Debbie’s Retirement Life: Week 1, Day 8: 12/30/22

This is the second entry in my retirement column. If you missed the first, you can still read it here.

My first week of retirement after Christmas was quiet. December 24 and 25 were very cold days. We had temperatures in the single digits on Christmas Eve. We didn’t go out because my husband wasn’t feeling well, although he didn’t have COVID or the flu., so it was just the three of us and our cats celebrating the holiday at home.

My daughter made a delicious lasagna that we’re still eating because she froze some.

Since Tuesday, I’ve had a very stuffy nose but no temperature, and my home test is negative. I think it’s a head cold. I also didn’t go to lunch with my friends as I’d planned because one of them had COVID and is still recovering. We’re rescheduling for later in the month.

Retirement life is an adjustment. A gift I received for Christmas was a To Do Planner, that will be useful with my Google calendar and help me keep a schedule.

I’ve registered for several virtual library exercise classes hosted by my library and others. I’m hoping to start a new book after New Year’s, but I decided to take a week of rest and enjoy my new freedom. The only work I did these last seven days was organize my desk. I can finally see the top of it that was once covered in papers and other items. I’m sorry I didn’t get a before shot, but here’s the after shot.

I’m still working on my writing files and hope to finish cleaning them out and sorting them by next week. There were some interesting articles and letters in the folders, some going back to the 1990’s. I came across my original Cat Writers’ Association’s application letter from 1995. For privacy, I’ve omitted the return address.

Since I’m always searching for pens, I went through the mugs of pens on my desk and threw out the ones that didn’t work. Amazingly, most of them did. There were even cat and llama-shaped pens and a Nancy Pearl action figure to remind me of my library days. The llama pen will come in handy, inspiring me to write my next cozy mystery, The Case of the Llama Raising Librarian.”

While I was cleaning, my cat, Hermione, found the extra space on my desk and took it as an invitation to jump on it and knock down items.

With my extra time this week, I caught up on my book and magazine reading, took cat naps with my cats, and walked to the library to wish everyone a Happy New Year. I also spent some time adding jewelry to my new jewelry box that I purchased with my retirement gift card. It has lots of space for my earrings, necklaces, rings, and bracelets and looks very nice on my bureau.

Yesterday, my daughter and I made chocolate banana muffins and bread. She’s also on an organizing kick and showed me how to use the No Waste app to keep an inventory of items we have in the pantry and refrigerator, so we don’t buy duplicate groceries or forget to buy something we run out of.

Next week, I’ll be starting a few of the virtual exercise classes I registered for and updating the bio and information on my website and social media. I’ll also be sending out my January author newsletter that will contain character naming and survey contests for readers, as well as a list of my 12 favorite books this past year. This book won a silver medal from Reader’s Favorite, was a finalist in the mystery category of Top shelf Magazine’s contest, and was nominated for best mystery by the Author Academy Awards. Sarah Collins needs an escape. Mourning her brother’s death and the impending breakup of her marriage, she returns to her childhood home in South Carolina, where her family operated an inn.

Sarah hasn’t been back to Sea Scope for twenty years; not since she and her brother Glen discovered a body by the nearby lighthouse. She never understood why her parents left Sea Scope so suddenly, or the reasons behind her father’s suicide.

After Sarah returns to the inn, she faces long-buried memories, text messages and strange clues. Something is not right in Sea Scope. Reunited with people from her past, she tries to figure out what’s going on in her childhood home.

Widowed librarian Alicia Fairmont needs answers…

After her husband is killed in a hit and run accident, Alicia travels upstate to his hometown of Cobble Cove, New York, hoping to locate his estranged family and shed light on his mysterious past. Anticipating staying only a weekend, her visit is extended when she accepts a job at the town’s library.

Secrets stretch decades into the past…

Assisted by handsome newspaper publisher and aspiring novelist, John McKinney, Alicia discovers a connection between her absent in-laws and a secret John’s father has kept for over sixty years. But her investigation is interrupted when she receives word her house has burned and arson is suspected, sending her rushing back to Long Island, accompanied by John.

Back in Cobble Cove, cryptic clues are uncovered…

When Alicia returns, she finds a strange diary, confiscated letters, and a digital audio device containing a recording made the day her husband was killed. Anonymous notes warn Alicia to leave town, but she can’t turn her back on the mystery—or her attraction to John.

As the pieces begin to fall into place, evidence points to John’s involvement in her husband’s accident. The past and present threaten to collide, and Alicia confronts her fears…

Has she fallen in love with her husband’s killer?

Can you Make a special Sandwich or Judge one?

What's the Secret Ingredient in the McKinney's PB&J Recipe-I’m sponsoring a special, fun contest in my April newsletter. Here’s the info:

PB&J RECIPE CONTEST

April’s contest will appeal to all you cooks out there. For a chance at a $5 Amazon gift card or the ebook version of A Stone’s Throw, submit a recipe that you think will rival the McKinney’s PB&J sandwiches. The top recipe will win the prize mentioned plus be included in my next book. Two other runner-up recipes will also be included in my next book. Here is how the recipe is described in A Stone’s Throw:

“I make the peanut butter with fresh nuts and my special recipe. The jelly is preserved by us. Dad has canned varieties of other fruits and jams in the garage. It’s one of his hobbies.”

“I hope you like the sandwiches. I use sourdough bread spread with a small amount of jellied preserves over the peanut butter. There are a few secret ingredients in the preserves, but my dad doesn’t allow me to reveal them. Our family are peanut butter connoisseurs.”

Alicia bit into a triangular sandwich wedge. It was quite tasty, with a slightly sweet flavor. “Very good,” she told him. “I don’t eat much peanut butter, but this is better than any Skippy I’ve tried.”

To enter the contest, like my author Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/debbie.delouise.author/ and comment with your recipe on the pinned post on the top. Only newsletter subscribers are eligible to win. To subscribe to the newsletter, sign up at https://debbiedelouisewordpress.com or comment with your email on this post, and I will manually subscribe you. I will also need two judges for the contest. Judges will not be able to enter the contest, but they will receive a complimentary ebook or $5 Amazon gift card. Judges also must be subscribers to the newsletter. If you’d like to be a judge, please contact me at debbielibrarianwriter@gmail.com and list why you think you are qualified to judge. If there are under 10 entries, only one judge will be selected.

All recipe entries must be received by April 15. Judging will take place between April 16 and April 29th and the winner announced in the May newsletter. In the case of duplicate entries, only the first will be considered for any prize. Only one entry per subscriber. Facebook, WordPress, and Mailchimp are not associated or affiliated with this contest.

Ruff Drafts Newsletter

FREE AUTOGRAPHED BOOK2Did you know that I’ve started a newsletter that is separate from my blog and website? It’s also known as Ruff Drafts, but it features much more. Emailed to subscribers about twice a month, it features updates about my writing including my Cobble Cove mysteries. It also features exclusive content, contests, and special offers.

The first issue that was mailed March 1st, had an offer to new subscribers that entered them into a contest for an autographed book or $10 Amazon gift card (the choice of the winner). This contest is still going on through April 1st or until the newsletter has 100 subscribers (whichever comes first).

The next newsletter is being mailed some time next week, so if you are interested in participating in the contest, subscribe by filling out the pop-up sign-up form at https://debbiedelouise.wordpress.com. What I’m Up To

debbieIn lieu of my usual Feature Friday, I’m taking a brief break to update you about A STONE’S THROW and its sequel that is almost ready for submission as well as share with you some other projects I have on the burner.

Today, March 4th, is the first meeting of the new writer’s club I’m starting at my public library. I’ve had men and women of all ages express an interest, and I’m excited about participating and sharing with both unpublished writers and those like myself who are published but still new to the field. Our group will initially meet on the first Friday of each month. I’ve prepared a questionnaire to determine the experience and interests of those who join. I know the value of a writing community, and it’s wonderful to be able to offer this type of benefit at the library where I work.

Ruff DraftsNewsletterThe first Ruff Drafts newsletter was sent out on March 1st with the opportunity for a lucky subscriber to win a free, autographed book or a $10 Amazon gift certificate. The contest is still open. To subscribe, you simply fill out the pop-up form that opens when you visit my WordPress site and then confirm the email you receive from MailChimp. Alternately, you can contact me with your email, and I can add you to the list.

Unlike this blog, the newsletter will contain only information about my writing. Subscribers will be informed of the latest news about my books, be sent exclusive content, and be eligible for special offers and giveaways. The newsletter is an attempt to help grow my fan base, so I hope all of you who read this blog will consider subscribing.

Next month, I’ll be speaking and signing copies of A STONE’S THROW at my local Barnes and Noble bookstore. Several of my co-workers and patrons as well as family members and friends will be attending. The event will be advertised online and in the store.

masendiesinnyWhat else am I up to? Besides adding the final research and revisions to the sequel to A STONE’S THROW that I hope to publish some time this summer. I will also be signing books at MASE at Foxwoods Casino in June and at INDIES IN NY in August. Tickets are already on sale for both events. Further details and any specials I’ll be offering at these events will be listed in an upcoming newsletter.

A STONE’S THROW continues to be on reserve at my library, and several people have been kind enough to purchase a copy to support my writing. Other libraries as well as Barnes and Noble have begun stocking it. If you request it at your local library or bookstore, they can order it through Amazon or Ingram.

reviews

For those who have already read the first book, reviews are very helpful to a new author. They don’t have to be complicated or long. Reviews can be submitted to Amazon, Goodreads, and/or barnesandnoble.com.

I hope this update has answered some of your questions about what I’m up to now and will be working toward in the the next few months. If you have any others, please comment.
