If you love cozy mysteries, welcome to Serenity Acres in the town of Southpoint, where everyone is a hot mess with a secret to hide.

Dinked: Secrets of Serenity Acres, dives deep into the deadly tensions between pickleball and tennis players in the bucolic, ball-buster neighborhood. When Margot Fields tries to push through a plan to expand the local courts, secrets start to come to the surface and residents start to unravel. It’s a death match to the end, but who will come out unscathed in this fun, feisty thriller?

GUEST POST

Not only is Dinked: Serenity Acres my first novel, it is my first attempt at creative writing after nearly 20 years working as a professional writer.

Serenity Acres is set in the bucolic, ball-buster town of Southpoint. Everyone in the posh gated community is a hot mess with a secret to hide. And with Courts Director Margot Fields’ plans to expand the local courts, secrets buried for years threaten to rise to the surface. Pickleball and tennis players are at each other’s throats—and someone might get theirs slit.

That’s got everyone taking wild swings—and guesses—about who’s about to string up Margot.

Dinked: Serenity Acres is Volume 1 in a planned series of five.

Serenity Acres is like an onion. So many layers, there was just no way to reveal all of the secrets in just one novel. That’s why I’ll be building on the funny and flawed residents of this enclave for the next couple of years.

My day job? I’m a Corporate Communications writer for companies listed on stock exchanges all over the world. With over 20 years of experience, I have worked with many types of companies—from nuts-and-bolts manufacturers to high-tech start-ups and everything in between—in Europe, South America, Asia, and Africa. I even walked past Buckingham Palace on the way to work to sit in the House of Commons on behalf of a cannabis company. Now that’s a Throwback Thursday!

After running my own small agency for nearly a decade, I still wanted to try my hand at the holy grail of most writers: the novel.

I grew up enjoying cozy mysteries like Murder, She Wrote and Columbo with my parents. I enjoyed the light-hearted criminality. Sure, someone got killed in each episode, but not one was seriously sinister. There were no cages in basements or boiling bodies in vats of acid. Just a single shot at mid-range or a sharp hit with a poker, and the victim had been victimized.

And the resolutions left my mom and me laughing out loud. How easily each perpetrator copped to their crime—no interrogations necessary. My husband is similarly inclined, and we gravitate towards light-hearted comedies and sitcoms and avoid anything too graphic. I was the only person who didn’t love Pulp Fiction at the time! (I know, I know… it’s a classic…)

I also grew up in the age of moms ironing to soap operas after school, and as an adult, I still love dramedic-style, serialized shows.

So when I went to create Serenity Acres—the series—I wanted to create something centered on a mystery, but with lasting characters that could move from one crisis to the next, and do it with flair! A little bit of crime, a little bit of fashion, a lot of fun!

For music lovers, there are tons of easter eggs hidden throughout the book—lyrics woven into the prose to hint at characters or even outcomes. How many can you find?

Birds are everywhere, too, in Dinked: Serenity Acres. Giving these creatures of the sky, who can surveil us any time, the power to watch, gossip, and judge the happenings in Serenity Acres adds another dimension. And what’s with all of the crows? With memories like elephants and the ability to hold a grudge longer than an election cycle, they just come back to create more trouble in Volume 2.

I hope you enjoy reading Dinked: Serenity Acres as much as I did writing it.

A Witch Awakens is about an accidental detective CeCe (Tennessee) Brown, who returns home to Tennessee after deciding the Big Apple just didn’t suit her. While working as the local ballet teacher she helps her friend Bess to put on the annual Fall Ball. Unfortunately, during a thunderstorm the night of the ball, one of the town’s most notable women is found dead. CeCe was very close to the victim, and begins to have little dizzy spells where she starts to get pictures of things around her town, and feelings compelling her to visit certain locations. Under the guidance of her grandmother and her Aunt Granny, CeCe begins to realize she shares a family proclivity for a bit of second sight. It’s a story where CeCe solves a mystery, but also begins to accept who she is, and where she’s from, and what makes her little town, and herself, special. She solves the mystery of herself.

GUEST POST

Why would a cozy mystery include everything from herbal folk medicine to dollhouse-making? Or include a failed professional dancer-turned-dance-teacher with an old mountain woman mixing herbal tea and quoting Bible verses?

When I first started forming the ideas for this book I was sure of only one thing; that I wanted to make it fun for me to write. I reasoned that I was of an age that I had forced myself long enough to do, write, act, in many ways that weren’t always of my choosing, but were required of my job or place in life at the time. This time, I wanted to bring some of my own family history and some of my interests and hobbies into the story of the book. I even wanted to bring in some things I wished I could do, like being a top-notch iced sugar-cookie baker and decorator! I mean, why not?

Two of our main characters, Nana and Aunt Granny Hazel, were inspired by my own grandmother and her sister in East Tennessee. Both grew up in a little house on the side of a mountain. One stayed in the same house she was born in until she died and she never married or had children. The other moved “to town”, went to college, married, had a child, became a teacher, and eventually became a school principal. One wore thin cotton dresses and old leather work boots, the other wore wool suits and had her hair and nails done once a week. They were as different as night and day, but they were fiercely devoted to each other and their other five siblings. Whether being the first to go to college or farming and making herbal remedies, both women were resilient, hard-working, and independent.

The dollhouse-making and dance-teaching are from my own lived experience. I’ve taught dance for over forty years, running my own studio at one time, and still teaching in an afterschool arts program. While I never tried to make it professionally as a dancer in New York, I had my share of failed auditions, and a good dance-teacher friend of mine had been a Radio City Rockette, like Nana in the book. What I knew was the experience of teaching dance to preschoolers was like herding cats with sequins on. I knew what it felt like to teach students with so much talent, but little resources of their own. I also have had a lifelong love of miniatures and in the last ten years have been building, furnishing, and decorating my own dollhouses. And it’s funny how you can find the intersection of these experiences with a murder mystery, since choreographing a dance and building a dollhouse both require putting different elements together in new and unique ways, like solving a crime!

One of the anchors in this book is something called “The Fire Circle”, which is a group of longtime women friends. I have had the gift of such circles of friends, one of which has lasted almost forty years. We call ourselves “Sistahs” and I am the youngest of the group. We have seen each other through marriage, divorce, parenthood, careers, and numerous other life events. Each of us add our own distinct flavor to the group, including age and upbringing, which allows us to both learn and teach one another, while staying rooted in the unconditional love that binds us.

In the end, I definitely was able to find the fun in the writing process that I’d sought from the start. There are numerous other connections between my life and this book, as well as a heaping scoop of my own imagination.

If you were to write a novel, what of your own life experiences or hobbies would you include? Do you have your own “Fire Circle” of friends? Please feel free to write to me at ellis@bewildernesswriting.com. I’d love to hear from you!

Northern Virginia’s own Martha Stewart returns in a brand-new mystery as an interior designer clashes with a killer . . .

Stylish brunches are all the rage this autumn in Old Town Alexandria, and everyone’s posting their parties on social media. But while Domestic Diva Sophie Winston juggles her event-filled calendar, she’s approached by local designer Mitzi Lawson—who is afraid someone is following her. The very next day Mitzi loses her best friend and business partner, Denise. The two were renovating a generations-old house where Denise died unexpectedly, and Mitzi fears that it wasn’t a medical condition to blame, but murder.

It could just be the shock talking, but Sophie agrees to help Mitzi involve the police. Then she receives a panicked phone call from Mitzi, and when she rushes to the old house, Mitzi is nowhere to be found. Now Sophie’s appetite for investigation is piqued even more than her appetite for eggs Benedict and mimosas.

Could Denise’s death be connected to her viper’s nest of in-laws or the house she was working on which her husband just inherited? What of the self-proclaimed etiquette expert with some improper secrets, or the scheming mistress? Or does the old house harbor secrets of its own? There’s a generous buffet of suspects to keep the Diva scrambling for an answer . . .

Includes delicious recipes and fabulous DIY decorating tips!

RECIPE

Hazel’s Doughnut Holes

mini-muffin pan
nonstick baking spray
13⁄4 cups flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1⁄2 teaspoon salt
3⁄4 teaspoon cinnamon
1⁄2 teaspoon nutmeg
1⁄8 teaspoon cloves
3⁄4 cup pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling) 1⁄2 cup milk
1⁄2 cup light brown sugar
1⁄3 cup canola oil
1 large egg
1 teaspoon vanilla
4-6 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
2⁄3 cup sugar
2 tablespoons cinnamon

Preheat oven to 350. Spray or grease the mini-muffin pan.

In a large bowl, mix together flour, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. Set aside. In a mixing bowl, combine pumpkin puree, milk, light brown sugar, canola oil, egg, and vanilla. Mix. Slowly add the flour mixture, a bit at a time.

Use a soup spoon or an oval tablespoon measurer to scoop out the dough. Use your finger to scoot it into the wells. Bake 12 minutes or until a cake tester comes out clean. Allow to rest on a rack a few minutes.

Pour the melted butter in a smallish shallow bowl. Mix the sugar and the cinnamon well and place in a larger, shallow bowl. Dip each doughnut hole into the butter and roll it in the cinnamon sugar. Place on the rack to cool. These freeze very well. While best when fresh, you can make them ahead of time and freeze them. Allow them to thaw to room temperature to serve.

She hates her gift – but it just might save her…

Geologist Petra Cloch can touch an object and sense the emotions of the people who’ve held it. It’s a miserable way to live. She studied rocks because they rarely ‘talk’ to her and she’s dodged friendships so she won’t need to explain her gift or feel like a voyeur. But when she takes a job as the rock and mineral curator at an unusual western history museum and picks up a jagged crystal in her new office, flashes of rage, fear and death hit hard.

Everyone says her predecessor died in a car crash, but what if he was murdered? Under normal circumstances, Petra would never become involved, but what if the previous curator died because of something he did on the job? She could be next. Petra knows she’ll need evidence, not her psychic sense she hides. Can she trust her chatty colleagues who invite her to lunch and to join a book club? And what about the far too watchful Sheriff who keeps showing up unexpectedly…
