Guest Post: When Writing All Those Little Details by Rachael Tamayo

downloadIt’s my pleasure to feature fellow Solstice publishing author, Rachael Tamayo, on the third week of the Solstice Publishing Author’s Winter Blog Tour. Rachael addresses the all important details that make writing come alive in a reader’s mind. With no further ado, here’s Rachael:

As a reader, or a writer, have you ever read something that just seemed to be….missing something? Can’t put your finger on it? Grammar looks good, plot seems okay….but…..just not quite feeling it?

This has happened to me when I’m working on my own books or reading the unfinished manuscripts of others. Occasionally I’ll see it happen in published works as well.  So, what on earth am I talking about?

Those missing details. That’s what I’m talking about. The things that give the scene life.  They make the blood flow in the veins of your characters and the heart beat in your plot. Don’t ever underestimate a well placed little nugget, even something simple.

Example one: He swerved to avoid the car that veered into his lane.

OK, it’s to the point. Nothing really wrong here, tells us what is happening, right? But does it draw you in? Does it make you feel what the driver is feeling? If you can make you reader feel what the character does…you’ve succeeded.  You will have a reader that will turn the page to see what happens.

Example two:  The headlights shone into his face on the too dark country road. Is this car in my lane?  Gripping the wheel with two large hands, his knuckles went white as he swallowed and jerked his car to the left. Gravel flying as his heart slammed into his ribs.  The vehicle speed by, oblivious to the fact that they were in the wrong lane.  Picking up the phone, he dialed 911.

See the difference? Details. Add a couple of sentences and suddenly you are there, in the car. Your heart is pounding and your mouth is dry. The detail of the headlights, his internal thought coupled with the action puts you in the scene, in his head.

This is where you want your reader.

I’ve heard writers say that they have trouble with this.  Personally, this is what I do. I sit and imagine myself watching this happen…or maybe it’s happening to me. What’s the first thing you might notice? How is your body reacting? What is your thought? What sounds do you hear? Is there a smell?

Of course, then there is the issue of character development.  The same method applies. In order to create people that are real living breathing beings in your books, you have to think this way. What kind of personality does he have? How does he react in an emergency, or when he’s angry? How does this play off of the other characters?  What flaws does he have? Writing the perfect man or woman won’t get you far. People want to read about people that make mistakes because they are real. They want to relate to your story. They want to see themselves in your characters.

However, remember one thing. Don’t take it to far.  Being overly descriptive of every little nuance gets old.  Page after page of little details just won’t due. You must trust your reader to use their imagination. Be descriptive, but vague. Let them carry themselves there in their minds, TRUST THEM!  Otherwise, they will find themselves skimming and flipping pages to get past this never-ending description of a bedroom and back to the plot.

And there you have it. Now that you know what’s missing…take a breath and open that laptop.

Rachael Tamayo is the author of the Friend-Zone series and several short stories all available on Amazon. Her Newest release, Claim me (Finale to the Friend-Zone trilogy) will be available February 14th.

New Release: Canoples Investigations Exposes Space Dodger Release Tour

banner-1

Welcome to the Canoples Investigations Exposes Space Dodger release tour. This is the third novel and fourth story in this series. Strap on your restraints and be ready for an exciting ride… oh, once you have the book in hand, you will discover there’s a special added attraction—the first chapter of Secret Society: A Canoples Investigations Novella!

http://bookgoodies.com/a/B01N0OBRS6

space-dodgers-001Blurb

There’s a carnival on the station, with all kinds of “legally” cloned animals, more than a few zero-G acrobats, and miniature clowns. BD’s ever present suspicious mind latches onto one thing when the advance team for Galactic Carnival arrives to begin preparations for a weeklong visit. The ringmaster looks familiar, but the man swears that he has never been to Canoples Station before. Even worse, children five and under are disappearing. A bit of investigating on BD’s part clues him in to the fact this has happened on every station Galactic Carnival has visited so far. He’s determined to uncover the true identity of the ringmaster and solve the mystery of the missing children, but at what cost. Is BD willing to lose his lifelong friends to solve this case? Will they prove Jenna Rock, Wade’s girlfriend, isn’t involved?

About K.C. Sprayberry

Born and raised in Southern California’s Los Angeles basin, K.C. Sprayberry spent years traveling the United States and Europe while in the Air Force before settling in northwest Georgia. A new empty nester with her husband of more than twenty years, she spends her days figuring out new ways to torment her characters and coming up with innovative tales from the South and beyond.

She’s a multi-genre author who comes up with ideas from the strangest sources. Those who know her best will tell you that nothing is safe or sacred when she is observing real life. In fact, she considers any situation she witnesses as fair game when plotting a new story.

wade-quoteExcerpt

It feels so good to have Mildred close. I can’t think of her as Jenna, even when she has on her trademark wig and is wearing stage makeup like she is now. Granted, she’s the premier space grunge/rap artist in the whole galaxy. Everywhere she goes, people want to touch and possess her, but here on Canoples Station, I do my best to give her the room she needs to wind down.

That is, until I got a message late last night from her. I still can’t believe what she’s done. That my girl, who has absolutely no investigative training, has stumbled onto and taken control of a situation that is potentially explosive and might endanger her life without consulting Security on any of the stations where she’s performed until now just boggles my mind.

“You know.” She giggles. “I dream about moments like this.”

Her comment startles me. Here we are, stuck near the space dock with so many people around that it’s hard to keep an eye on everyone, and she says that. Sometimes, I think Mildred is a lot like BD.

“What do you mean?” I take my gaze off the crowd to look at her.

Interview with the Author

What do you do to relax and recharge your batteries?

I read. Of course, I read. I’m an author and reading is vital to what we do, but I also have certain books that draw me back. Action/adventure, science fiction, and fantasy top the list. Also, real life crime books are very intriguing. I’ll also cook—as in I take over the kitchen and without a recipe of really anything more than some ingredients, create new dishes. The most recent one was a pasta salad that was nothing more than tossing the pasta with leftover ham, whatever veggies were in the fridge, and then adding a great natural balsamic/olive oil vinaigrette. Everyone loved that. Or my tacos in pasta shells, which was created one night when I forgot to pick up taco shells. That’s an often requested family favorite. My biggest relax and recharge my batteries is to grab my camera and go out into the country, just taking pictures of whatever I find interesting.

What truly motivates you in general? In your writing?

The story motivates me. I have to hear the characters and be able to visualize the scenes in order to write my books. Often times, I am writing with my eyes closed, thinking about the whole scene as it’s unwinding in my head, and getting down the small details that make the book important.

Where do your ideas come from?

For the Canoples Investigations series, the story began on the afternoon of September 11, 2001. Writing that day had become impossible, just like many people found they couldn’t function after the devastating news struck. My youngest was about two months away from his sixth birthday and once we got home from kindergarten, he asked me why bad people want to hurt so many other people all at one time. This child needed to understand why his nice safe world didn’t feel that any longer. All I could tell him is that was a time when we looked for heroes, for people who stand up against injustice and put the world right again. He sadly said that it was too bad there weren’t any kids around who could do that. That moment was when the characters of BD, Carl, Cassie, and Terry began to fight their way to the surface. It would take another ten years before I could write their tales, but once I started, they have never let me release them for long.

wade-quoteInterview with Wade Bradford

What is your most marked characteristic?

I am devoted to my job, my duty. Nothing stands in the way of ensuring the residents of Canoples Station safe from whatever threatens us. But I don’t rush madly into a situation. I go by the rules, always. That goes back to when my dad, Tom Bradford, disappeared. He is the former Chief of Security. Everyone thought he’d been attacked and killed, but I knew better. Only I couldn’t tell anyone what was only suspected at the time, not even my younger brother. To make matters worse between us, I was thrust into the position of his father, a job he didn’t want me to have and one I took on reluctantly. That has caused more than a few problems between us.

When and where were you the happiest?

I’m happiest when Mildred is around. She’s the love of my life. Most people know of her as Jenna Rock, the space grunge/rap singer, but they don’t realize that’s only a persona she adopts to hide her true feelings. Mildred is a wonderful, loving, caring woman, even though her parents abandoned her on Mistlich when she was little more than a toddler. That she survived and became a galaxy wide success is a miracle.

What is it that you most dislike?

People who break the rules. We have rules for a reason. They are there for the citizens of the space stations to have an orderly, normal life. Lawbreakers, those who think the rules are for others and not themselves, always upset the balance. This is why I take my job as a Security officer so seriously. Our lives would be madness unless people like me are there to ensure order.

AUTHOR BIO:

It was a strange and twisting road that led to the publishing of my second novel.

Born and raised in Bristol, England. I spent my adult life in business, the majority of that time marketing cars. I eventually owned the largest Saab specialist in the world, before a divorce put an end to that part of my life.

This led me to leave Bristol to live halfway up a mountain in the Welsh valleys, start a part time six year English Literature course at Bristol University, and attend creative writing classes in Cardiff.

My interest in English literature flourished and I have won several prizes for my short stories. My first book, ‘Twenty Short Stories – Settling a score,” reached No 6 in the Short Stories Best Sellers and is still available. My second novel, a romantic thriller entitled Hand Over Fist was released earlier this year

Chasing What’s Already Gone evolved from a short story Carpe Diem in my second anthology Twenty One Short Stories. I could not get the two main characters out of my head and I had to find out what happened to them after the end of the short story.

I now live very happily halfway up that mountain in the Welsh Valleys with my wonderful partner, Mari, and our rescue dog, Wolfie.

Blog Tour: S.H.A.Y by Christina Leigh Pritchard

cin rockTitle: S.H.A.Y. (The Almost Series #1)

Author: Christina Leigh Pritchard

Genre: Science Fiction

Publication Date: August 16th, 2016

Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000026_00033]“Experiment 318: Gone Rogue”

Shay is scientific experiment #318. Science may have created her, but she refuses to allow it to blind her to the difference between right and wrong…
Synthetic Hominid Assumed Youth (S.H.A.Y.) is eighteen years old, which means she has completed Phase One: Developmental. Shay no longer requires the assistance of her Optional Human Parent, Darla, who has guided her in the process of discovering her morality. Shay loves her easy, charming life aboard the marine research facility and doesn’t want it to change.

Phase Two: Experimental. All S.H.A.Y. ages 18-20 will experience loss…

Darla shouldn’t have to die because of an experiment. The thought of losing the only parent she’s ever known is too much. Determined to make sure the scientists at the facility don’t get their way, Shay entraps Darla in a transport device to escape across the Miami Border. There, on the mainland, law enforcement will keep her human parent safe.

Escape Mission: Failed…

Shay crashes into one of the Lone Keys off the coast of Florida, abandoned to all humanity, except for the stranger who drags her ashore. Shay must get Darla to safety or she will die of radiation poisoning trapped inside the Freeze Portal, but Shay can’t do it alone.

The boy who found her, an Ersatz Reproduction Intelligence Clone (E.R.I.C.), is her only hope. He has adaptation skills she needs to complete her mission. Eric was created by the same scientists who want to kill Darla, though. She tries to keep their interaction strictly business, but it’s hard to hate him. He’s flirty, charming and not to mention devastatingly handsome.

Shay must put her trust in Eric’s hands if she wants to save Darla from her fate. It may be worth her heart, but will it be worth her life?

Teaser 2S.H.A.Y. argues with the E.R.I.C.

“Well then, I’m not going to get in the water.” I bent over, grabbing my clothes. He helped me, handing me my shirt.

I snatched it from him. “I’ll just wait up here for you to get back.”

He laughed, poking me in the stomach. “Look, creampuff, I’m not going in without you.”

“Oh yes you will, or I’ll—”

“You’ll what? Talk to yourself some more?”

I narrowed my eyes at him, stumbling as I tugged my pants on.

“You’re the one who needs my help, remember?”

“You make me sick.” My shirt slipped down over my head and I struggled with the buttons.

He smiled. “Take your clothes off.”

“Don’t tell me what to do.”

Amie groaned. She stood beside me, rolling her eyes. “You’re just creating more and more sexual tension with the E.R.I.C. Soon, you’ll forget all about your Darla and I’ll have no human mother for S.H.A.Y. 319.”

“I won’t!” I unzipped my pants again. “I’ll do whatever it takes to save them both.”

Eric backed away. “Whoa, there, I was just teasing you.”

“I’m not talking to you.”

He rolled his eyes. “Right, I forgot, you have others here with you.”

“I’m not doing this for you, you’re the enemy. I’m trying to save my, my—”

“You’re trying to save your ‘what’ exactly?”

“It doesn’t concern you. Just follow me into the water. That way, we can get started.”

“Are you hitting on me?” His eyes widened. “I enjoy a little banter and all, but—”

I shoved him. “Like I’d ever flirt with you.”

Five star review! As an avid follower of The Braille series, I couldn’t wait to read the next instalment from J A Kerr. Book 3 doesn’t disappoint! With increasingly complex storylines and clever introductions to fresh characters, you are taken on a roller coaster of a ride; experiencing contradictory emotions as the book gathers pace. Definitely darker than the first two books, Kerr manages to balance romance with danger, and offers the reader fascinating insight into “edgier” elements of sexual desire. Braille club die hards will enjoy the twists and turns of familiar relationships however “Undone” takes them to another level, setting up a tantalising finale that will keep you guessing! Great read, highly recommend! – Marie Lynch.

Author Pic.Author Bio

I was born in the spring of 1967 at Paisley’s Ross Hospital in Scotland and grew up in Glasgow. I was an office administrator and latterly a recruitment consultant before marrying and relocating to The Netherlands with her husband. After two years, I moved to Cheshire where my first child was born and returned to work part-time. My final relocation took me back to my home town of Glasgow where I welcomed the arrival of my second child. I raised my family whilst harbouring dreams of becoming a writer. In September 2013, I took the plunge and started my first book.

When I set out to write these books, I wanted to create something that mirrored exactly the kind of books I like to read. My top picks are always originals featuring strong male and female protagonists with attitude. The Braille Club Series books are a great mix of genres. Although sensuality plays a big part, there is also intrigue and a touch of thriller.

I love to connect.
