Meet the Characters from The Case of the Cat Crazy Lady
By Debbie De Louise

Instead of a blurb, excerpt, or a plot synopsis, character profiles are a great way to introduce readers to a book. Here are some of the characters from The Case of the Cat Crazy Lady: Buttercup Bend Mystery #1. I hope you enjoy meeting them.

Sharing Good and Bad News Including a New Release

As some of you might know, I lost my handsome 14-year old cat, Stripey, to cancer on Friday, May 13. He’d been sick for some time, losing weight rapidly and becoming very weak. We tried a prednisone shot which only helped briefly but got him through Mother’s Day, my birthday, and my husband’s birthday. We made the decision to send him to Rainbow Bridge because his quality of life was deteriorating. He could hardly walk, eat, or do any of the things he once enjoyed. It was so sad to see him that way. He is now with his friend, Oliver, the Siamese I lost four years ago. Even though I still have two cats, there’s someone missing in my house. The three “mouseketeers” are down to two. It hurts, but I know it was our only choice.

They say when it rains, it pours. After putting Stripey to sleep, my daughter and I tested positive for COVID. We had ignored some earlier symptoms thinking they were allergy-related and having other things on our minds. But once we starting running fevers, we took tests to check. They were positive. My husband tested positive the next day, so the whole family had caught it. We are on the mend but still have symptoms and are quarantining.

But when it pours, a rainbow sometimes appears afterwards. I’m happy to announce that the first book of my new cozy series, The Case of the Cat Crazy Lady, has been published by Next Chapter. This book will be available in several formats including paperback, hardcover, large print, eBook, eventually audio, and it may also be translated. It will be distributed on several platforms including Barnes and Noble, Amazon, Kobo, Scribd, Overdrive, and many others. For now, I have the universal link to the Amazon purchase page. When I receive the universal link to all the places that sell it, I will update this post. If you have a favorite online booksite, just check and see if it’s available there yet.

Without sharing any spoilers, I’d like to introduce a few of the characters in the book.

Hi, I’m Cathy Carter, and the main character of The Case of the Cat Crazy Lady. I live in Buttercup Bend which is a lovely small town in the Catskills. I live with my grandmother, Florence and Siamese cat, Oliver. I co-own a pet cemetery and rescue center with my brother, Doug, who lives next door with his pregnant wife, Becky. Doug and I are orphans. We lost our parents five years ago in a car accident. I was injured in the accident and have a scar on my cheek. It wasn’t the only scar I received. I became very shy and withdrawn and found it easier to be around animals. Opening the pet business helped me, as did my friend, Nancy and my work as a photographer for the Buttercup Bugle, the town newspaper. You’ll learn more about me in the book. I hope you enjoy it.

Here are a few of the other characters you’ll meet in The Case of the Cat Crazy Lady:

Florence Wilson, my grandmother, a self-reliant widow who meets a strange yet charismatic man named Howard Hunt at a church square dance. She enjoys needlework and gardening.

Douglas Carter, my brother, who works at the Buttercup Bend Post Office and is married to Becky and has two dogs, Max and Millie.

Maggie Broom, the murder victim, who was known in the town as “The Cat Crazy Lady.” She enjoyed playing BINGO but kept to herself and the dozens of indoor and outdoor cats that she cared for. Relatively new in town, she arrived two years ago and had not made many friends before she was found murdered.

Nancy Meyers, my best friend, who convinces me to join her in investigating Maggie Broom’s murder. Nancy is outgoing and likes to flirt. She has her eye on the town’s vet and the deputy sheriff, while I’m interested in my gardener.

Brody Broom, Maggie’s brother, who is the prime suspect in the murder. After the will is read, he and his sister aren’t happy with what they are left. Brody has been in trouble with the law since he was 15, Sheriff Miller believes he is guilty of his sister’s murder, but I learn some things about him that make me believe in his innocence.

Keep an eye out for more updates on the book and its upcoming blog tour with Great Escapes Virtual Book Tours in June.

February Author News

I hope you’re all staying safe and warm this winter. February can be a mixed weather month in some areas, bringing snowstorms one day and sun and warmer temps the next. It’s also the month of Valentine’s Day which also brings mixed feelings. Some people love this romantic holiday, and others don’t care much for it. It also happens to be the shortest month of the year.

For me, February is a busy month. Two of my books were recently accepted by Next Chapter Publishing, a reprint of my Pet Posts: the Cat Chats and the first book of my new Rainbow Gardens Pet cozy mystery series, The Case of the Cat Crazy Lady. Both these books will be published in hardcover, paperback, large print, eBook, and eventually will be produced on audio.

I also have two books on sale in February. My romantic comedy novella, When Jack Trumps Ace, will be free from February 11 to February 15.

Jackie Riordan’s in trouble . . .

When her jewel-thief father is caught in the middle of a heist, Jackie makes her getaway to his ex-jail pal’s apartment. a man called Ace, who lives in an upscale neighborhood of Chicago. What she doesn’t count on is falling in love with him and becoming his partner in crime. She also doesn’t expect to compete with Ace’s old flame or deal with his cat Roxie who causes her allergy attacks.

All bets are off . . .

After Jackie discovers clues left by her father which lead her to a treasure that Ace may have stolen, she contemplates her next move. Should she trust Ace and believe her father gave him the money, or head home to her mother, a religious hypocrite who would have no qualms about ratting out her own daughter to the cops?

Things that sparkle aren’t always Diamonds . . .

Before Jackie can decide who the good guys really are, she finds herself atop the Willis Tower carrying her father’s ashes in her pocket and aiding Ace in the largest jewelry heist of his life. Things go terribly wrong, and Jackie’s only choice seems to be to walk away from Ace or face imprisonment.

My Cobble Cove mystery, Love on the Rocks, is on sale for 99 cents Feb. 11 to Feb. 15.

It’s February in the small town of Cobble Cove. Love is in the air . . . but so is murder!

When Alicia helps plan a Valentine’s Day Party at the Cobble Cove library that also includes a surprise for her newlywed friend, Gilly, things go wrong when a mysterious box of chocolates addressed to the director turns out laced with poison.

Clues Lead to A Dead Suspect

Although Alicia promised John she’ll no longer meddle in crime investigations, she and Gilly set out to find the person threatening Sheila who murdered the courier of the deadly candy. The three people they suspect include the professor from California who’s been romancing Sheila while she assists him with research for his book; the obnoxious patron Rhonda Kleisman who threw coffee at the director after refusing to pay for a damaged book; and a visiting widow staying at Gilly’s inn who’s unnaturally curious about Sheila and earns the nickname of Madame Defarge for her interest in knitting.

New Cat in Town

While Alicia and Gilly are trying to solve this new Cobble Cove mystery, Sneaky is introduced to Gilly’s new kitten, Kittykai, a calico she brought home from her honeymoon in Hawaii. It’s not like at first sight, but the two cats eventually become friends. They also both play a part in foiling the killer’s murder attempts, but will Alicia and Sheila survive unscathed?
