Shot to death in his home, Morgan Tutwiler leaves behind a multimillion-dollar business and a daughter who hasn’t spoken to him in years. And she isn’t alone in wanting him dead. Plenty of people wanted the most hated man in Denver dead in P. H. Turner’s latest novel in the Claire Callahan series.

Reminiscent of the finest gumshoe storytelling, Secrets and Lies, would not be complete without Turner’s signature quirky characters and inventive plot.

Excerpt from Chapter 2 of Secrets and Lies:

Claire Callahan typed the last words of the last paragraph in her final report, tears threatening. This child custody case was worse than typical – to her, they were all bad—and tore Claire’s heart out. She clicked Send without even bothering to proofread it like she usually did. All she wanted was to go home and watch Netflix and eat leftover pizza.

She shut down her computer and sprinted to the elevator to the garage.

As a young and eager private investigator for the prestigious law firm of Marsh and Whitley, sometimes the job broke her heart, sometimes it put her in danger, sometimes it frustrated her . . . but it never bored her. That would be a deal breaker.

Claire unlocked Bug, mentally crossed her fingers hoping he would start and pulled out of the parking garage. Bug couldn’t do better than to putter-put in the slow lane of the Interstate, but the poor thing was over twenty years old. In car-years, that was like a hundred. He had a new set of tires and a shiny new black paint job, but he needed a new motor, and his asthmatic heater was going to have to be replaced before the Denver winter set in.

She did her best to ignore the rusted-out holes in the passenger side floorboards—holes big enough to see the asphalt whiz by on a sunny day. The little guy needed more restoration than she had money.

Rafe accused her of being nuts for pouring money into the “heap,” but Bug was nearly a classic. And besides, a car payment wasn’t in the budget.

Detective Rafe Brewster shared the same goal she had: To see that justice was done.

They had nearly ruined a perfectly good working relationship by having a dinner date.

Fortunately, by the time the bill arrived, they came to their senses, went Dutch, and agreed the evening had been too awkward to ever bring up again.
