Interview of Author Deena Alexander and Blog Tour for Hunted for the Holidays

It’s my pleasure to interview author Deena Alexander from Clermont, Florida.

Welcome to Ruff Drafts, Deena. Please tell us about your books.

Hunted for the Holidays is my fifth book with Harlequin Love Inspired Suspense. It’s the first book in my Jameson Investigations series, which will also include Hiding the Witness and Exposing Lethal Secrets, both of which are already available for preorder. It will also include a fourth book, which I’m working on now, which hasn’t been titled yet.

Very nice. Please tell us a little bit about your books — if you write a series, any upcoming releases or your current work-in-progress.

I love flawed characters, whose internal conflicts are as unique and challenging as the danger they find themselves in. This is a prevailing theme throughout most of my stories. Don’t we all have our own flaws to examine, our own challenges to overcome? But to face those challenges while fleeing from or fighting unimaginable danger takes a special kind of strength, courage and faith. In each of my stories, my characters face their own internal battles while running for their lives. So far, I’ve written Crime Scene Connection, Shielding the Tiny Target, Kidnapped in the Woods, Christmas in the Crosshairs, and Hunted for the Holidays, all of which are now available. Hiding the Witness is due to release on 2/25/2025, Exposing Lethal Secrets on July 1, 2025, and the fourth Jameson Investigations book in October of 2025. I am currently working on a proposal for a new romantic suspense series with Harlequin.

Your books sound quite interesting. Describe your goals as a writer. What do you hope to achieve in the next few years? What are you planning to do to reach these goals?

My biggest goal as a writer is to touch as many people’s lives as possible. I’ve always read a lot, and escaping into a fantasy world through books has gotten me through some of my most difficult challenges in life. I would love to offer that same faith, hope, and escape to someone else. I am working on a new proposal for Harlequin right now, and my goal over the next few years is to continue writing for Love Inspired Suspense. Oh, and I’d also LOVE for one of my books to be made into a TV show or movie. 😊

Great goals. What type of reader are you hoping to attract?  Who do you believe would be most interested in reading your books?

Love Inspired Suspense is a Christian fiction line, so I would say people who enjoy clean stories with a lot of action and suspense along with their romance would enjoy my stories most.

They sound similar to my two cozy mystery series. What advice would you give other authors or those still trying to get published?

No matter how difficult things get, always pursue your dreams. Also, don’t ever stop learning. You must be able to not only accept criticism, but to embrace it and learn from it. Every rejection on your journey is also a learning opportunity.

Excellent advice. I agree totally. What particular challenges and struggles did you face before first becoming published?

I probably faced more challenges than a lot of authors, because when my writing journey began, I knew absolutely nothing about the writing process. I didn’t own a computer, didn’t know what Microsoft Word was, didn’t know how to send an email…never mind using track changes for editing. But I wanted to write, so I set up a loose-leaf binder and began my first novel by hand. Once my husband realized I was serious about writing a novel, he set me up an office and got me a computer. My best friend taught me how to work Microsoft Word, and I took off from there, researching everything I could get my hands on about the writing process.

Very inspiring.Do you belong to any writing groups? Which ones?

I am a member of Sisters in Crime and FHLCW (Faith, Hope & Love Christian Writers).

I’m also a member of Sisters in Crime. What are your hobbies and interests besides writing?

In my spare time, which is rare, I enjoy spending time with my family, walking (while taking pictures of scenery and wildlife), and reading.

I love walking and photography. Since I’ve moved to a more rural area, I’ve been photographing a lot of deer.

What do you like most and least about being an author? What is your toughest challenge?

The thing I love most about being an author is being able to share my stories with readers. My toughest challenge is finding time, not only to write, but to do everything else that’s involved—editing, marketing, etc… I also homeschool my fourteen-year-old son, so that is very time consuming.

Time is always an issue for us authors.

What do you like about writing ?

While my stories are romantic suspense, they do share a lot of similarities with cozy mysteries. They tend to be clean romances with themes of friendship and trust. They often take place in small rural towns and have the hero and heroine working together to solve a mystery.

That’s what I mentioned earlier. In fact, I thought that the first book of my Cobble Cove cozy mystery series, A Stone’s Throw, was a romantic suspense novel until readers began reviewing it as a cozy mystery.

Can you share a short excerpt from your latest title or upcoming release?

Shae walked beside her into the house and paused to listen in the doorway. Silence. “Go, now.”

She lifted the phone on her way through the kitchen and followed Gracie to her room. Everything seemed to be in order. Even though she knew she wasn’t handling the situation well, she couldn’t seem to get her emotions under control. For years she’d kept to herself and worked from home, but then Gracie had started school and wanted to play sports, make friends, sing in the church choir. Shae should have known better. And now her daughter was in danger because Shae hadn’t kept a low enough profile.

She dialed the number, listened to it ring…and ring. That wasn’t right. Someone was supposed to be available at all times in case of an emergency, in case she was discovered. She disconnected and tried again. Nothing. Her breath came in shallow gasps. It would be okay. She’d contemplated not calling anyway, so maybe it was for the best no one answered. Maybe God was leading her elsewhere.

Her heart shattered when Gracie picked up the stuffed bunny she’d stopped sleeping with a year ago and hugged it close as she started filling her bag with her most prized possessions.

Shae left her to it and went to her own room. She grabbed the two flight bags, dug through one for the loaded handgun, then stuck the weapon into the waistband of her shorts and shrugged a sweatshirt over it before dropping the bags beside the door to the garage. All of her important documents were already stashed in waterproof cases inside, as well as a good amount of cash she’d saved over the years. “Gracie, let’s go.”

Gracie emerged from the hallway, her bag and Mr. Cuddles clutched against her chest.

“Oh, baby, I—”

A car door slammed right outside the house, cutting her off.

“Get down. Hide. Now!”

Gracie scrambled beneath the Christmas tree in the corner, trampling packages, then peered between the branches.

Shae grabbed a pen and paper from her desk, scribbled the phone number down, and shoved the paper into Gracie’s hand. With no time for more than a quick reassurance, Shae backed toward the door. “If anything happens to me, you run to Katie’s house. Do you understand me?”

The doorbell rang.

Gracie’s gaze shot to the door and she nodded, teeth chattering, eyes wide.

“When you get there…” Three houses down with two possible killers on her heels. And now she was bringing this mess onto someone else, someone who had only ever been kind to them, who’d become a friend. “You hide until Miss Reva gets home, then tell her to call that number and tell whoever answers what happened. She should tell them who you are and that you need help. Okay?”

“Uh…huh…”

An insistent pounding rattled the front door. “Avery!”

Shae’s blood ran to ice as she stared deeply into her daughter’s brilliant blue eyes then yanked the handgun from her waistband. No one should know that name. She’d shed it six years ago when she’d become Shae Evans. “Get down!”

Despite her shocked expression when she caught sight of the weapon, Gracie crouched lower.

Hand shaking wildly, Shae aimed the gun at the door just as it splintered beneath a forceful kick.

Thank you. That was great. Is there anything else you’d like our readers to know about you or your books?

If you decide to give Hunted for the Holidays a try, I hope you enjoy it!

I’m sure I and my readers will.

Thank you so much for having me!

My pleasure. Best wishes with your new release and future books. I’m sharing your social media sites and blog tour below.

Featuring twin hooks that cozy readers can’t get enough of—classic books and delicious food—this new series from the Agatha Award-winning, nationally bestselling author of several much loved series, including the Fairy Garden Mysteries and the French Bistro Mysteries, is a delicious treat for mystery lovers, especially fans of Ellery Adams, Krista Davis, and Lauren Elliott.

It’s a truth universally acknowledged that a genuinely top-notch party must be in want of a theme. Allie Catt, caterer and personal chef in the beautiful mountain community of Asheville, North Carolina, has devised a winning formula by using her clients’ favorite books as inspiration. Her first themed event is based on Pride and Prejudice (Allie’s cat, Darcy, approves), and it’s so popular that soon she has grand ideas for future parties based on Rebecca, The Great Gatsby, Babette’s Feast and more.

Business is booming, and a rival catering company is fuming. But there’s a sting in the tale when the aunt of one of Allie’s clients and best friends, Tegan, is murdered. Tegan is the victim’s sole heir, and quickly becomes the main suspect. Allie has no doubts about her friend’s innocence, but how to prove it?

Once again, her love of literature comes to the rescue, and with some guidance from her favorite fictional detectives, including Hercule Poirot and Sherlock Holmes, Allie sifts through the clues.

With a little luck—and the kind of pluck that would make Elizabeth Bennett proud—she may be able to stop a killer from serving up a second course of murder . . .

When life gives you lemons, make lemonade. Or maybe a gin and tonic.

Emily Hildebrandt has run into a bit of a rough patch. She’s lost her job, her fiance and her apartment. Still, she never expected to be desperate enough to accept an invitation to live with her eccentric Aunt Tilde in Redemption, Wisconsin.

But, beggars can’t be choosers. Even if part of the deal is she has to pretend to work at her aunt’s latest hair-brained scheme, The Redemption Detective Agency.

Seriously, the woman is a retired nurse. Why does she think she’s remotely qualified to run a detective agency, especially in a creepy little town like Redemption?

But, when a strange phone call suddenly thrusts them into an actual case, Emily finds herself hoping her aunt really does know what she’s doing … or an innocent person may be the one to suffer the consequences.

A spin-off from the Charlie Kingsley Mystery series! The Redemption Detective Agency is a funny, twisty cozy mystery series set in the 1990s featuring silver sleuths solving cold cases. Great for fans of the Thursday Murder Club.

About Michele Pariza Wacek

A USA Today Bestselling, award-winning author, Michele taught herself to read at 3 years old because she wanted to write stories so badly. It took some time (and some detours) but now she does spend much of her time writing stories. Mystery stories, to be exact. They’re clean and twisty, and range from psychological thrillers to cozies, with a dash of romance and supernatural thrown into the mix. If that wasn’t enough, she posts lots of fun things on her blog, including short stories, puzzles, recipes, and more, at MPWNovels.com.

Michele grew up in Wisconsin, (hence why all her books take place there), and still visits regularly, but she herself escaped the cold and now lives in the mountains of Prescott, Arizona with her husband and southern squirrel hunter Cassie.

When she’s not writing, she’s usually reading, hanging out with her dog, or watching the Food Network and imagining she’s an awesome cook. (Spoiler alert, she’s not. Luckily for the whole family, Mr. PW is in charge of the cooking.)

Although it was only a few minutes past 6:30pm, it was dark, not unexpected in Santa Cruz in early January. The Uber driver popped his hatchback and offered to help them with luggage. Tim declined, moving the four suitcases―one for him and three for Pat―on to the sidewalk.

Pat started to pick one up. “Leave it,” Tim instructed. “We can come back outside for those in a minute, but before we bring in suitcases, I want to carry my bride across the threshold.”

Pat giggled. “I’m a modern woman. No carrying needed.”

“That may be, but I’m feeling old-fashioned at the moment.” He smiled at her, put one arm around her back just above her waist, and attempted to scoop her into his arms.

She slipped away from him, laughing as she did. “I bet you can’t catch me before I get inside on my own, my old-fashioned caveman,” she flirted, heading for the front door.

“I can be a caveman if that’s how you want to be carried, but you’re being carried,” he said, his tone full of playful mischief. He gave chase and tossed her over his shoulder when he caught her.

Pat squealed, but was laughing too hard to resist, which is how she came to greet her tail-wagging Dalmatian, Dot, who jumped against Tim’s backside in an attempt to get her head up high enough for the backward slung Pat to scratch her ears; her cat, Wimsey, who abandoned his rule about avoiding Tim and rubbed against his legs, and Tina and Robin, their pet-sitting next-door neighbors, butt-first, draped over Tim’s shoulder.

GUEST POST

Why I write cozy mysteries

Besides cozies, I’ve written one other type of novel, “Mags and the AARP Gang.” That book was heavily influenced by everyone in it and in some ways that book wrote itself, though. Mags dictated much of it and the character of Melvin, who was only supposed to have a cameo role in the book kept telling me, “I’ve had an interesting life, you need to use more of it.” By the end of the book, he even felt that he had written it.

As I said, the story was a dictation by Mags who began as an annoying voice in my head interrupting me when I was almost finished with one of my cozies, “The Widow’s Walk League,” book four in my Regan McHenry Real Estate Mysteries series, and a book I loved writing. Mags kept tapping me on my shoulder in a palpable way as I sat alone in my office working, and when I finally yelled at her to stop it and leave me alone because I was almost finished with TWWL announce that I should, “write fast because I’m eighty-three, have a story to tell, and don’t know how much time I have left.”

I did as she told me, and when I was ready, sat at my computer with a blank screen, no idea what was going to happen, and asked, “Okay. Who are you?”

“My name is Margaret Broadly Benson,” she said, “but you can call me Mags.” Writing that book was such an adventure because I usually write mysteries where I at least need a timeline before I start so I know who knew what when and don’t get lost. For my cozies, by the time I start writing I’ve done a backstory or psychological profile of the characters so I know who they are and why they act the way they do. I also always have the story in mind and usually have some sort of outline of it, an idea for the cover, and certainly the title.

I’ve always loved mysteries, especially what are now called cozy mysteries where sex, violence, and harsh language my take place, but are implied and off page. That’s because my grandmother encouraged me to read her favorite author, Agatha Christie.

When I decided—at age fifty-nine—that I was bored and would see if I could write a mystery as a game, I had just finished reading everything Tony Hillerman wrote and thought I could use my real estate profession as my Navaho Nation and Santa Cruz, where I live, as my Big Reservation, but smaller like a village inhabited by Miss Marple. I knew all my characters—I had worked with them—and I had real estate stories to tell because they had either happened to me or to my talkative associates. Having a real estate agent become an amateur sleuth worked well, and while my first book, “The Death Contingency,” is not my best effort, I learned as I told the story, and by the end of it, was confident if not yet happy with everything I wrote. Most Importantly, I had written a cozy mystery and loved doing it. I wrote for me because it was fun; if others read my books and enjoyed them, that was gravy. It turns out many readers do enjoy the books.

Cozies are my love, and along the way to writing more of them I got sidetracked editing a cookbook, “128 Cozy Mystery Writers Share Their Favorite Recipes.” The cookbook with recipes featured in cozy mysteries come from all over the world as well as timeframes from the Ice Age to today because you can find cozies in all those settings. Becoming part of the cozy mystery writer community is one of the best things about writing cozies because the writers in this category are some of the most generous and kind, as well as talented writers out there.

After seven real estate mysteries, I was ready for a new series, cozy, of course. For it, I relied—okay stole—the identity of a friend who had been the Santa Cruz Law Librarian for many years. She’s also an unlicensed private investigator, a good thing since being a professional law enforcement officer or private investigator forces those protagonists into police procedurals instead of cozies where a key requirement is that the protagonist is an amateur sleuth who investigates and solves mysteries while doing something else for a living.

My friend Pat became PIP Inc. Mysteries’ Private Investigator Pat, business cards and all. She’s only been a PI for seven months, but they’ve been incredibly life changing and adventurous days. In her fifth investigation, “Donor 73101,” Pat has to unravel the mystery of who is killing the offspring of sperm donor, Aiden O’Rourke. With a little help from her best friend Syda Gonzales and sheriff sergeant Tim Lindsey she does while keeping cozy the whole way.

About Nancy Lynn Jarvis

Nancy Lynn Jarvis wore many hats before she started writing cozy mysteries. After earning a BA in behavioral science from San Jose State University, she worked in the advertising department of the San Jose Mercury News, as a librarian, as the business manager for Shakespeare/Santa Cruz, and as a realtor.

Nancy’s work history reflects her philosophy: people should try something radically different every few years, a philosophy she applies to her writing, as well. She has written seven Regan McHenry Real Estate Mysteries; five PIP Inc. Mysteries; a stand-alone novel “Mags and the AARP Gang” about a group of octogenarian bank robbers; edited “Cozy Food: 128 Cozy Mystery Writers Share Their Favorite Recipes,” and short story anthologies, “Santa Cruz Weird,” and “Santa Cruz Ghost Stories.”

When this club selects a book, magic happens!

This book club does more than read their books – they are absorbed into them to become the amateur sleuths! In order to leave the book, they must solve the mystery and reach The End.

In this journey they travel to The Golden Island Wellness Retreat for yoga, meditation, workshops, and spa treatments. They’ll bond with nature and improve their spiritual wellbeing. They’ll find their inner peace – and a dead body, of course.

Graduates from an acting college have gathered at the retreat for their ten-year reunion. Old friends reconnect, but apparently, so have old enemies. The book club must evaluate the attendees to determine whose baggage has led to murder.

GUEST POST

Yes, I Really Do Write Every Day!

The saying goes, if you find a job you love you’ll never work a day in your life. I’ve found that joy in writing my magical cozy mystery series. Every day I get to immerse myself in an enchanted world with a group of characters I’d love to have as real-life friends. I get to pick and choose my travels. I go to places I’d never been, or revisit places I’ve enjoyed in my life, or even places I’ve not actually enjoyed but had a memorable experience – both good and bad.

When I’m writing a book, the story and characters roll around in my head all day. I never know when an idea will pop up. I’ll stop anything I’m doing to jot down a few good lines, a new twist, or the solution for a plot problem.

I’ll stop in the aisle of the grocery store, sit on a bench during a walk, or open my phone and squint in the darkness in the middle of the night. When an idea hits, I want to write it down, so that it’s not lost in all the other new inspirations that hit me.

When everyone else in the family is busy doing other things, I’m known to sneak off to my office to write a few pages. When I take my mom to the doctor, I bring along my computer and find a corner of the waiting room to write. I’ve taken my work on a plane, a boat, and a train. It’s not work, for me. It’s enjoyment, pure and simple – the fun of getting my stories down on paper and knowing that my readers will have a fun time on this journey.

I just celebrated a birthday and the family wanted to know my wishes. “I’d like to finish up my book and have my family and a wonderful dinner waiting for me when I’m done!” So be it! A book finished. A wonderful family dinner to celebrate.

My family knows exactly how I am, and they support my joyful pursuit. The kids just invited me on a two-day hike, and my son said, “We’ll stay overnight in a cabin. But don’t worry, Mom. I can carry your computer in my backpack. You can still write when we’re there!”

EXCERPT

Frank strolled into the room, hopped up on the counter and stretched. His nose and whiskers twitched. “Ahhh, the life enriching aroma of fresh coffee. Which of my dear friends can I count on to prepare me a bowlful?”

“I gotcha, Frank,” said Forrest.

“While you’re at it, can you pour me a cup?” asked Sebastian, who was busy at the griddle whipping up a stack of pancakes.

“And me, please,” called Valeria over her shoulder as she took stacks of plates and bowls out of the cabinet.

The bustle of the kitchen continued until the counter was loaded with food and a second fresh pot of coffee was brewing. The peacefulness of last night had morphed into the high energy of anticipation that buzzed through the air. Today we’d pick a new book and embark on an unknown journey into a cozy mystery book. It was funny to think that in the old days a trip to the theater in the city, or a hike through the park were the only journeys I took. Now I knew I could land anywhere in the world – this world or another one – and I’d meet some kind of paranormal beings and be instrumental in solving a mystery. All with this motley group of people who’d become like family to me. Well … people, a talking cat, and a friendly ghost. My life had certainly changed.

Brunch was served and we sat around the table chatting and eating.

“I know your library has only cozy mysteries,” said Valeria. “But wouldn’t it be great to go into other kinds of books, too?”

“No,” said Zell, wrinkling up her face. “Cozies are all I ever read.”

“Wouldn’t you like to venture into a nice romance story?” Sebastian made kissing noises.

“Heaven forbid,” chortled Zell. “Any men my age would be wrinkled old prunes.”

Sebastian spit out his coffee, and several of us laughed along with him, including Zell.

“What about biographies about famous people, then?” asked Valeria.

“Boring.” Frank gave an exaggerated yawn.

“I’d enjoy a travel book,” said Moonbeam. “It would be fun to explore a new place without having the added stress of a mystery to solve.”

“If you mean tour groups and taking pictures of old cathedrals, count me out,” said Sebastian. “We get to travel to places not on any map or globe and meet paranormal beings! That’s far more interesting to me. I mean, we got to visit a sprite kingdom, Moon! How much better does it get than that?”

Moonbeam smiled. “I did love the fairies.”

By the time we dilly-dallied over our meal, caught up with everyone’s news, and had taken our time cleaning the kitchen, over two hours had passed. People were already filling small plates of food to carry downstairs to our book club meeting. We rarely had leftovers with this group.

Zell didn’t even wait for us to leave the kitchen before she pulled out her drum and slung it around her neck. She handed her plate to Sebastian and began tapping out a drumroll as she marched toward the basement door. Everyone followed her in a parade of excitement.

Forrest, Valeria, and Atticus had grabbed pairs of chopsticks and were tapping out rhythms on the end tables and coffee table. The fact that all of them were playing different rhythms didn’t seem to bother them at all.

Moonbeam began her ritual chant asking for the spirits of exploration and adventure to fill the room, and Sebastian joined her, while tapping out his own rhythm with a pair of spoons. Mollie swooped up to blow gently on the chandelier which added a pleasant tinkling to the diverse orchestra.

I made my way to the front and put my hand on the doorknob. All the tapping, chanting, and tinkling came to a halt, and an air of expectation surrounded us. I began the countdown, and everyone joined in.

“Five … four … three … two … one!”
