Chapter Thirty-Four

We were leaving the ark when Jasper hailed Edward over the radio, inquiring his whereabouts, and if he’d seen me. “We’re headed your direction now, along with Marco.”

Jasper’s voice warbled incoherently through the speaker.

“What was that?” Edward responded. “Come back.”

A few seconds later, we entered the tunnel and heard, “Does she have Ray’s sat phone?”

He faced me, and I tapped the laptop bag hanging from my shoulder.

“She sure does.”

“Good,” Jasper responded. “That’s our only hope of getting out now.”

I stopped beside Edward who froze and turned his head like rusty clockwork. His worried gaze relayed what I asked aloud. “What does that mean?”

“Jasper. Jasper? Come back.”

There was nothing but fuzz over the radio waves. We glanced at each other, shortly depleted of words and effort. Our silence presumed Teague had either remained belligerent about coming out, or had refused to shut off the jammer. Marco crept closer and placed his hand on Edward’s back, corroborating our third unspoken assumption.

We meandered, lethargically, but when the postern to the stairwell became a beacon of hope, we hastened toward it.

At the top of the landing, Edward decided he would proceed onward with the treatment. Before he departed, I removed my laptop bag, slipped the strap over his head and onto his shoulder, and he barreled upward for the library.

Hello! I’m RK Close, author of the ‘Vampire Files Trilogy’. ‘Red Night’ is the first book in the series. I write paranormal-romance & urban-fantasy with a hint of darkness and a dash of humor. Ann Rice gets all the credit for my vampire addiction which started in my early twenties. Like so many others, I fell in love with her vampires first.

Originally from Kentucky, I’ve lived most of my life in Arizona where I met and married my true love. We were late to the game so we knocked out three ankle-biters in quick succession. We often joke that parenthood saved us from ourselves. Now we need to be saved from parenthood. *just kidding* We love our darling spawn.

When I’m not writing, I’m taking care of a busy family, dragging my butt to CrossFit, thinking about my stories or spending time with family and friends. My dream is to sell enough books to hire someone to clean our house and cook our meals. Okay, maybe that’s my family’s dream. I tend to get a little obsessed when I write.

ELIZABETH RODERICK grew up as a barefoot ruffian on a fruit orchard near Yakima, in the eastern part of Washington State. After weathering the grunge revolution and devolution in Olympia, Washington, Portland, Oregon and Seattle, she recently moved to the (very, very) small town of Shandon, California: a small cluster of houses amidst the vineyards of the Central Coast.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in Spanish from The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington, and worked for many years as a paralegal and translator. She went on to study chemistry, physics, and higher mathematics, with the goal of becoming a research chemist, but was eventually forced to concede that graduate school would require too much time away from her husband and daughter, and that–despite her good-enough grades –she was perhaps the wrong kind of nerd for such pursuits, being more the type that likes to dress in cloaks and hauberks rather than lab coats and goggles.

She is a musician and songwriter, and has played in many bands. She’s rocked pretty much every instrument, including some she doesn’t even know the real names for, but mostly guitar, bass and keyboards. Iris Blobel was born and raised in Germany and only immigrated to Australia in the late 1990s. Having had the travel bug most of her life, Iris spent quite some time living in Scotland, London as well as Canada where she her husband. Her love for putting her stories onto paper has only emerged recently, but now her laptop is a constant companion.

Iris resides west of Melbourne with her husband and her two beautiful daughters.

Next to her job at a private school, she also presents a German Program at the local Community Radio.
