Cat Latimer and her writer’s retreat group go on a hiking trip—but a murderer has been lurking off the beaten path . . .

Cat’s sweetheart, Seth, is going all out on an outing into the local mountains—for the benefit of the writing group Cat’s hosting at her Colorado B&B. But when they try to identify some plant and animal life, they find death instead. The body belongs to a man with a gold claim a few miles away. Instead of striking it rich, he’s been struck down.

To his surprise, Seth recognizes the victim from his military days—and up to now believed he’d already died during his last tour of duty. Now Cat has to solve this mystery before the killer takes a hike . . .”

EXCERPT FROM A FIELD GUIDE TO HOMICIDE

“Stay close and don’t drag behind.” Seth waved Archer and Jocelyn to the front. “You two after me, Cat, you can be in the middle, and, Tristin, can you and Sydney bring up the end?”

“Works for me.” Tristin circled his arms around Sydney and kissed her neck. “But we might lag behind a little.”

“Perv.” Sydney stepped out of his embrace, but her smile didn’t waver. “Don’t worry about us, we’ll keep up.”

“Great. Then we’re off.” Seth started up the trail, and Cat waited for the first couple to follow.

The first hour went fast with a few stops to take pictures, as well as compare plants with the pictures in the book. By the time they’d reached the first outlook, where Seth was already stopped and waiting for them, Cat’s legs ached. She leaned on a tree and stretched out her calves. “Too many

hours sitting at the desk.”

Jocelyn plopped on the bench that the Forest Service had set up near the lookout. She took out her water bottle and took a long sip before talking. “I haven’t done anything like this since college. I used to be on the cross-country team and ran for miles. I guess I should pick back up that hobby.”

“I can’t believe they have a full setup here.” Archer glanced at the outhouse. “Tell me that’s

functional.”

“The Forest Service maintains this trail year-round because it’s also a cross-country ski trail. For most of the hiking trails the maintenance is shut down November first or at the first snowfall,” Seth explained as Archer made his way to the small building.

“Great.”

Watching the now-trotting Archer, Tristin laughed. “I guess when you got to go . . .”

Sydney slapped his arm. “Don’t be mean. Give Cat your camera and come over here so we can get a picture of us by the overlook.”

Tristin took his camera off from the lanyard that kept it around his neck. “Do you mind? We

have at least one couple picture from every hike we take. And Sydney’s right, this is a perfect spot.”

“Not a problem.” Cat glanced at the expensive camera and pointed to a button. “This one?”

“Yep, just point and shoot. The camera will focus in on our faces so it will set the correct angle and background for you.” He grinned as he made his way to stand by his wife. “It was pricy, but our photo quality for the blog has gone up at least by ten times.”

“He’s always about the picture.” Sydney put an arm around him and a hand on his chest.

Love, Cat thought. It was apparent that these two adventurers loved each other. She took several pictures, then looked at the camera to make sure she got a good photo. Frowning, she looked closer and when Tristin came back for the camera, she shoved it in his hand and rushed over to the overlook.

“What’s wrong. Did the pictures come out bad?”

Tristin stopped and thumbed through the shots.

“These are great.”

When Cat reached the edge of the lookout, she saw what she’d seen through the lens. A man’s leg stuck out from a huckleberry bush across the valley to the closest mountain. Seth joined her.

“What’s going on? What did you see?” He lowered his voice.

All Cat could do was point toward the bush. She knew when he’d seen the same thing when he took a quick intake of air.

“See if you have cell service and call your uncle. I think our hike is over for the day.” Seth turned and looked at the three guests who were gathered around the bench watching them. Archer came out of the outhouse and frowned.

“Are you all waiting for me?”

Guest Post and Blog Tour for Sconed to Death, A Cat Latimer Mystery, by Lynn Cahoon

Hi Ruff Draft’ers.  I’m Lynn Cahoon, author of the Cat Latimer cozy mystery series.  Cat, my main character, is a YA author who runs a monthly writers retreat out of the Victorian she got when her ex-husband died.

The series is set in Colorado, south of Denver, (so the airport is close) in a little college town that caters to the children of the mob families.  So the college is special but most people don’t know the specific admission requirements. Cat (and her ex-husband) used to teach at the college, but when she divorced the cheater, she moved to California.

She’s now dating her high school sweetheart who is the official retreat handyman and driver.

When Cat moved back home, her BFF came with her and Shauna is the house mom for the retreat. She’s also writing a cookbook. The first one has all of the Warm Springs Writers Retreat breakfast menu items. And a few of her own that she’d picked up along the way.

And that’s where the trouble begins for Sconed to Death.

The fun part of writing this book was the visiting writers. They were all from the same cozy writer critique group in Chicago. And each brings their own personality and problems to the retreat.  I really love the structure of setting the book around the retreat week. I always know what’s happening in the background while Cat’s off sleuthing without her uncle’s permission. (Uncle Pete is the town police chief.)

I always enjoy talking about the writing process and Cat, (surprising, I know) has a few of my own writing quirks. She’s a linear writer. She lets the characters tell the stories. And she likes a bit of magic in her books. Her main character, Tori, gets moved to a boarding school the summer before high school starts. She’s angry at her folks, but, since her magic blossomed that summer, she needs the training in how to deal with this witch thing she has.

I’m not writing Tori’s story (yet) but I did just sell a reluctant witch series to my publisher. Mountain Springs Magic (working title) will be on my writing plate late this year and I’m so excited to get my grimoire going for the story details. It’s going to be a fun series.

So what kind of cozy stories do you like? An inside look at the author life? Small town?  Paranormal?

Cat Latimer pursues a scone-cold killer who iced a top chef in a local bakery . . .

Cat has a full plate at her Aspen Hills Warm Springs Resort, as a group of aspiring cozy mystery authors arrives for a writers retreat. So when baker Dee Dee Meyer stirs up trouble by filing a false complaint with the health inspector against the B&B—all because she insists Cat’s best friend Shauna stole her recipes—Cat marches into the shop to confront her.

But Dee Dee’s about to have her own batch of trouble. Greyson Finn—a celebrity chef and, until today, one of Denver’s most eligible bachelors—has been found dead in her bakery. Cat’s uncle Pete, who happens to be the chief of police, warns her not to engage in any half-baked sleuthing. But as her curiosity rises, Cat’s determined to discover who served the chef his just desserts—before the killer takes a powder . . .
