short stories or take on my novel. I now would like to put out another few novels in the next couple of years and hope to find a decent size readership. The dream would be to be able to do this full time.

Great goal. Mine is similar. I signed with Solstice this past August, and my mystery, BETWEEN A ROCK AND A HARD PLACE, should be out this fall. I am very happy with them so far.

What type of reader are you hoping to attract?  Who do you believe would be most interested in reading your books?

I think anyone with an interest in crime fiction would potentially enjoy my novel. It is very much in the tradition of a psychological mystery and the 1940’s part is heavily influenced by classic Film Noir. Through using the crime fiction genre I have also tried to tease out various themes, including the area of authorship and voice and I’ve tried to play with it a little bit.

I’m sure that would have wide appeal among crime fiction readers. It sounds very interesting.

What advice would you give other authors or those still trying to get published?

I would say to cast a wide net and to persevere. It can take a long time to get picked up and any feedback I think is valuable. I think when looking for contracts or reviews or anything like that, you just really have to dedicate the time and realize there will be lots of unanswered emails and plenty of rejections.

Yes, that’s very true. I agree that authors need to keep at it and that overnight successes are quite rare.

What particular challenges and struggles did you face before first becoming published?

I had the usual rejections and near misses, but it didn’t bother me too much. I recognized that it is all part of the path to getting published and I’m grateful for the ‘yes’s’ that I did get on the way to finding a publisher for my full-length novel. I don’t have an agent but was fortunate to get some interest early on from a high profile one and he was actually the reason I sat down and tried my hand at a full-length novel at all.

I’m also seeking an agent and had some positive responses from a few but am still looking. I think it’s great that you were inspired by one to start writing novels.

Have you taken any writing or publishing classes? If so, please provide information about them and if you feel they helped you further your professional skills.

I haven’t, but I would consider something certainly in the future if I found one that interested me in particular. I used to be part of a writers group who met up to discuss their work.

There are many online courses available today, many of them free. I took some that my library offered through Gale Courses, an online database. It got me back into writing after a brief period of taking time off. I also helped start a writer’s club at my library. In addition to being an author, I’m also a librarian and suggested that our patrons might be interested in a writing group.

What hobbies and interests do you have besides writing?

I love music and have always recorded and played in bands over the years. I have two kids now and certainly it’s easier to fit in writing than gigging and lots of rehearsals! I still love doing a bit of recording out in my garage. I also love movies, my favorites would be old Film Noir and a lot of foreign language films.

Sounds like you incorporated some of your interests into your writing which is great. It always lends authenticity to fiction when an author writes about something familiar to him or her.

What do you like most and least about being an author? What is your toughest challenge?

I think it’s all good really! It’s lovely to know that people have enjoyed things you have written and getting good reviews is a buzz. I think the necessity of marketing and promotion can get you down at times, particularly as it is an uphill struggle when there are so many books out there!

Absolutely. Most authors find promoting the toughest part of their work.

Can you please list your social media links, website, blog, etc. so readers can connect with you.

Announcing My Stories in Sci Fic, Fantasy, and Romance Anthologies

anthology1 anthology2I am proud to announce that my stories, “Deadline” and “The Path to Rainbow Bridge” have been accepted to be included in two anthologies being published on September 16th by Solstice Publishing.

“Deadline,” in the Project 9 Anthology, is a Sci Fic story with somewhat of a Twilight Zone theme. It tells the tale of Susan Shaffer, a student and Features editor of the college newspaper at fictional Brockton University. After falling out of her dorm bed one morning, Susan experiences some strange shifts in time and faces much confusion and fear until she discovers what is happening to her.

The Path to Rainbow Bridge” for the Realms of Fantastic Stories anthology is one that is close to my heart. It features a cast of cats, some of whom are based on my own deceased pets. When Tom the gatekeeper assigns Shadow to gather Kate’s fur family together because her elderly Siamese is scheduled to arrive on Rainbow Bridge the following day, Shadow is in for a special surprise.

If either or both of these stories sound interesting to you, look for their anthologies being released September 16 with other Sci Fic and Fantasy tales by Solstice authors.

Author Spotlight: Rocky Rochford

authorspotlightWelcome to the Literary Library Lounge where I interview fellow authors.  I am chatting with  Rocky Rochford from Southern Spain, an hour Rocky7outside of Malaga.

limitlesslibrarylounge

Hi, Rocky. Welcome to the Literary Library Lounge. Thanks for joining me today to talk about your books. How long have you been published? What titles have you published and with which publisher? Have you self-published any titles? Please give details.

I have been published for the last three years. My first book was with United PC, but since then almost all of works have been with Solstice Publishing, but four anthologies I organized along with D.M. Cain and L.E. Fitzpatrick, were all done with Plaisted Publishing House.

Very nice. Tell us a little bit about your books — what genre you write, if you write a series, any upcoming releases or your current work-in-progress.

Rocky5Rocky1Well my books differ greatly as I write a number of works of different genres. First there is my Entwined Saga, a series of YA, Paranormal short stories, and I am working on a novel set in the same world, just a little further down the timeline and narrated by a different protagonist. So we’ve literally gone from how Radley sees the world, to how someone else from the world sees Radley. I also write Fantasy, specifically YA, Illustrated Fantasy as part of the Rise of the Elohim Series. A series which follows the exploits of Zach, a boy essentially raised to do one thing, save the world from darkness. I am currently working on the 3rd novel in the series, and will be showcasing the first three chapters as a short story entitled: The Prince of Bones, which you can expect to hear about a little bit further down the line.

rocky4I also have my short story series The Devil, which currently includes The Devil You Know and it’s Prequel The Devil Before. I fully intend to do a full  novel that covers the story called The Devil You Don’t, which will be a paranormal work. But with Say Goodbye, A Work in Progress and ROTE 3 demanding my attention, there is no time to start it just yet.

I also write horror, which my Don’t Turn Around Trilogy is clear proof of (short story horrors) and released all three together as one single collection entitled Wait and Bleed and that is just something else entirely compared to everything else by me and I intend to do both a sequel and a prequel, as Sick Like Me is half way done and Jack I have not even started.

Rocky3Lastly I do thrillers, the spy kind and the suspenseful kind, write now London Calling is my only available work in the Deep Water Series as Phoenix Rises is now no longer in print, but I plan on editing it and releasing it as two books instead of the 1 thick, 600 pages plus book it was when it first released. But before that I need to release London Burning, the sequel to Calling and prequel to Phoenix Rises. I do however though have one work releasing next month, another thriller, but one that is packed with emotions such as sadness, guilt, regret and denial. Previously when asked about Scars & Souvenirs I gave the following answer and you know what? This for me is the best way I have ever explained the work so here it is again:

Rocky2Scars & Souvenirs is a collection of emotional thrillers that mostly revolve around the life of John, a lover, a fighter and a loner, too afraid of the light to ever leave the darkness that follows him. He has watched his friends leave him and he has watched them die and the memories will never leave him. Scars are the mementos of the life our soul has led. If you are looking for a book that has some swearing, that focuses on depression, guilt, suicidal tendencies, and anger, then this just might be the book for you. But if you’re expecting to see the story run in a linear sequence of events, you may want to throw that thought out of the window, I did a Memento with book and honestly, it is the best way, because it makes it a lot harder for you to work out where the story is going to go and which emotion you’re going to be made to feel next. And I will be biased and admit Say You’ll Haunt Me is my favourite story in the collection, but Ghosts and The Future that Never Was was two of the hardest to write.

Wow! You are an incredible versatile writer. I admire that because I like to vary my books, as well. Currently, most of them are mysteries with a dash of romance, be we covered all of that in the interview I did on your blog: https://rockyrochford.wordpress.com/2016/08/07/author-spotlight-debbie-de-louise/

Describe your goals as a writer. What do you hope to achieve in the next few years? What are you planning to do to reach these goals?

Rocky6Something I would like to do in the next 5 years, a goal I would really like to achieve is to do a movie. I want to do a Wait and Bleed movie, put Jack on the big screen and let his philosophical wit, dark yet honest sense of humour and murderous tendencies shock the movie going audience. I would also like to continue each of the works I am currently writing and have added at least one more sequel to pretty much everything I have released so far and try to release something new as well.

I can very well see what you describe as making a good movie. Good luck with that. It’s a great goal.

What type of reader are you hoping to attract? Who do you believe would be most interested in reading your books?

Well as I have said above, I write a lot of different genres so the type of reader I intend to attract is all of them. I write different genres because we all have different tastes and I want to be able to write something that applies to everyone. I want to give lovers of fantasy, a fantasy series they can sink their teeth into. Horror for horror lovers to adore and even do things for a younger audience, such as children stories for those who are a lot younger. My audience is for everyone and everyone does not have to read my every work, but merely the ones that do apply to them.

That makes a lot of sense, Rocky. I read multi-genres, so I would probably like most of your books.

What advice would you give other authors or those still trying to get published?

Don’t give up, ever. No doesn’t mean no, just not now. Everyone gets rejected and if you’re going to let multiple rejections stop you from submitting and even writing, then maybe being an author isn’t the right direction for you. Getting published is  not easy, unless you are already famous, have a story everyone wants to hear about, or just happen to have a lot of money and sway. But don’t give up. The harder the fight, the greater you will feel when your book is signed. When it’s being edited. When it gets releasesd. Also if you can, get an agent and don’t self publish. Hire an independent proofreader and editor to perfect your book and then submit to a proper publishing house, but don’t sell out and self -publish. It’s not worth it.

I agree with that, Rocky. Although I self-published my first book and know of Indie authors that are doing quite well, I’ve been very happy being published traditionally. I don’t believe there’s the same stigma on self-published authors today as there used to be, but I still think being published traditionally carries more weight in the industry. As I mentioned in our interview, I’m hoping to attract an agent and larger publisher, and I believe having my books published by small presses is the right initial step.  I also totally agree with how important it is to be persistent if you truly want a career in writing. This can’t be emphasized enough.

What particular challenges and struggles did you face before first becoming published?

I was probably faced with most. As a 13-year-old who wrote their first novel, a novel mostly written in Spanish, it needed to be translated for an English audience, so when I was relearning English, I was translating the book and when I submitted it to publisher (at 13.) All I got was “No!” There were some insults too, but the past is the past. So I had to deal with rejecting, adapting a ms with no money to pay for help with it and as someone in a country that isn’t England, or America where publishing is a lot easier, a lot of publishing firms refused to even talk to me, because I was in Spain and because I was young. The years that then followed were just pretty much sailing a sea grief and rejection until just over three years ago, a publisher finally said yes and things have been better ever since.

That’s an inspiring story. I also began writing young but didn’t submit my material anywhere until I was in my thirties.

Have you taken any writing or publishing classes? If so, please provide information about them and if you feel they helped you further your professional skills.

Since the age of 14, after 4 years of studying at a Spanish school, I left the education system and have been pretty much self-taught since then. Most of what I know now was what I’d learned from reading books by others, but I had to relearn English first because my English had become terrible because I’d spend about 14 hours a day talking only in Spanish. So nope, no classes. Did apply for some though, but nothing ever came of that.

Interesting. Although I’ve taken classes, I’ve also found, like you, that a significant part of writing can be learned through reading books and emulating some of the styles of other authors (but not duplicating them, of course).

What are your hobbies and interests besides writing?

Scuba diving. Swatting up on my knowledge of maritime history. Underwater photography, wake boarding. I also engage in Underwater clean-ups whenever I can and am involved with a small marine conservation group, so I really enjoy doing that. I pretty much just love the water, being around it, on it and even in it.

That’s wonderful. I bet it’s a good way to relax in between writing.

What do you like most and least about being an author?

The thing I love most is holding my book in my hands when the initial journey comes to an end. Writing, editing, proofing, releasing, it’s all just the first part of doing a book, but that few minutes you have in between the first and second part of the journey, where you do actually get to enjoy the fruits of your labor, it makes it all worth it.

I think every author feels the same.

#LifeBooksWriting Blog Challenge: My Five-Year Plan

blogchallengegraphicupdatedI’m very excited to participate in the blog challenge Sophia Valentine of Lifestyle and Literature created (see graphic for topics and dates if you have a blog and would like to participate. If you’re a reader, I’m sure you’ll enjoy learning about some of the great participating authors).

This week’s post is about where I’d like to be in five years. Although this can apply to many life areas, I’m going to concentrate on my writing right now. Since a “picture’s worth a thousand words,” here is my view of what I would like to see happen with my books in five years. I’ve only shown one possible headline, but I hope to have at least five more books published by 2021.newspaper3How do I plan to make this happen? I’ll continue writing, of course. Currently, my mystery tentatively titled, “Between a Rock and a Hard Place” has been contracted with Solstice Publishing. It is the sequel to “A Stone’s Throw” published last November.  I am also working on a completely new standalone I consider a psychological thriller. I’m hoping to submit it to an agent and/or publisher some time this fall.

Besides writing, I need to promote my books. I plan to continue advertising on social media but, more importantly, connecting with my followers. My five-year plan includes  making additional professional and reader contacts; increasing subscribers to my author newsletter; sending press releases to the media; and appearing at libraries, bookstores, author signings, and writing conferences. Maybe in five years I’ll be able to clone myself, so I can manage to do all this.  If not, I will try to prioritize my time as best as I can.

If I don’t achieve my goal in five years or sooner, I will still be happy if I’ve reached a good number of people who enjoy my books. I don’t intend to compete with anyone but myself or change my writing to please what I perceive the public wants. That doesn’t mean I won’t try to emulate some of my favorite authors or seek advice from fellow writers and readers. It simply means I will strive to improve my writing with each book and develop my own individual style.
